She posted a potato dumpling recipe in the old cafe that sounds like a latke variant.
Now Hannukah is over and I don’t know when my Russian neighbor will make them again. All I can do is stalk her or buy frozen, but those won’t be the same.
Potato kugel is good substitute for latkes. Taste is nearly the same, it’s much easier to make, and it doesn’t require as much oil so it’s even a bit healthier.
potato kugel into casual conversation with the other Russian ladies on my constitutional route.
The latkes neighbor invited people in after the family had lit their menorah so we could admire it and enjoy treats.
We old men of various faiths swiftly commandeered the latkes and the softest rug and ate ourselves silly arguing about Abraham, whom most of us knew personally, to the great consternation of the Hindus, who scoffed and hmmmphed and kept trying to grab the latkes, but failed.
Another advantage of potato kugel — you can make small batches for yourself. We have it, applesauce, and a side vegetable for a meal. Anything left is cut up into single portions and frozen.
Here’s a recipe. It can easily be cut to make a smaller amount.
Potato Kugel (9×13 pan)
5 medium potatoes garlic powder
15 grindings of pepper 2 large Onions
1/8 c. oil in potatoes 1 t. salt
1 1/2 t. baking soda 1/8 – 1/4 c. oil in dish
5 T. flour 3 eggs
Preheat oven to 450°. About 5 minutes before potato mixture is ready, pour oil in dish so that it comes up about 1/8 inch on the sides. Put in oven. Grate/shred potatoes and onions. Mix all the ingredients together. When oil is hot, take dish out of oven and pour in mixture. Bake for until golden brown (45 – 1 hr).
even for me. Do I have to peel the potatoes? Can I use peanut oil? And red pepper instead of black?
I just might make some and astonish the Russians!
We never peel the potatoes and we always use peanut oil. We’ve never tried red pepper but if you like it a bit spicier, why not.
Lordy you are a Southern boy. I never saw such oil as they have down here. Great big huge enormous jugs of it and it is Peanut.
though I do enjoy many of the Afro-Southern foods.
I did not know peanut oil was a southern thing, though, I think of it as more Asian. Don’t most Southern cooks use lard?
I had rarely seen peanut oil in the West. Everybody uses Canola and Olive. I moved here and they do farm a lot of peanuts where I am too, but good Lord there is peanut oil all over the place here and used in everything and sold in the biggest jugs I ever did see edible oil sold in.
Latkes and lard mentioned in the same the same thread.
That’s just wrong. š

interesting factoid:
BooMan does not like Chesapeake Bay Crab Seasoning on his potato chips and will only reluctantly consume them.
However, he loves french fries and potato chips.
He is very very disappointed in the Utz Co. for ruining his chips.
interesting factoid:
katiebird hasn’t eaten the homemade foods coworkers bring to work since the 1970s.
AndiF has had no co-workers to tempt her with food since 1989. She still manages to be bad.
bad/good thing: It’s really from not being able to tell who are the secret slobs. It’s a phobia that I’ve cherished because it’s saved me from eating countless needless calories.
My employee(s) have found an exception to the rule as every payday I have to buy lunch..no home cooking allowed.
How awesome to not join in the unhealthy food fest. Though not employed now I was once poorly thought of every Thursday because I brought nothing to the comfort food freakout fest. I finally got tired of all sour looks so I brought Baked Lays when they first came out. Someone asked who had brought them like they were poison and someone else answered, “who do ya think?”
I have been known to eat store-bought foods if I witness the original package being opened.
The thing is, you have to be consistent or you hurt people’s feelings. After a while, you just become the eccentric who doesn’t eat like regular people.
I’ve never told anyone that it’s a fear of their kitchen hygiene.
I didn’t realize you had a “Monk” thing going, how delightfully funny. I am like Polly and the nut bowl in “Along Came Polly” when it comes to worrying about things like that. It has always bothered me though to eat all day long and the people that I worked with did just that and it took its toll too. Another worker and I once boasted that we had made homemade jerky and fed those doggy jerky treats to another coworker as a joke……..you probably would have strung us up and beaten us to death for that one!
I like thinking of it as a “Monk” thing. What is Polly and the nut bowl? Or “Along came Polly”?
I like the doggy jerky treat story!
with Jennifer Aniston playing this free spirited Polly dating and falling in love with Ben Stiller who is an insurance actuary. She is about to eat a handful of nuts out of bowl at the bar and he freaks out and talks about how few people wash their hands after using the bathroom and how much fecal matter is probably in the bowl of nuts and she still eats them.
