Today marks the anniversary of the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, back in 1892. Sadly, there will be no Nutcracker in the the Nation’s capital this holiday season, due to labor strife.
<thumps bar> Say, what does a monk have to do to get some service around here?
I thought Monks were sworn to silence.
Thumping aside ;o)
Use their connections.
“Good Lord, we are in sore need of coffee and a bagel.”
Too bad, it is such an integral part of the season.

My daughter was in the cast of NY City Ballet’s Nutcracker a couple of seasons (she had to give up ballet because of bad knees) 3-4 years back.
A fantastic production.
Good morning :o)
My froggy bottom is planted by the fireplace, drinking coffee.
I’d like to remind all frogs to make sure that Alice’s day 6 and 7 diary in Tampopo’s 12 Days of Justice series gets sent out to all Sens. and Judiciary Committee members.
Days 6 and 7
Alice’s Day 7 Diary is now up. Please recommend.
It really needs a different name though! ๐
2 10-oz pkgs chopped spinach, drained & mixed
1-1/2 cups herbed stuffing mix (not cooked)
parmesan cheese
3 beaten eggs
3/4 cup melted butter
pine nuts
Combine all except parmesan and chill.
Roll into 1-inch balls & place on cookie sheet.
Balls may be frozen at this point and put into ziploc bag. (What a line!)
Bake in oven at 350 for 15 minutes or so
Roll in parmesan & enjoy.
They are good both hot or cold.
How ’bout Popeye Power? ;o)
Popeye Power… Perfect!! ๐
Good morning to all! My son is 7 today! Hard to believe that 7 years ago we went to the hospital for my wife’s emergency c-section. It’s off to Grandma and Grandpa’s for a small celebration and our family’s Chanukah festivities. Save some coffee for me, see you all later!
Hope both celebrations are wonderful and that he gets to light the candles (always a big deal with the kids in our family).
I want to be there! That looks totally fun.
Does this mean that next year I can send you in my place?
I’m reposting part of a comment from last night’s Cafe
I’m trying to put together my messages first to family & friends about the Press For Impeachment Now (my name for it) campaign, then to Office holders and Letters to the Editor). I can’t remember what I thought I would do today.
But, I’m pretty sure that it isn’t as important as that.
a little oxygen and get that Prozac to kick in during his Asia tour but the next wave is coming for him and he has his back to it not even seeing it while he’s floating around on that deep dark black sea on his water wings. His angry radio address declaring to us all that he is going to peer into all of our orifices whether we all like it or not tells me that Rove is once again too busy to steer the idiot and he is going to attack the issue again instead of some “people” and fuck up all over again just like he did the last time Rove was distracted by having to answer to Fitz.
One of our totos rushing towards delicious cat doo-doo between December blooming daisies and frost. (I stopped him just in time!)
ummm! Tasty!
It’s infrequent enough here (none at all last year)that nobody quite knows what to do-it’s amazing how many people think that owning a 4×4 suv means it’s ok to drive full speed regardless of conditions. A friend told me that last week when it was just icy he drove his ratty Subaru through a farmer’s field to get around a road full of crunched and flipped behemoths. One guy in the ditch glanced up as mi amigo cruised by and he said the look he got made him snicker all day long.
cruisin’ down a snowy road passing everyone in sight.
In my VW bug.
So much so that I once got ticketed for it. A cop pulled up behind me as I was chugging merrily up a hill in a snow squall. He put on his lights and siren so I pulled over, and then got really mad for my ‘trying to cause an accident’ because I stopped directly.
Result: a speeding ticket for going 20 mph under the speed limit. Because he said weather conditions required going 30 mph under the limit. I fought it in court, pointing out that I was from east Cleveland where we get such snow weekly and both I an my car could handle my careful 20-mph-under-the-limit speed. I lost.
This was in the heart of red, Jesus-protect-us-police-from-our-enemies-in-the-media, voteswitching Ohio.
Those old bugs were real snow cruisers, weren’t they? Yes it’s definitely not what you drive but how you drive it. My job requires that I show up for work in adverse weather conditions and all I’ve got is an old 2WD Toyota truck, chains and cinder blocks for ballast. But then there really isn’t much scary weather here.

