She missed the fiftieth anniversary of her history- making act by just a few weeks: on December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to go to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested, tried and convicted. The next day, an unknown minister named Martin Luther King, Jr. helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the Civil Rights movement began in earnest.
She’s the little lady who started this big movement. She was strong and modest then and for the rest of her life. No more American a hero ever lived than Rosa Parks.
I have the deepest respect for Rosa Parks. She did “Network” long before it happened. She was “mad” and was not going to take it any more. She simply stood up for what was right without politics or verbosity.
I think it just happened. It would depend upon when the family released the statement.
Here in the WDC, it lead the news, but there wasn’t much to the story. Likely they already had the obit written except to “fill in the blanks” when she would finally pass on. And Rev. Jesse Jackson, Coretta Scott King (who’s health is not great, either), etc. are probably just finding out, too, but not in time for a statement. Most folks will probably wake up to this news. As my parents are from Birmingham, I had to fight the urge to call them right away, but I don’t wish to disturb their sleep.
Now…if this isn’t major news tomorrow then I’ll be pissed.
She was, is and shall always be my personal hero, and definitely the inspiration for every single word I’ve ever blogged.
Goodbye Ms. Parks.. and thank you for showing us that that a single person, without money, status or the “right” position in life CAN change the world!

Oh how sad. What a loss. Ms. Parks was a true hero. By that one act alone, she will be remembered in history forever.
May she rest in peace.
Farewell Rosa.
Too many emotions, too many stories from fifty years ago.
“Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?”
OH, FREEDOM
“Oh, freedom, Oh, freedom,
Oh freedom over me.
And before I’d be a slave
I’d be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free.”
I hope RubDMC doesn’t mind that I borrowed this but it is for a good cause.
RIP Rosa Parks.
I visisted a website featuring the Civil Rights Memorial after reading about Rosa Parks.
She lived to see things change, and also to see how much farther we have to go.
But I also learned that October 22nd was the 50th anniversary of the death of John Earl Reese in Mayflower, Texas.
For Rosa Parks, John Earl Reese, and so many others.
She was, is and shall always be my personal hero, and definitely the inspiration for every single word I’ve ever blogged.
