If defense budgets remain at projected levels, America’s global military preeminence will be impossible to maintain, as will the world order that is secured by that preeminence. Source (pg. 83)
And his failure this year to persuade Congress to go along with his plan to overhaul Social Security – an effort that was supposed to be the centerpiece of his second-term agenda – is a reminder to Mr. Bush of the difficulties of persuading elected officials to inflict pain on their constituents even in the service of an ideologically attractive idea.
Funny how we object to the possibility of living under a bridge and eating cat food in our golden years to serve delusional and homicidal ideology, isn’t it?
There have been signs that Mr. Bush’s sway over his party in Congress is weakening.
Rats. Ship.
Representative Thomas M. Reynolds of New York, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, dismissed the notion that the week’s events had long-range political significance. The midterm election, Mr. Reynolds said, “is 12, almost 13 months away. All of this week will be forgotten in a year. It will be forgotten in two months.”
La la la I can’t hear you . . . .
No it will not, Democrats said. They argued that Mr. Libby’s indictment would stoke voters’ doubts about the administration’s rationale for the war in Iraq. “They are watching,” said Senator Jack Reed, Democrat of Rhode Island. “They can connect the dots.”
WASHINGTON Oct.30 — Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Sunday that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should apologize for the actions of their aides in the CIA leak case.
Reid, D-Nev., also said Bush should pledge not to pardon any aides convicted as a result of the investigation into the disclosure of CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity.