Inquiring minds want to know on this breathless night!
Read, commented, recommened, hotlisted (done, done, done & done)
I feel like I should be tiptoeing and whispering.
I know, I’ve been hanging out at Susan’s place on the front page. I think I just didn’t want to mess this place up.
But, I’m eating dinner now — and the Cafe seems a more appropriate location for that.
Have you recovered from yesterday yet?
Pretty much recovered from the stress part, the eating recovery will probably take weeks.
I wish we lived closer to each other so I could join you for walks once in a while. I keep thinking of your lovely woods.
Are the paths passable now?
They were always passable; I haven’t had to stop taking walks. We got about 8″ which isn’t that much in terms of taking walks — it just means more exercise. Now when we had the 24″ of snow — that was pretty much impassable.
(I just got tired of whispering).
Do you want a drink?
I’d rather you come over and we’ll take the big flashlight and take the dogs for a walk. There’s still enough snow that everything is quiet and still in the woods.
Maybe we could pretend I’m there? It won’t be that hard for me to imagine.
For some reason my feet have been cold all night (I am now wearing socks under my slippers, but will soon be wearing two pairs of socks under them) and I think they’re numb to my knees.
By the time you get back from your walk I’ll probably be just as cold as you!
Not there’s something you can’t do IRL — have two conversations with the same person at the same time. Though I was thinking of abandoning the other one so I wouldn’t hve to keep going back and forth between the two diaries.
Well, if we’re staying here, I’m having a drink. Are you taking a walk?
I’ll fix it while your gone.
Nah, I’m not going to take a walk. It’s actually pretty cold out; it was one of those ideas that is much more appealing to think about doing than to actually do.
Well, it’s lucky I snuck into the kitchen and filled my mug with wine & I ditched the day clothes and am decked out (bring our conversation from the other thread here) in pajamas (with a heavy tee-shirt underneath), 2 pairs of socks & slippers.
But, that creeping numbness is still there. It’s 18.3 outside. I don’t know why my feet are so cold though — it’s 72.5 in here. Mister must have jacked up the thermostat for me. But, it hasn’t helped.
I wouldn’t go out for a walk, either.
So. Now What?
margin, that is. If we’re going to keep chatting, don’t reply to this here but start a new comment. I’ll find you.
Anyway, are all you Kansans cold-blooded? I saw that kansas was suited up for the arctic over in DF’s diary.
I’m actually famous for a stable internal temperature. But, I’ve noticed since I’ve lost so much weight that I’m often uncomfortable.
Nothing like this though.
And last year, mister almost completely sealed the house. Where before we had gales driving through certain parts of the front room — now it’s all calm.
We’ve always kept the temp at 68 degrees in the house. He must have put it up because of my complaints.
But, I really don’t know what’s wrong. Maybe I’ll get the flu tomorrow?
Do you have cirulation problems? I have somewhat poor circulation in right leg from breaking it and my foot gets much colder than the rest of me.
I never have had. I get it check because of the diabetes pretty regularly and I was OK last spring.
Now that I’ve got that second pair of socks on, I’m really quite toasty and comfortable.
I think the wine is helping also.

I saved this for the cafe since I wasn’t supposed to be in the other diary.
I have been slapped once — by my older sister. She was making dinner for her boyfriend and was greasing the outsides of potatoes before putting them in the oven to bake them and was having some trouble managing them and the other things she had going and was very stressed. So I walked into the kitchen and said “Can I help you” and she slapped me with her margarine covered hand. She was just used to me teasing her that she just reacted to the sound of my voice and not to what I said. It was a great moment in our sibling relationship because I’ve been able to tease her about it for the last 39 years.
I have an astonishingly similar story. That is so weird. I’m astonished. Really.
But, I am closing this joint down. It sort of sucks.
We’ve got a new joint open, Let’s go there!
I’m here, with absolutely nothing to say. Blame katiebird, she made me come over here and stare dully into the distance.
Ahh, Kansas — I didn’t mean to be bad (and didn’t someone tell me recently not to feel guilty about anything?)
Come to the new cafe! Please?
Hello, everyone! Hope you’re all doing well, enjoying a mellow evening. Breakfast is on the stove here & I have a sense I’ll be nodding off relatively soon — the mountain air seems extra potent tonight.
Less than three full days left to Solstice. I’m very pleased.
Hi, good to see you, can’t talk now. . .
Come to the new cafe!
See you there?
come over to the new cafe.
