Ductape Fatwa is sharing important information at Eat 4 Today: What is Diabetic Neuropathy? (Warning – not for sensitive readers)
It really is quite graphic. But if you are a diabetic, or have a diabetic/pre-diabetic in your life, this is an article you shouldn’t miss.
(reposted from earlier today)
I am sorry to hear that Ductape has to suffer so much pain. He has a remarkable ability to keep an even keel, considering the kind of impulses he has to put up with.
It’s astonishing, he’s wise & funny & sympathetic & alert. I’m none of that when I’m on any drug, much less everything he’s dealing with.
to register, but the password didn’t come thru, nor did it wind up in the spam box.
I’ll reset it and send you an email
We can’t find a pattern in the password problem. But, we may have to ditch WordPress because of it.
I’m locked out myself & hoping to find Andi — if anyone sees her ask her to check her email.
(grrrr)
I read it, what a great piece. I’m not diabetic but this certainly inspires me to take the disease VERY seriously.
It’s fixed, check your email.
oh wait, you said impulses. I have low vision, I thought you said imperialists. ;>
Thank you for compliment, and kind words!
Wow. That’s very powerful writing. And I’m so sorry for Ducky’s pain. Thank god his brain is so powerful and his heart is so huge.
Also, Katie: I feel this easy bonding between our sites … the overlapping that’s a wonderful mesh because we all need a place where we don’t concentrate on politics, even beyond the cafe, and you provide a warm, safe spot for people to unload. That’s a huge gift to this community from you.
I appreciate that you let me promote articles like this. It’s very generous of you.
(I just wish I could get this password business settled)
I got my PWD right away, Katie. I just haven’t posted. Sorry to hear you’ve had troubles with others though … however, I noticed that you quickly sent me an e-mail once you saw I’d signed up, and you volunteered to help me if i needed it. Thanks for that.
BTW: Very irritating. I keep getting logged out of Daily Kos … really annoying when I’m clicking on a link in an e-mail to promote a friend’s diary, and I have to stop, find the login link, log in, and then try to find my friend’ s diary listed again.
I know what you mean. I don’t save passwords on some computers and I’m always irritated by it.
What a wonderful compliment! I will save this to remind people of it next time I bestow the gift of a new orifice on somebody up in here 😉
And what you said about kbird and her site. She is an inspiration to me, and many other people. I know she will save some lives.
(shaking my head)
Katiebird, my patients for the most part are diabetic and who have hypertension and heart disease. I am a dialysis nurse. Of course there are other reasons for dialysis, but I have to say most of mine are those with diabetes. Diabetics also suffer moderate to severe heart disease, and we all know where that leads to, as well. And of course with hight p/b we worry all the time about stokes. Many of my patients have already lost a limb, and some even loose a hand or an arm as well as a leg or part of a foot. Blindness is always a matter that has to be kept up on with that specialist. The problem with cutting the nails of a diabetic, one has to be very careful not to cause a wound, for it probably would not heal. So one can see many problems the diabetic can be subject to. For the most part they become impotent. I could go further but will not steal this diary for it is a good one too. Thanks to you and DTF for thsi is a serious disease that can and should be address for all Americans.
now if only I coud type without transposing letters..a nd I am slightly dyslexic too. That is hard for a person in my profession to have…:o)
..also the opposite of diabetes with high blood sugar, are those with hypoglycemia as a normal way of living. This is the opposite of diabeties. But with same results, for the most part.
BrendaStewart — I don’t want to hijack this thread either, but I’d love to talk more about almost everything you’ve mentioned.
Please stop by eat4today sometime. I’m working on an article about kidney complications running in families (like mine) maybe that would be a good time.
you bet Katiebird…I went there from your link and saw what DTF wrote. When would be a good time for you?
I’ll put something up around noon tomorrow, but you could stop by anytime after that. I’ll be monitoring things.
ok. If I am not called in to work, I will be there…
Brenda, I’ll see you then! And if you get called in to work — we’ll be there for a long time, we’ll see you when it works out.
article, your knowledge and experience as a nurse would be extremely helpful to people with everything from simple obesity to high bp to lupus to the big D, high cholesterol, all the fun and exciting diseases you get to visit backstage with up close and personal!
sssshhhh, you’ll scare her away completely. Now she’ll “say” she has to go to work tomorrow!
nah..I love nursing and would do anything to help us all stay as healthy as possible. :o) I love you folks here…
I love the folks here too, they’re the best!
You bet DTF, I will give that some thought and try to go to eat4today and do this for you all. Life is not perfect in so many ways. There are so may reasons for things to occur for humans. I can only touch on the top level of those, for it would take away from the speciality of each dr. to be known for the day in which we live..:o)
That would be fantastic Brenda — thank you!
complications, thank all applicable deities, neuropathy is the only one I have, and so that is the one I wrote about. But all the ones you list are just as awful, and just as much of a danger for people who do not control their diabetes.
And I will repeat something I said in a comment on the E4T thread: If you do not have diabetes, or a loved one with diabetes, you will.
