So, tomorrow is Thanksgiving. That’s no excuse not to blog. Make your wingnut relatives embrace the frog. Ask them to pick out their favorite shirt or bumper sticker.
Who is bringing the mashed potatoes?

Who is bringing the mashed potatoes?
No mashed potatoes, going to my parents on Lawn Guyland with 2 deserts (cheesecake and chocolate pumpkin pie) and organic hormone-free turkey. Hopefully someone will have mashed potatoes there.
chocolate pumpkin pie sounds GOOD.
I can post the recipe, but some might take the posting of a recipe the wrong way. 😉

Oooh, did you make it yet? We’ll be needing a review at the FBC on Friday…
My reply ended up below, but I will report the results on Friday. I am making it tonight.
what’s your address?
I e-mailed it to you.
Boran sent me his e-mail address. As if! I want your street address. I’m comin’ over for some cake, buster!
Ackk! Nevermind, move along, nothing to see here. I’m a little slow today.
organic hormone-free turkey.
aren’t those better?
free-range too?
Darcy and her best friend tell everyone about my mashed potatoes.
My mom made great mashed potatoes, and she always left little lumps in them on purpose because it’s just better like that.
LOTS of BUTTER too. LOTS. And salt and pepper. LOTS.
It also helps when I can get the freshest, most tender little organic potatoes from the local organic farmers.
(Tomorrow we’re going to be with friends, but i”ll be checking in and blogging a good part of the day too.)
Lots of lumps. I still mash my by hand and leave the peels on. Instead of milk I use heavy whipping cream, lots of butter too with a dash of garlic….yum!
Off to night to the repub sis’ house in Vegas. Big family gathering. Hope to keep our pact of no political talk when we are together. It is difficult to say the least. She is a great cook however and hostess with the mostest. She always makes it a fun four day gathering. We play lots of poker and golf.
May you all find a little something to be grateful for this year. I know I am grateful that it is almost Fitzmas. I am extremely grateful for this site. I have learned so much here and you all have contributed to that. I am a better person for knowing you all.
Have a safe and Happy Holiday friends!
Hi Susan and a shout out to Aloha and Boo too, Happy Thanksgiving to all….
We are taking the easy way out tomorrow and all going to a special Thanksgiving Dinner at Black Angus…we just didn’t want to cook and pre dinner we are gathering at daughter Shanna’s for cocktails, which reminds me I must hurry over to the cafe to get some drink ideas from Cabin Girl and others.
(from the oprah show today with Rachel Ray)
* 1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice
* 2 oz. Absolute Citron vodka OR white tequila
* 1 oz. Cointreau liquor
* Cup of ice
* Optional: Splash of sparkling water
* Optional: Squeeze of lemon
Shake ingredients in a shaker and put in chilled martini glasses. Put pomegranate fruit into glass as garnish. Serves 2.
Thanks Cabin,I just noticed your comment….we will try that one.
That sounds scrumptious!
You comin’ over? We’re having those tomorrow…
Have a wonderful day with your family Diane! I like the easy way out but do miss the turkey leftovers.
One year at Thanksgiving my mom went to my sister’s house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick.
She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, my mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish hen, and inserted it into the turkey, and re-stuffed the turkey. She then placed the bird(s) back in the oven.
When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing.
When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird.
With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, “Patricia, you’ve cooked a pregnant bird!”
At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry.
It took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs!
OMGROTFLMAO!!! That is the funniest thing I have ever heard. Oh would I love to pull that one on my sis. Will have to save for next year.
We got a little pie-crazy: Pumpkin, Apple, Cranberry-Apple, French Silk, Peanutbutter-Chocolate… There will be 5 pies and 6 people at our dinner. …Someone’s not getting a pie. 😉
There is this house in our area with a big sign out front, decorated with cornucopias and turkeys and such, that reads:
“Be thankful that you can still afford to live in this neighborhood!”
Not sure whether to laugh or cry.
Thought this was pretty cute — from the Seattle NPR station:

Yup – that’s definitely a task for “some people” :^)
my family is scattered this thanksgiving and im not motivated to go to anyones house and watch THEIR family be together (can you tell i have abandonment issues?)….so im going to work with my girlfriend (nursing home) to hang out with the old people…im bringing cookies and candy and im gonna flash old men and tell dirty jokes.
then we’re going to philly to have dinner in chinatown.
i always eat Christmas dinner in Chinatown.
really?
i have eaten many there…my brother is a chef and his birthday is christmas eve…so christmas eve is usually a big 7 fishes dinner with the family…but christmas day we usually dont want to do a damn thing so we go to chinatown…always the same restaurant….imperial inn on 10th st…my brother is friends with the chef so he does all these special birthday dishes and sends out a big dessert thing with sparklers….i almost never eat at any other chinatown restaurant.
which ones are good cause im thinking i need to expand my chinatown restaurant horizons.
this year i think we are switching and doing christmas eve in chinatown and christmas dinner at my brothers new house (he just got married and invited 80 people to christmas dinner)
Here are some of my favorites.

