From Chris Bowers at MyDD:
- Arizona: Jim Pederson
- Maryland: Ben Cardin, and Kweisi Mfume
- Minnesota: Amy Klobuchar, Patty Wetterling, and several others
- Missouri: Claire McCaskill
- Montana: John Morrison and Jon Tester
- Nevada: Jack Carter
- Ohio: Sherrod Brown and Paul Hackett
- Pennsylvania: Bob Casey Jr. and Chuck Pennacchio
- Rhode Island: Sheldon Whitehouse and Matt Brown
- Tennessee: Harold Ford Jr. and Rosalind Kurita
Taken all together, I agree this is a strong field of candidates. I have some serious issues with Bob Casey’s positions on gay rights, stem-cell research, pharmacies and contraceptives, and reproductive rights. I want to beat Rick Santorum as much as anybody, but Jesus H. Christ. All I can say is: “Go Chuck Pennacchio, go!”
As for Corzine, appointing Springsteen to the Senate would be fabulous, in my opinion. The Boss has been speaking up for working folks his whole life, and he’d take the job seriously. But I’d rather he make another heartrending CD. I just hope Corzine chooses someone with the balls to stand up to George W. Bush.
I wonder whether Trent Lott will retire. Maybe he thinks he can become majority leader again if Bill Frist gets indicted.
BooMan, thank you so much for listing Chuck Pennacchio. I think he’s got a slim chance of beating Casey in the primary, but that doesn’t stop me from giving him money and support. We need to show especially in uphill races that there is support and a framework for truly progressive candidates.
Is there any truth to the Springsteen rumor? I think that would be fabulous, and I generally hate the idea of celebrities running for office. But Springsteen and Franken could change my mind. Springsteen is an authentic voice for poor and middle America, and not just as a songwriter and performer. He would be great, he really would.
I’m not familiar with most of these candidates. I’m not trying to be glass-half-empty-man, but are there other Caseys in this bunch? Or put more positively, which of these potential Senators really deserve a look for someone with progressive values?
Bowers made the decision to list Pennacchio, but if hadn’t I would have added him.
I need to bone up on these candidates myself, but I think you can feel safe getting behind Brown in Ohio.
I like Hackett too. He could be a star. But Brown is more progressive.
But Brown is more progressive
Really…?
And hey, let’s add Casey’s position on Iraq to the list of his negatives:
Isn’t that the official Republican position on Iraq? Blecch.
Go, Chuck, Go!
not only does Chuck Pennacchio want out of Iraq, he even has an Iraq exit strategy [.pdf]!
by the way, the Cook Political Report lists Gerlach as a toss-up and Fitzpatrick as competitive (Pat Murphy).
I’d be soooo happy to see Gerlach (my “representation”) lose. Fitzpatrick too; Pat comes across as a bright, do the right thing kind of guy.
I really didn’t need any more reasons to dislike Casey…but thanks for pointing this out. Like The Nation magazine, I have taken the pledge. So I simply can’t help someone like Casey, sorry. I wonder who else on this list of candidates will not work for peace?
What are Springsteen’s qualifications? (I’m open-minded about it, just curious.)
Well, I can’t cite his resume. But the few times I’ve seen him, he’s gone far out of his way to make clear political statements, and usually to direct people who agree to an appropriate charity. He plugs local food banks at most appearances, and has helped Toys for Tots and Habitat for Humanity often with direct contributions.
His political contributions show generosity to Bill Bradley and Tim Wirth, two American politicians I particularly admire.
Here’s a speech of Bruce’s from a Kerry fundraiser last year. It’s a bit vague, but no more so than an actual politician would have done:
I love how he mentions Wellstone and passion. Springsteen for Senate!
Why is no one talking about Frank Pallone for the NJ senate seat? He’s a really good guy and he’ll do well in the coastal counties, most of which are Republican strongholds.
He pitched his case on NJN, last night, and I must admit, I had forgotten all about Pollone. I remember that NJ Citizen Action endorsed him several times when he was still a member of the state legislature. As far as I know, he’s still a strong progressive.
Anyone out there know much about Pallone? Springsteen is a good idea, but Pallone is an experienced legislator. He’s my top choice unless and until I hear something negative.
As far as I know he is on the short list. I’d rather Corzine pick a non-politician, personally. NJ Politics has been corrupt. I’d like a clean slate. Maybe Jon Stewart is interested. Make him ranking member of the Intelligence Committee. It would make for good hearings.
no to springsteen….we need him on the concert circuit ..plus he is a sharecropper now…politics is too dirty for him.
im going to see the roches in dec….how bout one of them for senate?
how bout rob andrews switches from the house to the senate?
the norcross machine can replace andrews with any old dem.
Perhaps Bon Jovi.

Stephan Crane would get my vote in a heartbeat. Too bad he died of TB in 1900 at the age of twenty-nine.
I personally believe he would now be considered the greatest author this country ever produced had he lived another 30-40 years.
Perhaps Chris didn’t list Barbara Radnovsky for Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s seat because he thinks a D winning a state-wide race in Texas is hopeless. And that’s hard to argue with. However, a year ago, didn’t anyone beating Santorum look like a long shot? A lot can change in a year.
What gave me a little hope for getting at least one non-evil Senator from my state was when I heard Barbara say, “Anything that I’ve wanted in my life that I really worked hard for – I’ve gotten. I want to be a Senator.” It looks to me like she’s working hard for it. So who knows? Maybe . . . .
