I promised Susan that I would root for the Seahawks today. And I will. But I still think of them as an AFC team and I miss their old uniforms.
Update [2006-1-14 14:46:36 by susanhu]: Thanks, Boo! We are SO excited … every business sign in town is cheering on the Hawks! If they win today, my next-door neighbor gets to go the game next week (and we’re a three-hour drive + ferry ride away)! (See, we in the Northwest haven’t felt like this since the Mariners’ ’95 playoff games….) Oh, and there were these pics in today’s two Seattle newspapers:
CAPTION: DeDe Schumaier, aka Mrs. Seahawk, starts painting her face at 4 a.m. for a 1 p.m. game against the St. Louis Rams. (January 13, 2006) (Seattle P.I.)
CAPTION: Patti Hammond, 75, aka “Mama Blue,” was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999 for her unwavering devotion to the Seahawks. Her Shoreline home is a temple to her favorite team, from blue-and-green carpet to a Seahawks comforter (Seattle Times)
I’ve been waiting ALL morning to post these! 🙂
And I was going to post a marvelous article from USA Today about Shaun Alexander, but that’d be too much, huh. But here’s a snippet of the story:
Good that the Seahawks are in the NFC now since I thanked StevenD yesterday for giving me a new team to root for (Broncos) because Jake (The Snake), the quarterback opposes the war in Iraq.
In the end though, I’m an NFC guy and I might just have to root for a real (sorry Susan and Steven) NFC team like the Bears (not sucking up to Aloha ;o)) because they thrive on defense. Defense wins championships and the Bears have it.
Sorry to be so contrary. But I’m still (silently) nursing my bruised psyche from last week’s monumental collapse by my beloved Giants.
In any case,
good luck to all teams and fans no matter how misguided their support ;o)
Bingo. A true Giants fan. NFC and Defense.
The Hawks? I need more time before I can consider then a NFC team. Jim Zorn did not play in the NFC. And Steve Largent is a loon.
Yeah, but he always caught ten balls for over 100 yds each and every time he played my Broncs. He was a great player, but a loony politician.
The trouble is, many athletes are GOP because of their tax bracket. Admittedly some are becaause they’re crazy.
Excuse me?
Chuck Knox was our first, and great, coach.
For years, our defense was our best attribute.
Steve Largent is a loon … but Dave Craig, his QB, was ignored despite being one of the best even though he came from a college that doesn’t even exist anymore, and playing no matter how bad his hangover was (plenty of people told me about Dave’s party nights).
Jim Zorn is a legend … a great QB when we had no team yet … and he’s a brilliant, unorthodox coach … who’s also a REAL mountain man.
East Coasters sure seem to have a lotta prejudice there and weird ideas about what constitutes real manhood and real football. Grrrrrrr.
You’re funny Susan ;o)
Who said anything about manhood?
Seahawks? Defense?
Come on ;o)
Listen, we’ve heard it all our lives …. you have NO idea of the deep resentment we on the West Coast have for you know-it-alls on the East Coast with your faux-grimy ideas of manhood.
I just erased an entire paragraph bashing the East Coast.
At least here, until you all move out here and spoil it, we have room to be and land where there’s still wilderness.
Have you ever looked at maps of the country’s national parks? See how many are left in the filthy, gritty East Coast?
well Chicago is west of Ohio.
But it is true that the AFC West is my least favorite division. Actually, that’s no longer true. Now my least favorite is the NFC South: Falcons, Bucs, Panthers, and Saints. Ick. And one of those teams is guaranteed to make the playoffs every year now. Does anyone like them?
Ouch Susan
Give me a sec while I grab a bandaid.
There you go again (thanks Ronny) with the manhood thing. It’s not my fault this country isn’t advanced enough to take advantage of it’s womanhood. Booman is ahead of the curve I think ;o)
As far as west coast teams go, it’s a fact they don’t focus on defense. It’s all run and gun (forgive me) mostly. The Chargers started that shit with the man Fouts. Fun to watch but how many championships do the Chargers have?
If I ever move to the North West (a dream of mine) you can rest assured that I’ll be tiptoeing through your wilderness with respect and admiration.
We’re buddies for life …
but I do get hot about the East Coast superiority bullshit …
‘sides, re the manhood thing, I’ve seen what a stud muffin you really are so I know you can handle it …
(and my hawks are doin’ alright — and isn’t it just the DAMNDEST THING that during the half-time the commentators kept talking about the SEAHAWK DEFENSE)
p.s.
Can I be your friend again please ;o)
Still thinking about it?
That’s cool. I’m patient ;o)
Very Patient
It’s halftime and I’m still patient ;o)
I won a trip to the United Nations when I was in high school, and went with a few kids from the Northwest and Western Canada … we all talked about the East Coast attitude. So when we met kids from NYC, we told them all kinds of stuff — they believed we still had cowboys and Indians — we told them that asparagus grows in trees, and laughed our asses off later after they believed us.