I know DTF. Anfr for what you discribe, I know you must be in constant pain. You have my wholehearted praise for dealing with it the best that you can. Lots of hugs, and God bless…I pray for your relief in some way that you will not have bad days and nights.
drugs really help, and the increased drugs are helping even more (I see the white turbines, Mr. Technocrat!) and hopefully once the shugga is controlled, I will be able to do away with the drugs 🙂
That hope, and of course the thought of Gooserock’s mackerel chili, stop me when I have an urge to reach for the chocolate covered cherries 😀
neuropathy has many roots of cause too. Did you know that too? Anyone who smokes may suffer from that too. Anyone who has high blood pressure will have this as well and heart disease. Hi cholesterol and fat in the serum blood can cause this symdrome as well, but then you look at it like this and you can see where diabetes is the root cause that may becoming the causitive of the symptom.
It seems that the first thing they do when people come in with burning feet is rule out diabetes, if they can. But in my case, and I understand in many, diabetes is immediately and loudly ruled in!
I originally went to the Dr. because I feel like a rubber band is always wrapped around my big toe. And I wondered if it meant diabetes. Which I had. But the big toe thing seems to be unrelated (although still undiagnosed). So that’s weird.
It sounds like a mild or early stage of neuropathy, that is weird if they have not suspected that.
Gout?
Brenda, what have you heard about restless leg syndrome? I have that, and it took me a long time to realize that it was a physical problem, so I looked it up on the Internet — trying to find the right words to use in the search — and discovered it had a name (!), and that lots of people suffer from it too (!).
Anyway, I am curious if it could be related to neuropathy.
I see there’s a new drug being advertised on TV for RLS.
Oddly enough, I’ve kind of solved it on my own. I am a hopeless insomniac and for years, I was taking Tylenol PM to help me go to sleep … when my doctor gave me a prescription for Ambien back in 2002, and I stopped taking Tylenol PM, the RLS almost went away. I still have it, but it’s mild and the Ambien takes over and I’m out. (I still wake up every hour or so from knee or hip pain, but I can go back to sleep.)
Susan I hope you don’t mind me jumping in, but I have the same thing. The medicine you see advertised on TV is what my Dr. gave me. I haven’ had any side effects and no RLS. Also with the insomnia I was prescribed Ambien. My only problem with that was it wouldn’t keep me asleep and I would wake up and not remember talking to anyone, going to the kitchen and so on. It really scared me because I got to thinking one night would I get up and get in the car and go somewhere. So, I stopped taking that.
After watching them dispose of the Broncos, I’ll have to go with the
It could be a very long day for the Seahawks.
Peace
don’t let Susan see that prediction.
Can’t we let Susan fantasize for at least 6 more days? Can’t we wait for the BIG QUESTION until then?
( I know … i’ve heard the predictions … and it is their first time to the big one / hell, the first time in the NFC championship game. What they have going for them can’t be calculated though: They really have team spirit. Corny, but damn true.)
People are nutso around here … I see Seahawk bumperstickers and sweatshirts everywhere … store signs are all rooting for the Hawks … it’s really cute.
It’s never happened to the entire Northwest before. That’s a big deal.
I’ll have to catch the HBO football show and see what they have to say. They’re kind of funny on that show anyway.
Or, will the Steelers have an advantage if we get hit w/a blizzard? (Don’t know much about the climate in the Pacific NW)
The Seahawks can and should take pride in getting there, they’ve had a spectacular season.
But, the championship game was the first game I’ve been to in 10 yrs…and the Donkies were out coached, out played and completely humiliated.
If “S” bring their game, it’s over. I was thoroughly impressed.
Peace
Well, I’m tempted to say that after watching the Seahawks completely neutralize Steve Smith, the Steelers have their work cut out for them.
But then I haven’t seen the Steelers play, so I have no idea what they’re up against. Presumably, Mike Holgren has at least been watching the tapes.
My un-expert analysis, from a guy who really didn’t pay much attention to the whole thing until I watched the Hawks beat the Colts, is: Whoever brings the best defense will win. I think the Hawks really did win by keeping Smith’s hands off the ball — he was supposed to be this massive juggernaut, and he had one significant play during the entire first half. Granted it scored a touchdown, but it was the Panthers’ only touchdown that half, and their second one came with about 5 minutes left in the game when the Hawks were comfortably ahead by 27 points.
I will say this for the Steelers: Any team with three playoff wins on the road has already done something mighty impressive.
I have my AFC loyalties warring with my West Coast loyalties. And on the one hand, the Steelers used the Chargers gameplan to beat the Colts (since the Chargers didn’t advance, I look up that game where they whupped the “undefeated” Colts and that nasty man Peyton Manning as my consolation prize), and Ben Roethlesberger (however you spell it) is kinda cute. On the other, I’ve always liked the Seahawks uniforms, and Hasselbeck’s not bad looking either.
I’m going to root for it to be a good, entertaining football game. But I always have a little extra love for the underdog…
My wife, who is massively indifferent to sports, thinks the Seahawks have a very cool logo. I have to agree.
Why the Seahawks will definitely win the Super Bowl. How can there be any doubt??
GO HAWKS!!
Note the signature. From the wisest man to ever walk the planet, at least in the Northwest.