Ah, well — I feel exactly the same as Ben. Except that I’d hug the knowledge to myself. I’d never spoil someone else’s pleasure in community treats.
My secret will join yours-I will not eat food from someones house unless it’s someone I know and I’ve been in their house/kitchen. It’s also why I don’t eat out except for less than 5 restaurants in the Bakersfield area…it’s becoming quite a phobia with me. And a recent one..as of the last several years and I don’t know why exactly. I’m also very effected by smells and even if a place looks very clean if the smell bothers me that’s it for me.
Ah, the restaurant quirk.
I don’t go to restaurants much (mr katiebird won’t go at all, I go – like you to 4 or 5 places). I am so often repelled by what I see – I have to worry about what I’m not seeing.
I’ve walked out of restaurants where the one staff person is sweeping or moping the floor. Or sneezing. Or doing multiple tasks (food prep/cashiering) without changing gloves at all.
Plus you don’t have any control over ingredients when you eat out.
At the rate I’m going, I won’t be eating at restaurants much longer.
My blood sugar after the New Year festivities was a scandalous 213 and I have chosen the ranch style salad dressing as a convenient scapegoat. (We will not discuss the other worthy candidates at this time)
{{{DuctapeFatwa!!}}}
I haven’t tested my sugars in days. But more from absentmindedness. Maybe I should?
I’m supposed to have my ha1c done this week sometime. So that will tell the tale.
Drink lots of water (2 or 3 litres) & exercise. This should help.
If I wasn’t so horribly far behind on all those projects.
Shoot, I came in here to escape my diabetes paper I need to finish for tomorrow, and you and Ductape are right here reminding me I should really write another section before I quit for the night! Oh well.
{{{CabinGirl}}}
I’m sorry to wreck your evening. But, I love it that you’re work involves something so important to the world and me.
Because of you and ductape, I got TWO more sections of my paper done tonight! Less left for tomorrow (which is good, because I’m going to have to write like the wind to finish this thing on time).
And find one for peripheral neuropathy while you’re at it.
I never did find out what katiebird puts on salads, though… ;>
Just watch out for all the corn syrup in the dressings…maybe a nice balsamic vinaigrette?
Isn’t the PN getting any better?
Though my understanding is that it does not actually get better, the goal is to stop the progress by controlling blood sugar and control the pain by swallowing large numbers of pills.
Both processes are still in early stages, I hope that some progress will be forthcoming, however everything I read says it is not instant.
the oppressed and MilkBone deprived fur one, or his pet?
Teacher Toni has not eaten a potato chip since the summer and has fries only once in 4 months.
Chocolate, however, is a vital food group.
That was mean of you to buy such disgusting potato chips.
Would he like to have the chicken neck I bought and intended to cook for the raccoonies?
Years ago, we had a cute tiny little, sorta dumb cat named Samuel … he loved garbanzo beans.
Someday, I’m gonna have to scan that photo I have of him humping little Darcy’s harp seal puppet. (Yes, he was neutered, but I guess not completely?)
be thankful you have utz! i can’t get them out here.

Happy New Year to all!!!!
And apolgies to those who believe I’m making war on New Year because I didn’t say Merry New Year.
Merry and Happy New Year and Christmas and Hannukah and good will to men and women of all shapes, sizes, ages, sexual orientation, religious orientation, and dermal pigmentation.
Let’s take any excuse to share our most generous, inclusive, and humanitarian thoughts and feelings.
I’ll take this one!
May 2006 be a year of reckoning to those who can’t distinguish between democracy and capitalism. May it go down in history as the year that marked the demise of corporate fascism in America.
and roll around in the Mucky New Year………no more Fox News War on Christmas!!!!! Shit, the day just gets better and better! Fuck off you wackos….what the hell are you going to do for fun now, torture small animals?
And thank you Military Tracy for your extraordinary contribution to the progressive movement. Keep up the REALLY REALLY GREAT work!
Potato dumplings (none / 1)
My grandparents on my mom’s side were respectively Polish and Bohemian and I inherited my grandmothers love of potato dumplings. When my sister start craving them it is an all day project really as we make a double batch. You have to of course first boil potatoes, cool and mash them. While doing so you must also fry up a pound of bacon for the grease. The mashed potatoes are mixed with flour/egg and then rolled out into long ‘snakes’ and cut into small pillows for boiling. By themselves these dumplings are pretty blah to my way of thinking and my sister and I have perfected this recipe to our tastes over the years. This means once the boiling of the dumplings are done and cooled somewhat you then fry some of them up in the bacon grease while adding much sauerkraut to the mix and some of the crumbled up bacon and caraway seed. Due the huge batch made this means we have enough for about 4 big frying pans of this stuff and believe me by the 3rd day it tastes even better as the ingredients have melded together….It may not be the most colorful or attractive looking dish but I think it’s heaven.

