I’m going trick or treating with my daughter and grandson tonight. Denzel is going to be a puppy. But my daughter probably won’t let him have any candy as she is very ‘correct food conscious’ so I tease her that she’s making her son do the work so she can have the candy LOL!

Anyways I’ve finished xmas shopping- much less this year thank goodness, but the gift for Denzel is a kitchenette toy. My daughter says that is the toy Denzel heads for as soon as he gets to daycare. I love watching kids play make believe. I am looking forward to playing house with my grandson. I just hope he doesn’t make me do the dishes.

I’m before my bedtime is supposed to be over and not at my most coherent. If I go back to sleep for an hour could someone arrange to make the “Scalito” nomination not have happened? That would be lovely. Oh, and if you could put on a pot of hot water and some Assam Madoorie waiting when I get up that would make a nice bonus.

What was that? You say now I’m really dreaming. Oh good. Then maybe when I wake up… No, that’s not what you meant? I’m really stuck with an Antonin Scalia clone for my SCOTUS nominee and I don’t get my fantasy tea either?

That can’t be right. Someone’s just trying to scare me for Halloween or Samhain if you’d prefer, or even just October 31st no good reason, for the most deeply secular.

Sigh. I’m awake and Bush did it again. At least I’ve got hot tea, even if it isn’t the Assam.

Kennedy said about george making this nomination because he was weak, not strong. I don’t think there’s anything worse to little george than being called weak. I’m changing my theme song today.

I am off today and wold love to have seem more about the Libby thing, since I missed out on the bru ha ha last week.

Have my coffee in hand and waiting for the ambution to kick in! May take a few more cups or so to get that job done.

I must tell ya all, I get very cranky when I have to work and cant get here to chat with ya all. I took yesterday as a down day for recouping my energies and now must get the day going soon.

I am not one bit happy with this mornings news! I just hope the dems in the senate can gather some intestional fortitude to do the job this time! Bless their little hearts.

If you havent read the diary by the fat lady sings on G.R.I.T.S., please do for a great laugh. I needed that yesterday. I even emailed it to my friend in Il. She will certainly enjoy this one and agree whole-heartedly on the context.

This is the time of the year that my demised middle child always loved. She started the excitement for the holidays on Halloween. We always had a mess int he kitchen carving the pumpkin….oh, what fun we had…These are the times I remember so very well.

She would start to think of the rest of the year (holidays) and its promises to us all, at this time of the year. I miss her. The leaves are finally starting to turn down this way….

Anyhow, we must get our butts into action and do something about this nomination to the SC.

I have to go out for a while to do some shopping and then back to clean house some. I am torn apart in my house due to some remodeling being done. I will be very glad to get my home back in order. I simply can not stand this mess!!!!!!!

    Here’s a story for you… a touch of Cabin Fever.
    
    They say there’s a cabin in Potomac Woods that’s cursed. I remember hearing when four high school kids found it one weekend, when they were out hiking. They sort of walked around it, tried to look in the windows, but didn’t see anything. One of the four boys threw a rock in, knocked a screen loose from the frame. Nobody home. So they went on.
    
    But then it started to rain. And it got very dark, very fast. So the kids started back, with only two flashlights between ’em. And then they came back past this cabin, and it sure looked spooky then, in the rain and all, but it was also dry inside, and one of them was able to force the door open. So in they went.
    
    Nothing much inside. A lot of leaves that had blown in. A musty sweet smell on everything, sort of in between wood smoke and something left in an old attic for a long time. One old couch that was kinda damp. And four metal frame kitchen chairs with torn plastic upholstery, around a table in the center of the room.
    
    And that was the strange thing, you see. The table had cards on it, old playing cards, like whoever had been playing there had been interrupted, set the cards down and gone to see what it was, and never come back. Four hands, face down. Pile of plastic chips in the middle, plus a few at every place.
    