And that was only like 25 years ago … the East Coast culture is very insular, rather defensuively so, and — I’ve noticed — very out of touch with nature and wilderness and open spaces and clean air and quiet highways.
I’d better stop — I’m getting hot, and the game’s about to start! :):)
You stinker, Soling.
Um…
you forgot the SUPER part ;o)
I think there’s regional cultural differences between East Coast, Midwest, MidAtlantic, Border South, Deep South, Mountain, Southwest, Pac NW, NoCal, and SoCal. And Florida and Texas are whole ‘nother countries lol.
Chuck Knox was best known for his dedication to the running game: ‘ground Chuck’. That is a feature of all defense orientated coaches. But I have never met a Hawks teams with a reputation for meanness or whose defense scared anyone.
The great defenses: ’00 Ravens, ’86 Giants, and ’85 Bears are legendary, and those teams have remained philosophically dedicated to defense no matter who coaches them.
In fact, this years Giants team in the first I ever saw that could pass worth a damn.
Whatever … i don’t know that much about football. But, I do detect prejudice in that you don’t mention a single team west of Ohio or Pennsylvania …
Say, I’m trying to remember the name of a guy I used to help edit his college papers when he was still in the NFL — and he had two Superbowl rings from the Pittsburgh Steelers — Fred P___ — he was an offensive lineman. He retired ’round the mid-80s.
Da ’85 Bears…what can I say? A dream team for sure. That Defensive line, Monsters of the Midway!! I had every front page of the sports section of the Daily News on my livingroom wall. I even had a cap that said “If ya don’t love the Bears”…flip up visor “Fuck ya”. Mmmmmmm got into a little trouble with that one. When they won the Super Bowl I thought I would go bananas. We waited sooooooooo long for that and have been waiting 20 years again. GO BEARS!!
Yeah, Largent’s a loon now but man could that little dude get open.
I always find myself rootin for little guys like him (then, not now).
Santana Moss and Wayne Chrebet come to mind but you won’t find me EVER rooting for any team with a name like the f..eskins, oops I mean the R..skins
I’m stuck w/the damn Lions. I call them the Liars, for obvious reasons!
Susan I’ll be happy to root for your Seahawks. I remember many games between them and my Broncos in years past. We hated Steve Largent, but we also respected the heck out of him. They were a real loss to the AFC West when they went to the NFC.
Good luck.
We hated John Elway — I remember booing him, which I find embarrassing now — when we saw him play.
But, oh god could he throw the football … I watched him pass the ball down the field in one game in the early 90s, and on 4th down, he threw it right into the end zone. Even though it was Denver’s score, it was a beautiful thing to watch.
He was amazing. Broncos fans got very spoiled over the years. I’m just glad he went out the right way with some Super Bowl wins. I’ve always felt bad for Marino that he didn’t.
The Seahawk fans screamed “HORSE FACE!” at him. Isn’t that horrible.
I’m glad you got some Super Bowls … maybe, just maybe, our turn will come.
I hope so. There’s nothing like it for a city the first time it happens.
I live in Western NY now and I always feel bad for Buffalo Bills fans for the same reasons I used to feel sorry for myself. To come so close with your team and then to fail is heartbreaking.
Are you near Alfred College? My cousin Gene was provost until his death from leukemia.
Don’t know where Alfred is. There are a ton of small liberal arts schools here. Biggest major University is Syracuse.
I had to leave the bedroom TV to ask you: Is the Broncos QB a Mormon missionary?
(That’s what he looks like … just joking.)
No. He’s from Idaho. He’s sort of flaky. He’s the best we’ve had since Elway (which isn’t saying much).
Cheetahs Find Rare Refuge Amid Poverty Of Ethiopia
Whew.
Darcy’s not into football … she’s going to see “The Power of Nightmares” at the public library.
I asked her to find out how we can get a DVD of it …. I’m heart-sick that InfoClearingHouse.org had to remove their copies 🙁
Signing off the day to go watch football, and root for Susan’s Seahawks and my own Broncos. Let’s hope we still have teams in the playoffs tomorrow Susan.
Go ‘hawks! (And pass the pickled herring!!)
there is some pretty big hitting going on in this game.
They hurt our players. Not nice.
Say, it’s weird cuz I always really, really liked Mark Brunell … he lived near me when he was going to the Univ of Wash, and I’d see him walking to class all the time — well, hobbling along usually on crutches. He has BAD knees.
Me too, Steven … and I’ll root for the Broncos too. (I’ll never root for the Giants — ever!)
And we both won!!!!
Well, since I already read the comments and see that Susan did a great job defending the west coast, I wont step in it 🙂 True to my hometown, I am a Chargers fan first and foremost (but trust me Supersoling, when you meet me in March, you will still like me!).
That is so good to hear about Jake! I have a soft spot for the Broncos since they are representing the AFC West and since John Lynch is a hometown boy who went to high school around the corner from here. But for a soft spot this year, how can you not root for Tony Dungy?
Congrats Seattle!! I hope Shawn is OK for next weekend.
Congratulations to the Seahawks
Defense and all ;o)