A QUESTION FROM BUMPKIN LAND
A new Filipino restaurant just opened up in town. If we went there, what would we eat?
P.S. Darcy wants to know why Filipino is spelled with an F.
I don’t really know. I’ve never eaten Filipino food. And I don’t know why they spell it with an F either.
Darcy decided to give them a try. She went by to get a fast take-out lunch.
First, they had no entrees without meat. (Hello???? Everybody has vegetarian offerings these days.)
So, they said they could make her noodles and vegetables. That’s what she ordered. She got some greasy noodles with bits of cabbage and carrots. She doesn’t plan to return.
I bet those old men love you.
I’m making it tonight and will have a full report for Friday.
Cool…and of course we’ll be sharing Thanksgiving Happy or Horror Stories on Friday!
Prizes to be awarded for the best and worst turkey-day tales…
Well, I can’t resist — I’ll be trying out this new recipe. I mean, how could it not be good?
Fig & Prosciutto Cornbread Stuffing Muffins
8 oz. cornbread stuffing mix
1/2 cup melted butter
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup finely chopped prosciutto
1/2 cup canned creamed corn
3/4 cup chopped dried figs
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
Combine all ingredients in large mixing bowl, spoon into muffin cups and bake for ~30 minutes at 350.
Mmm…figs and proscuitto, who needs turkey?
that sounds really really good
i love anything with figs
Can I just sit in the corner and drink heavily?
As long as you wear your BooTrib t-shirt.
We’ll even bring the drinks to you. What’s your preference?
P.S. I’m leaving for about an hour. I am going to buy tobacco from the Indians. Really.
I’ll make sure the hookah and the marmotdude are ready to smoke out, and don’t you worry, I’ll be in Class A BooTrib uniform.
Hey, I’m wearing mine (okay, it’s one of the boy’s shirts) right now!
Ohhhhhhh … sniff …. I detect thinly veiled bragging that she can fit in her children’s clothing! Do tell!
without my mom, so it’s going to be a bit odd — my oldest sister’s intent on keeping us together as a family so the spouse and I are heading up to her place tomorrow (we got assigned wine as our contribution, got a couple good whites), but our usual contribution of chauffeuring Mom to the celebration will be missing. Almost wishing now that I’d planned something a bit more low-key, just for me and the spouse. I’ll muddle through emotionally somehow.
Oh, BREAKING NEWS — Gov.- Elect Corzine reportedly will pick State Senator Nia Gill as his successor in Washington, according to CNN…MyDD and the Orange Empire have the same speculation, FWIW…
which whites are good?
Got a Fetzer Pinot Grigio and a Sauvignon Blanc (forget which one, I think it’s a New Zealand import); I wanted something different than the usual Chardonnay. Both the PG and Sauv aren’t quite as dry as a Chard, but not as sweet as Rieslings which is my usual favorite. (I think that’s why I’m usually stuck taking wine; my family knows that I’ll pick something good…)
We will be bringing the pies, the stuffing, and the cherry Coke Jell-O salad, all of which are specialities de la maison. They will be doing the work on the turkey and all the other goodies.
I hope politics does not rear its ugly head but if it does I am not afraid to let fly. Most of our family, the ones that care about such things, are bleeding-heart tree-hugging liberals anyway so it’s not like other families where accounts of family get-togethers start off with “Among the injured were . . . “
Omir, you made cherry coke jello salad, and didn’t share the recipe with us at the FBCafe? I’m sure it was just an oversight… 🙂
Does it taste fizzy?
You are hysterical tonight Susan. Oh crap…gotta run and catch a plane. Love you guys! Namaste!
I was serious, not funny! I want to know if it feels fizzy when i eat it!
(Hugs and love … have a great time!)
Off to the cafe to share the recipe . . .
kids, houses and villages after bein’ a litterbug.” He looked at me and said, “Kid, we don’t like your kind, and we’re gonna send you fingerprints
off to Washington.”
Well ,I did the stock yesterday,(chicken) and the smaltz, and the mashers today- and the cranberry sauce.
YES lots of butter!
Stock. I’m impressed. That canned stuff doesn’t cut it, does it…. all that work!.
And tell us more about the apple butter
It’s not all that much work-if you are used to it.
Hey all you gotta do is kill a chicken, pluck it- roast it-
OH-never mind.
oh gee- first you get a pumpkin and bake it for about two hours. Then you peel it and simmer it down with some nice apples that your bestest buddy brought you for your birthday-along with a cinnamon stick and some whole cloves and some fresh grated nutmeg.Add some butter and let it cook down ’til it is very thick-then you add it to your pumpkin pie.
Wanna hear my mincemeat recipe?
HAHAHA
Oh yeah and the PIE- with my extra famous homemade apple pumpkin butter.
I just read the 54 comments above this. And I have to tell you. I love you all. This was such a natural, wonderful conversation. It flows.
You are the best group of friends a Kansas girl could have and I want you all to know that.
This has already been one of the best Thanksgivings.
Thank you.
I have to tell you all that I agree with Katiebird.
I do not have to work tomorrow, so I will be home. I will not be eating here. I will try to go ut to eat. My children are all going to inlaws or working, so I will find a place around here that will be serving dinner and do it like that.