    So naturally, teen-aged boys being boys, they sat down to play…
    
    But before they could pick up the cards, they heard a voice saying, “First put your ante in the pot, then you see just what you got.”
    
    They all looked at each other. “What?” said one. “I didn’t say anything,” said another. “Well, I heard it…” “I didn’t say anything…”
    
    So they reached for the cards again, and they heard it again. “First put your ante in the pot, then you see just what you got.”
    
    They looked at each other again. Then one of them picked up one of the chips in front of him, tossed it into the middle pile, and he picked up his cards. “Come on guys.” So the others do that too, they all throw in a chip, and pick up their cards.
    
    And then the first kid, he looks at his cards, smiles a little, and he throws the next chip in. “Raise ya.”
    The other kids, they look at their cards too, and they all chip in another round. And then the first kid raises again, and they go all around the table, again and again, raising and raising, until all the chips are in the middle, and they’re all still holding those cards.
    
    And the first kid looks up from his cards a second, and he sees this old, old man across the table from him, bony and thin, with only a few teeth left in his jaw, holding his cards, and this old man is still wearing his buddy’s clothes, and even the hair kinda looks like his friend’s except that it’s all white and stringy like.
    
    And he looks to his right, and there’s another old man sittin’ there, wearing his buddy’s clothes, only this guy’s bald and fat, with stubbly cheeks and a red nose, all but overflowin’ the chair, but he can still kinda see his buddy in there too.
    
    And then, feeling a bit panicky, he looks to the other side, and there’s another old, old man, and he’s all eaten up by cancer with big red splotches and liver spots all over, drooling down his shirt, and just a bit of white hair left, his eyes all cloudy and blind, and he looks a bit like his other buddy too…
    
    And then all at the same time, all four boys scream and run, almost knocking each other down, they’re all trying to get out the door so fast. They run all the way back to where their car was parked, and none of ’em ever admit to the others just what it was that made ’em run like that.
    
    And none of ’em ever admit that the reason they kept the ante going was because they each had the best damned poker hand they’d ever seen, and if they hadn’t seen what they did when they did, they woulda kept raisin’ the bet forever, just so they wouldn’t lose out on their big chance on that pot in the middle.
    
    But you know, when the devil’s the dealer, ain’t no winnin’ that pot. So I guess it was a good thing they saw what was at stake, or else maybe they’d still be playing that hand….

Hi everyone, I just found out yesterday that I have some changes coming to my life in the next two months. I live and work in a house at my ex’s work yard and now he will be moving the work yard to a lot with no house or building….
So I will be getting some type of living arrangement, of the mobile home type, I am hoping, if we can find the right size and price. I am a little bit worried about this, at this time there are no improvement on the lot, such as water, sewer, electricity, or cable.
Wasn’t expecting this change, so now I have to get out my “one door closes and another door opens” thinking and see if I can turn this into a rose.
It looks to be a beautiful day here in Socal, bright and sunny already this AM…
Now it’s catching up time for me since you all have been up for hours.

    Thanks for that, Laura, I am now bent on making a sows ear into a silk purse. I admit the news took me a bit aback as it came out of the blue, found out he (ex) got the idea Sat. and signed the papers for the lease on Sun…
    Major part of the move will be over Christmas and tons of things for them to do till then, this added to an already full work schedule, my son is wondering where they will find the time and I am wondering if I will be able to have cable internet. Just think if I have to go on dial up. lol
    Glad I have my boo friends for support as I may be needing it.

I never grasped the significance of the spider/cob web imagery around Halloween till we moved to Puget Sound with its very British Isles climate. This time of year the webs blossom everywhere, much more than I ever noticed in Ohio, and the spooky-misty climate often highlights them with beads of moisture.

Here I’ll repost my spooky Irish music set from last night since there was so little traffic on the thread yesterday.

In Irish traditional music there are a number of “hag” tunes that are old favorites and always popular among players and dancers. At an Irish-trad jam session, if one hag tune is played, it’s not unusual for a number of others to be offered up in quick succession.