Thanks for repeating the recipe. I’m sorry for the bad timing on closing the cafe (it feels like I shut the door right in your face).
I certainly didn’t take it that way and I almost never get upset about stuff like this-just as you said bad timing. I once had a counselor tell me I didn’t get mad enough-about personal stuff(different from my zero tolerance for social justice/anger trigger). I know some people who seem to get mad or offended about stuff on a daily basis and can only wonder why they always seem to be pissed off at such inconsequential crap. I also stay away from people like that-they are very draining.
I knew you wouldn’t take it badly but I still hate closing cafes because it always seems like someone is being cutoff or a conversation is being interrupted. If they didn’t get so slow to load when they get big, I’d be happier to just leave them alone.
You and me, definitely kindred. Missed ya CI… Hope you’ve been well! {{{{CI}}}}
Hey Olivia…as always your art below is magnificent..and it truly is an art to take pictures like as you do.
As for me..I’ve been kinda hit/miss this week in the cafe and posting due to my fatigue problems. I was all set to spend Christmas Day and New Years Eve all day in the Cafe and then ended up doing a lot of sleeping/resting and have way too much stuff in my apartment that needs getting done.
So a very Happy and Healthy New Year to you and to everyone here in the Cafe and all the Tribbers.
I feel my butt grow just reading it.
And sooooooo filling also. When my sister and I get up the energy for this all day cooking event I can tell you I end up literally eating these for breakfast lunch and dinner and in between…and I usually don’t do breakfast or lunch. If I’m feeling like I have to have something with this wonderful concoction I cook pork chops also. I rarely eat meat but there are exceptions to any rule. And if I’m feeling guilty for eating this I will attempt to pretend a semblance of a healthy side dish and microwave some broccoli just because.
the new Manchurian Candidate. Spouse and I had seen it in the theater right after he got home from Iraq and by God it was depressing that evening. It was no better though on this evening. My advice, stay away from the Manchurian Candidate for a bit longer….great movie though in my opinion. Just really depressing in the current political climate.
Thanks for the warning.
We saw Fun with Dick and Jane the other night. Pretty funny, but really short. I have Sideways sitting here, maybe I’ll watch that while I force myself to finish my paper…did you see that?
Take good care of yourself too girl!
I doubt I’ll watch it — I find that the more serious and depressing politics and news the less able I am to read depressing books or watch downer movies. If the rethugs lose a lot of seats in the 2006 elections, it’s likely to have a huge effect on my reading and viewing habits.
and I hated Meryl Streep’s guts 100% and I never thought she could do that to me. I always thought that no matter what her role I would see it as a role but she got me this time, I bought it and I’m still hating her a bit right now.
Had you seen the original movie? Another reason I was hesitant to see this new one because when I go see remakes of movies I like I seem to spend my time making unhappy comparisons.
but they copied many circumstances that are in the headlines right now and there are some scary similarities to things today that I don’t think anybody planned for and boom, I got sucked right in and stopped making the comparisons and found myself wanting to know how they had interwoven our current history into making this one instead. One of the really scary similarities is a radio broadcast about “corporate soldiers” being used to replace our tired out troops and save the military millions…..God forbid!
The one with Denzel is good but I prefer the original. And Angela Lansbury gives one of the most chilling and creepy performances for the baddie in cinema history I think. Plus I’m a huge Sinatra fan.
Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone had a good start to 2006. Peace, prosperity, and good health to all BooTribe and their family.
I haven’t been able to sneak online for three whole days! Three days! But now, the visits are officially over. The house is quiet and peaceful once more. Ahhh.
I didn’t get to spend as much quality time with my camera d/t the above visiting. I picked up two big bunches of tulips — pink and yellow — as I am done with winter and longing for the spring. A few photos I did take. Enjoy!
Tulip, taken 12.28.2005 — such delicate petals… (view large)
Tulip, taken 12.28.2005 — love the striations on the petals… (view large)
Tulip, taken 12.31.2005 — what’s inside š (view large)
It’s great to have you back. You missed a fine time yesterday — katiebird did 5 different cafes.
And thanks for coming back with NEW (oh frabjous day) gorgeous flower pics. The delicacy of the tulip petals in the large version is breath-taking.