I’m rooting for the Seahawks because they are the presumed underdog, and because I want to celebrate the grassroots fever that is stirring up so much enthusiasm for them.
I would feel similarly toward the Democratic Party if they too were inspiring such grassroots devotion, but, alas, they are not.
But don’t write off the dems completely yet. They’ve begun drifting in the peoples’ direction the last few days. Two have flip-flopped in our favor. Take a few minutes and fax some of them. Voicemail boxes are full, we’re finding.
I’m not writing them off. I’ve done all the emailing and what phonecalling I’m able to afford. I’ve been sending communications to my Senators and congressmen on various issues constantly since I returned from the dead back in 2004. I even voted for Kerry as an expression of trying to stop the greater of 2 evils.
No, I’m not writing them off. I’m just saying that they’re not inspiring, and because they’re not inspiring I have less reason to put my trust in them or to believe that anything like real principle will motivate them to stand up for the things they claim to believe in.
That’s all. I’ll applaud everyone who does stand up, but I’ll be applauding their personal integrity, not some vague notion of Democratic Party idealism that is not defended by the majority of it’s elected members.
I think the common wisdom says Steelers. I think it will be a close game. Probably decided on a turnover late in the game. Just a gut feeling, but I think Seahawks will pull out the upset. Personally, it doesn’t matter to me. I hope it is competitive for four quarters.
I agree with you. While of course I want the Steelers to win, I would hate to see a blowout for either side. The best tournament games are the ones that are in doubt right up to the end. The main reason I think the 1995 Mariners’ win over the Yankees in the American League Division Series was one of the most exciting ever in sports — certainly the most exciting ever in Seattle — is that the Mariners came back from an 0-2 deficit to tie up the series with two road wins, then went from being behind to tie up the fifth and deciding game, and then went from being behind by a run in the 11th and facing one of the most feared closers in baseball to win the game and the series. And this after coming from a 13 1/2 game in late August to win the American League West in a one-game playoff.
This Super Bowl is pretty great, but that was just amazing.
Gaaah, I must be tired. That or I’m having flashbacks to the summer I spent in far eastern Ohio (Steubenville, right across the river from Weirton and about 50 miles or so from Pittsburgh). I bought a Steelers stocking cap that summer. I still have it. It is going to remain safely hidden in my drawer until well after the Super Bowl.
Just sent to me by my next-door neighbor … who, by the way, is a Seahawks fan and a very scary man … so I’m sendin’ him here for reinforcements.
IT IS WORSE THAN WE EVER IMAGINED.
>At New York’s Kennedy airport today, an individual, later discovered to be a public school teacher, was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide rule, and a calculator.
>At a morning press conference, Attorney general Gonzolez said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.
>Al-gebra is a fearsome cult,” Ashcroft said. “They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like ‘x’ and ‘y’ and refer to themselves as ‘unknowns’, but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, ‘there are 3 sides to every triangle’.”
>When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes”
I’m so excited … DISH just added the DOC channel!
http://www.documentarychannel.com/
KEWLLLLLLLL … Nerd heaven.
I laid down for a few minutes this afternoon, flipped channels. There was Tim Russert’s show on CNBC, so I listened to them discuss torture.
I listened to macho tough-guy Fred Barnes say that, in HIS opinion, waterboarding IS NOT TORTURE.
We think we can’t be shocked, but these people will say anything to be a part of this macho shit! Look at Tweetie’s groveling! It’s pathetic!
Don’t they know that the really macho men and women walk softly?
If it’s not torture I wonder if he would like to have it demonstrated on him on live national TV. The thought of it makes my skin crawl.
Hmmm…why don’t we test Mr. Barnes’ theory by waterboarding him?
Seahawks, the Steelers suck (according to Cabin the Younger and his less than fabulous vocabulary tonite).
Troublemaker. 🙂
I just hope it’s a good close game — blowouts suck.
Oh, and I just remembered I want to go to the cemetary tomorrow; next Tuesday marks the first anniversary of Mom’s passing, and I want to take flowers…hope I can squeeze that in with all the other crap that needs to get done around here.
And there evidently are a few folks still worried about our “image” with the MSM, complaining about the word “fucking” in the “What’s Your Fucking Problem” diary over at Orange Empire. Let’s see…you’ve got Ann Coulter joking about rat poison, Pat Robertson calling for “God’s judgement” on folks he disagrees with, and an administration that’s breaking the law and proud of it…and we’re worried about “fucking”? Fuck, if it’s good enough for the fucking Vice President, it’s fucking good enough for me…
Repeat after me: Just because Republicans do it is no reason for us to emulate them.
I have my own views on profanity. I think that in general it should be eschewed, as it is almost always possible to make one’s point without it, and avoid unnecessary offense. However, I have also said that it’s like using a spice in your cooking. Use it in the right dish, in the right way, in the right amount at the right time, and it can really make the dish work. Dumping it indiscriminately into everything you cook, however, makes the meal inedible.
And never, ever, would I say you or anyone else cannot use it. I do believe in the First Amendment. I also believe in using it responsibly.
Just sayin’, y’know.