Here is a set of 4 ‘hag’ jigs. 3 are in the key of Dmix which is D mixolydian. That means that most of the scale is your normal major-key do-re-mi scale, until the last note C or “ti” which is minor. Many 60’s pop tunes were mixolydian, including “Paperback Writer” and “Last Train to Clarksville.”

I don’t know who these hags are, but just based on their tunes, if I were still single I’d marry any of them.

About a second after the third tune opens, if there’s a piper in the session, he’ll kick in his D drone sound to cast an ominous brooding quality over the rest of the set.

This piece is said to be an old tune that deals with various problems of witches vs. butter. If a witch was present in the house, the churn wouldn’t make butter. Witches, however, couldn’t stand this tune, so it would be played or lilted by mouth during churning to annoy them away.

Finally, one of the most famous of the hag tunes, which reached commercial audiences twice in the mid 70’s, on the Chieftain’s Bonaparte’s Retreat 6th album, and as the title track of the groundbreaking Bothy Band’s 2nd album. I have never found out what the title refers to, but somehow it has an air of believeability.

For those of you who try to play these tunes on instruments or downloaded ABC software, you’ll note that this tune and the set ends abruptly, unresolved on the wrong note in the middle of the scale.

Happy Boo day everyone! And boohoo for the Alito nomination-not that it was at all unexpected, but a nasty trick never the less. I suppose the media will drag out some warmed over terror threats for us and the kiddies to make halloween more scary-another stupid media trick no doubt.

A nice treat though would be for Rove’s house to be egged and tp’d….anyone live near the little monster? hint hint.

So I hope you all get all the treats you want today and no tricky Dicks popping up to spoil the fun.

This appears to be some kind of dark chocolate melted and dripping through our oven rack.

Oh how Gooserock wishes this were the case.

I bought some sticks of black plastic that arrived too warped for their intended use, so I checked some data on the mfr’s web site, bound the sticks into some straight aluminum angle, and cured them in the oven at the recommended 350F for 90 minutes.

Well I must have been on the wrong web page.

The good news is that I had had the presence of so-called “mind” to place an aluminum foil sheet on the lower rack, which stopped molten plastic from falling onto the heating element, and then I had thought to pry the hardening mess loose from the bars as it cooled. So now I just need to find something to cut the drips so I can discard the evidence.

I haven’t been in this much potential trouble since I was 8 years old and decided I could make my own carbon microphone by cooking a Revere Ware pot full of sugar on the stove. As you chemists and chefs might guess, I made a pool of unbreakable stainless-steel-bonding plastic instead.

Newsflash: Danni took it to the man! (well she has been for several weeks) Last minute decision and she won. Today the school passed out IN SUPPORT – UNICEF boxes. The backstory is they weren’t going to because they felt it was too icky poo poo political.. and DanDan felt this was really really BAD and wrote and voiced her dissent. This was a personal victory for her.

And… she won a pumpkin for her attendance record.

  UNICEF too political? We got those little boxes every year when I was in grade school and suddenly it’s too political. Sheesh.

Spent the day out doing errands, then took myself out to dinner so I wouldn’t have to cope with trick-or-treaters all by my lonesome…will be soooo glad to have the spouse back on an earlier schedule. Keeping fingers, toes and other assorted appendages crossed; his home blood pressure readings have been great, so if all goes well next week, he may be back behind the wheel of his bus on the 14th…4 days before his 2 week fall vacation. 🙂

About time to settle in and watch Keith Olbermann on the DVR…have a good night, everyone…

I’m just now watching the Roseanne episode where she’s dressed up as a big bearded guy and to her surprise the bartender believes the disguise. Then she goes to blend in with some guys playing pool.

She’s reporting to Jackie her anthropological findings about why the men talk to each other about sex.

Oh, for the return of those good old days of the Reagan and Bush recessions.