I missed you guys too! I actually had a dream about you all … and no, it was nothing like DJ’s dreams. š
We were all getting together to meet, like a BooTrib meet-up, only it was in Hawaii and we were all wearing the frog shirts, sitting around this huge round table. We were in the midst of guessing who everyone was when I woke up. Very strange dream! š
Getting together in Hawaii sounds good to me. I love Kauai.
But what I want to know is how good you were at figuring out who everybody was.
Well the easy ones were those who posted their pics! And isn’t it weird that in my dream I remembered whose photo I’d seen?! Other cues were like, um let’s see – gooserock and puget4 sitting together, you know couple-like? Like a puzzle, sort of. š
And even though I know now, I dreamed you were tall!
I am tall — in my mind, just not physically.
!!!Olivia!!! Thank you. xxoo
The top one is my favorite. .
I heard about and read some of your New Year’s Eve Cafes! 5! I’m sorry I missed them.
{{{{katieb}}}}
It would have been so fun if you had! It was like a quiet evening with friends — except we’re spread all over the country instead of all in the same living room!!
There were lots of good conversations going and some of them ran through several of the cafes.
That is what I love best about BT. Friends that I have met here, who live all over. That does sound like a wonderful time katie. I’m glad that you guys were able to spend some time together! And as I wrote to Andi above, I was thinking of you all and dreaming about you too!
I imagine what it would be like if we were all to get together in-person: a million conversations all going on at once about a million different topics, with people coming and going from each one, contributing here and there. Sounds like what you had yesterday! š
I saw that & was going to reply above, but I’ll say something here.
What a wonderful dream, I wish there was some way to pull such a gathering together (and really, really wonderful if it could be in Hawaii!)
Thanks for sharing it.
…I get so frustrated w/ having to put on so many articles of clothing to go about, that I think I start dreaming of warm places where you can walk around in a T-shirt or shorts or just a swimsuit. I’m sure that was way it was in Hawaii — or maybe it was b/c a couple of BTers have connections, like leezy and diane. Who knows! š
First this strange creature visited my home today. (And then later the snow dinosaur came by.)
The dinosaur is very cool. The artiste is even better – what a cutie.
Well, he had a little help. š
Even better – time well spent
Even better than the snow woman (complete with boobage) my nieces made several years ago…and that my sister used as the Christmas card photo… š
Heading out to dinner soon — I think my body is trying to fight off some sort of bug; I need some good chicken soup (aka Jewish penicillin, if it’s not religionist to say that…). Also a good full night’s sleep in my own bed might help…
This begs the question – In whose bed have you been sleeping?
let’s not spread any nasty rumors this early in the year…I’ve been a very good girl (so far) — spouse and I stayed overnight at a motel in San Jose so we wouldn’t be DUI last night after seeing Christopher Titus at the Improv — bed left much to be desired… š
I was hoping this wasn’t turning into true confessions.
I downloaded FireFox to try to cure the odd link breakups for the advertising (not the human, ahem, coding errors — the code breakups) … and it seems to be helping! (It was Andy’s idea that I switch to Firefox instead of using Safari.)
But FireFox won’t let me give people 4s! boooooooo …
When I come back from watchin’ tv, i’ll fire up the ol’ Safari to give some 4s.
giving 4’s in Firefox — I’m usually just too damn lazy, so I give virtual 4’s. š
You might want to check your comment settings and make sure “Rate Comments” is set to “Yes”…
I use only firefox and have never had trouble giving 4s. kansas has mentioned problems before.
firefox is wonderful! be sure to add the “all-in-one” mouse gestures. i’m addicted to it.
One of my favorite art works by Edward Hopper-Night Hawks that you have up. And one that has been reproduced in various ways with different people in the diner. Hopper was extremely prolific and had some 2500 oil paintings when he died that his wife donated to museum-in Chicago I believe.
Been a long day on short sleep…the Bu girl’s gone to bed and I’m on my way…Night all
Peace
That’s just an absolutely beautiful and rather haunting photograph. Just one more I’m saving to email to my sister..she really needs to start lurking here more instead of asking me if there have been any new photos in the Cafe.
happy damn new year, everybody!
since we’re all out of gum, let’s kick some ass!
with the cute little flags in your hair these days. As soon as we have them out of office and in jail perhaps you and I ought to sign up for the new Rollergirl stuff. Perhaps a whole team called The Menstruating She Devils? It seems a terrible thing to waste such a good descriptive on the Kos pie fights.
we should name it “she-devil pie!”
Anybody still up? For those of you who did not eat the lucky black eyed peas today … I ate enough for all of you.
We’ve got a shiny-new cafe, right over here!
