To the tune of “Hark, the Herald Angels.”
(–everyone!)
Uncle George and Auntie Mabel
Fainted at the breakfast table.
This should be sufficient warning
Not to do it in the morning.
Ovaltine has set them ri-ight.
Now they do it every ni-ight.
Uncle George is hoping, soon,
To rip one off in the afternoon.
Auntie Mabel has a hunch:
Soon they’ll be doing it for lunch.
as a herd of 75 bison remained loose for a second day. Evening news said that they were back in the corral again.
Click on the WDAY link for some video, other local TV had some great shots of the herd running through the snow covered landscape. You could almost image the scene being in the 1800s.
I should be relocating this spring to a piece of land not far from a bison ranch. Perhaps I’ll witness a similar scene some time. (Thankfully, there aren’t any interstates between the homestead & the ranch — just quiet, mainly dirt roads.)
Seems they knocked down a corner post, and the rest was history. Most likely the fence system needed some work, and that was the weak point.
I forget what they weigh, but it takes a very sturdy fence to hold them in especially when they decide to move as a herd. They will just plow straight through a normal livestock fence. So volunteers will be out fixing damage to those fences over the next several days.
After reading the story above I’d like to know how they got them back into the corral. They sounded impossible to herd. I’m always fascinated by bison
We had excitement in rural Missouri today. An AmerenUE (the electric company)hydroelectric facility had a catastrophic failure before dawn. There are two reservoirs, an upper and a lower. The upper reservoir’s walls gave way today. 1.5 BILLION gallons of water were released in 12 minutes. If this had been summer there would have been at least 1,000 campers along the Black River who would have been hit by the wall of water. If the lower reservoir had failed, the whole town of Lesterville would have been underwater. Here’s the story
It’s just amazing no one died. Hopefully those three youngsters will be well soon. Seems like the news of catastrophes gets more bizarre by the day.
Re: Bison herding; From what I heard on the radio this evening it was a matter of hay and finesse. Hungry bison followed the hay. The finesse part is critical to herding bison. They still have nearly all their wild characteristics, so they can be very skittish.
Today more experienced bison ranchers showed up to help. And I guess there were fewer sightseers and news crews. It sounded like the the non-ranchers had made the process more difficult just by being in the way yesterday.
I like it, I like it! So many things happening! Flowing water, frost crystals building up, older snow, but still very pristine white, interesting streambed under the water surface, and fascinating shadows, wow!
And it’s one of those that initially plays tricks with your eyes as to depth perception. I bet this is even more spectacular in person. Have you done an enlargement yet?
Hey, NDD. Truly glad you like the photo. Yep, it’s an absolutely amazing world out here, with this type of visual interplay happening almost everywhere, natural variations occurring in the smallest increments of time.
Indeed, it’s wonderful in person, to live within this constant transformation as a matter of total environment. This particular stream emerges from the earth a short distance uphill (behind me in the photo) & meanders down the mountainside until its waters eventually feed the Neversink River, which then feeds the great Delaware.
Alas, I don’t do enlargements due to severe lack of funding. ‘Nuff said on that.
Is that actually your photo of Venus downthread? Excellent. Just wonderful.
Also, before I forget, since you seem to have an affinity for the natural world that is similar to mine, have you ever read Barry Lopez’s, Arctic Dreams? I highly recommend it, and no need to buy new, as the used book stores usually have them.
“lack of funding”, well, I’ve been there, still sort of there, and for me no amount of dollars in the bank could make up for a lack of connection to the land.
Totally agreed on that. It’s incredibly difficult for many folks to understand what I mean when I say I consider myself extremely wealthy, simply living where I do. But wealthy I am — as are we all, given proper time & vision.
Thanks very much for the book recommendation. Always hungry for excellent reading; will see if I can’t secure a copy.
oh no — I just showed up and all the liquor’s gone. We’ve been robbed! Whoever it was left the menorah but took all the liquid Christmas cheer. Must have been an insurgant in the war against Christmas. Hope those video cameras find the perp.
If you can make out Venus over the boathouse at right, slightly lower than the moon.
Puget4 and I have been in Santa’s shop for 12 hours and we’re knocking off for the night!! One more week of extra-hour madness, and then we can return to 9-to-5 madness.
Manee,
I am glad I was helpful, but I really have to point out that all I did was find a small technical error that was keeping your design from implementing.
All the real work on the redesign was yours. You did a great job! I think you will have a lot of fun with it.
is in effect for my area but I’m wondering if this just might apply to the whole country which would explain why people aren’t screaming for Bush’s impeachment, despite the fact that he is an lying fuckup who is working very haaarrd to destroy this country, Iraq, and the very air we breathe.
I slept in a little this morning and I’m still finishing my coffee. They’re conducting a class in my walking room at work, so there was no reason to show up at the crack of dawn today.
Remember the video camera is on. Lewd and wanton behavior is strictly encouraged.
Here late at night?
Or first thing in the morning?
and since it’s post midnight ET,
To the tune of “Hark, the Herald Angels.”

I’m tempted to drink Katiebird’s manhattan before she gets here.
She had two back in the other cafe.
But personally I recommend the Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout.
Over here…I saved you a spot…
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Peace
He’ll be right there — just so long as this isn’t someplace that requires a scoop.

Some bison info here

Andi, I believe you requested spring water on the rocks? 😉
to end the day.
And so to bed.
My pleasure. Rest well.

Alas, anon, to bed. Have a good night!
Allrighty, since nobody’s here I’ll just make off with all the remaining liquor. < boran2 walks out of the cafe with several heavy boxes. >

Now where’d I set that beer?
Wow. Truly lovely photo, Gooserock. Amazing that you captured Venus as well as the moon.
Thank you! That’s a fine image for the day’s end.
great photo… ah hem… I had to make a spectacle out of myself to see Venus. I’m amazed it showed up at all.
to the tune of “let it snow”
Oh the weather outside is frightful
but the beer is so delightful
We have a barrel that’s nice and cold
let if flow let it flow let it flow.
(source: alt.drunk.b@$tards, yes I have been on the internet that long)
Marmotdude should rejoin the workforce and write for Hallmark. hahaha
Katiebird, I wanted to thank you again for your help with my site’s redesign. You rock! 🙂
Marmotdude is too cool for Hallmark. In fact, he is too cool for work. But he wishes a Piece of Earth for you.
katiebird is the cat’s pajamas. (I have no idea why I chose that phrase except that it just sounds right.)

. . . I thought you said FROG advisory. . . .
A Foggy morning to you!! I love foggy mornings, they always remind me of the place I long to be.
Andi, can I steal that whole comment? If it fit, it would be a wonderful signature. But, it won’t fit.
Good morning. You’re probably off to work and won’t be able to answer this but you’re welcome to steal anything from me that you want.
Hey, Andi!!
I slept in a little this morning and I’m still finishing my coffee. They’re conducting a class in my walking room at work, so there was no reason to show up at the crack of dawn today.
Traffic will be worse, but it was worth it.
so I guess we can head on over there.
