30-something Xicano Democrat in Tucson, Arizona. I have a passion for social justice issues as well as seeking to help ignite a productive dialog regarding immigration reform. Lately I spend most of my time on Tw
Picking is the hard part because there are so many places to go but it’s generally a combination of seeing photos, reading about the geology (which we both really like) and finding good hikes. I do most of the planning — we buy hiking guides, nature guides, travel guides and do a bunch of research on the web. I think planning trips are really fun.
BTW, that’s the Painted Desert (in Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park) — wave to Indy, she’s not that far away.
I’m actually going to try to get out to Wupatki the next week or so to take some pictures, and there are some really pretty Painted Desert vistas there. Any requests?
I’ve been to both, Wupatki and Painted Desert. I think that we’re taking our 6 year old to Painted next time we’re out in Az, next August. Great shot, Andi! It looks more like a lunar landscape.
Thanks. That was taken before I went digital…I scanned it in a few years after I took it. I always think that the sky loses something in my digital photos (or maybe it’s just my camera!)
No, unfortunately I was only stopping in momentarily…I was still in college, and some friends of mine and I were carpooling from Ann Arbor out to Pasadena to watch the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl.
We didn’t stop anywhere for long, but we stopped a LOT of places. In just that trip, we hit Grand Canyon, Painted Desert / Petrified Forest, the Hoover Dam, Bryce Canyon, Mesa Verde, Capitol Reef, and the Four Corners.
to do drive-by sightseeing you picked a great area for it. I sure hope you drove UT-12 between capitol reef and bryce — got to be one of the most outstanding scenic drives in the country.
More great scenery on the road between Blanding, Utah and Torrey, Utah. It really was some of the best I’ve seen, all the way up to Capitol Reef National Park.
I would have to go back and look at our trip log, but I definitely remember being blown away by all of the scenery, and having the biggest surprise be that the beauty wasn’t contained, nor even concentrated, within the NP boundaries.
That was my first time ‘out west’ (well, that I was old enough to remember) and I’ve made it a point to make at least one trip back out that way each summer.
I love the road in that picture; how it looks like a ribbon and disappears for a moment. And the aspens at the end. You know, their roots are all connected…
Okay now you’re freaking me out, because that’s exactly why I like it. Get out of my head, SN…or, at least, don’t poke around too much while you’re in there, it could shock you. 😉
So this is where you all are!
I was stumbling around in the old Cafe, having had a couple of Hefe-Weizen at Indy’s suggestion.
Today’s brand is “Franziskaner”:
I am having the one on the right, the left one is a ‘dunkel’, I think.
It so happens that there are a few left in my fridge. Some serious mental focus…. and woops, you have a whole (imaginary) bottle to yourself. Skål, kippis (for Sven), salut and cheers!
And Man Eegee’s diary on Operation Yellow Feather is still sitting on their recommended list at Political Cortex… (10 days now, I think?)
I am almost thinking that we should go over and “UNrecommend” it just so as not to be perceived as abusing the rating system there. We want the NEXT EFFORT to be as well received. lol
What does the rest of the Booswarm conspiracy think?
I really dig the layout over there, you and the rest of the gang have done a great job at building a niche in the blogoshere. I promise to head over there more often, how else am I supposed to procrastinate 🙂
Thanks again for your support with Operation Yellow Feather, we’re working on something similar for the SCOTUS nomination, on the lines of “The Twelve Days of Alito”. Will keep you all posted.
Good idea CM1, I can’t view the Recommended list on it because it’s my diary (not sure if that is standard for the site); but I would agree with you that Unrecommends are a good idea.
Here is the link to the diary, if any other BooTribbers recommended it.
I’ve got the hot chocolate
(with damn big hail) for Indy and SN.
That’s breathtaking. I would love to go there someday. HOw do you and your husband pick where you’re going to go and then go about planning the trip?

There are some great vistas there so anything you take will make me happy.
Wupatki is my third favorite ‘ruin’ park (after Chaco and Hovenweep. Walnut Canyon is pretty good too.)
I was out there a few years back, but I was there in the winter, so it wasn’t quite as spectacular (there was actually snow!)
Here’s some petrified wood from the forest though 🙂
Nice pic, ejmw. I like the perspective.

is really “cool” — in all senses of the word. And getting to see the desert with snow is pretty dam spectacular.
Did you go hike Blue Mesa in the snow?
No, unfortunately I was only stopping in momentarily…I was still in college, and some friends of mine and I were carpooling from Ann Arbor out to Pasadena to watch the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl.

When we were out there this past August, we stopped again at Mesa Verde. The boran2 boy was seeing it for the first time and was suitably impressed.
Why thank you. Here’s one for you.
thank you right back at ya.

Great pic, is that today?
Here’s another approaching thunderstorm (the colors are not ‘fixed’). I posted it in the Cafe back in August – I believe:
Fixed or whatever, those colors are gorgeous.
Gorgeous sky. In fact, just plain gorgeous
The pic is from a couple of years ago.
Were you asking if my pic was today? I’m sorry, I couldn’t really tell from the thread. If you were, no, it was taken about a week ago.
Here is Sedona, Az, from last August:
Nice framing, boran2. Is that by Oak Creek?
Yep, they had just filmed a Japanese beer commercial there earlier that day. That is the boran2 boy in the center.

But not without a parting shot.
Bryce Canyon
May your dreams be Blue and Dotty.
We started down the trail there with the stroller, and walked about 25 feet before turning around. It was just too steep.

For now I will not do anything.
Yes, you evil people. You clearly are a cabal.
I think it’s more the effect of not a lot of new diaries being written over there (hint hint) than it is that you all did a carpet-bombing recommend.
We LOVE you all! Just come and talk to us more and participate in the recommend process of the other diaries.
