That 4 looks good on you
And I pledge to always order from the Powells.com link from here from now on. Of course, I already had a stack of 10 unread books behind me, of a very eccletic variety… But I am a reader at heart, this damn computer thing just keeps me from doing it more. That said, I did read Brokeback Mountain yesterday in one sitting, well, in one lying… I was in the bath. It’s a short story, but the first I actually finished in awhile so there is hope for me yet!
my diary is just below the new Cafe in the recent list…maybe it’ll attract a few eyeballs…
Already read and rec’d π
Nice diary. Highly recommended.
I bet you didn’t think I had it in me to come up with a landlocked country view! That is, if Imageshack is letting you see it.
Our first few years in the Sound, we lived on a rural hilltop with farms all around like the one to the left of this roadway. Today as in this view, the deciduous trees–mainly alders around us–are showing buds that first became noticeable soon after New Year’s.
Wow. I’m just stunned.
The lines of this picture are wonderful — they grab your eyes and pull you right in.
Yes, it’s like an entire novel.
While I generally don’t do much in my life with visuals, that kind of storytelling landscape does seem to catch my eye. I’m into this in a very big way with my music. When we played in a Celtic stage band years ago I liked to encourage us to build the individual medlies as well as laying out the entire concert in storytelling fashion, not just linear towards a big climax, but with rises and falls and unexpected turns and diversions.
The Gaels share that sensibility. More than a few times Scots and Irish immigrants told us that one reason they like X accordion player or Y ceili band was because the medlies were interesting and would perk your ears up as you danced along through the patterns.
Here’s what I consider the finest storytelling picture I ever took. It’s a 9:30PM summer’s evening in the western Scottish Highlands, from our honeymoon over 20 years ago. We were riding with a suburban Glasgow family we’d been pointed to for a first day’s stay and orientation. The car came around a hilltop bend, I saw this and urgently exclaimed “stop the car.” I leaned against the car and snapped one shot. What a privilege!
The colors have drifted somehow a little too yellow and not quite blue enough.
But a framed 30″ wide print of this has been our main livingroom decoration as long as we’ve been married. I can still lose 10 minutes in it any time.
It’s gorgeous.
Fantastic photo. Wonderful colors and perspective. You really should get yourself over to the olympics so you can treat us all to more “land” shots.
I love pictures with zig-zag geometry.
Good After Morning, everyone!
Goose. . .I love this picture! Lots of layers of interest and it speaks volumes to me. I always love your pics, and all of the rest of you froggy photogs too. One of the things that makes the cafe so inviting.
I am temporarily touching earth, so thought I would offer a long over due greeting to all of you. Rumor has it that Diane has been talking about my agedness…..Heh!
She is a fine one to talk. . .if I live to be 100 I’ll never be as old as she is!! She’s just jealous because she’s not the eldest any more, and neither am I. . .
Apparently there is something about being “old” that Diane enjoys, so we will let her have at it. Frankly I’m much younger now than I was in my late 40’s. To each their own. . .LOL!
Hope everyone is doing well and I do stop by and read very often although I don’t always comment. Can’t wait to see you all, all that can make it, at the Meet Up at the end of March.
I think we will just do the T-shirts on Cafe Press as we don’t seem to have more than 15 who want them.
Preview for any that missed the pic:
Anyone can order one, you don’t have to be going to the Meet up to get one. We are not looking to make any money on these, just cover the cost of them. I will put up a diary in a day or two inviting everyone that wants one to order, and give links to the order site.
Love ya all,
Big, Big Hugs
Shirl
Great picture. Is the Picture recent? If so, it should be shown nationally to put an end to the “what global warming?” nonsense, eh? Looks like it should have been taken about May 4th in Southern Michigan.
I heard about a British artist who has the same name as mine, and when I visited her website just now I liked her work. She lives and “arts” in a place called “The Old Sunday School” where there are there are “also three beautiful guest rooms for overnight visits.” (Is West Cornwall charming? I’ve never been there.)
So I emailed her! I just couldn’t resist the idea of writing a note to myself. I wonder if I’ll hear back, or if she’ll decide that one of herself is enough.
If you want to see “my” art work and jewelry, here’s her site: LINK:
Cool! A lovely site. I’d love to visit her.
I once googled my name and found a purebred dog and her puppies. I can’t remember the breed.
I’m the only person in at least a hundred years with my name. If you google it, it’s just me and marriage records from 1-2 hundred years ago.
not quite sure how one orders a drink in an unhosted…. but I’ll try serving myself. today’s drink:
2 parts Black Sambuca
1 part vodka
swish around, and beware the ice floes.
I’m mixing up a batch if anyone’s interested…. hmmm…..
Suskind, sweetie! Can you make me one, while you’re making yours?
Make it three.
You here in the good ol’ US(SR) now?
Peace
Here you go, kids.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION !!
No, haven’t got the passport straightened out yet… should be this Thursday coming. Want to send my files on CD’s by the post…. will they get scrambled or magnitized? How do you send massive files from one continent to the other?
Just fyi, suskind: I’ve gotten plenty of CDs (home-made music, info files) by post both domestically & from across the pond. They’re always fine.
All I want is a room somewhere
Far away from the cold night air
With one enormous chair
Oh wouldn’t it be luverly?
Lots of files for me to read
Run google searches at superspeed
And check BooTrib
For today’s big lead
Oh wouldn’t it be luverly?
Oh, so loverly sittin’ abso-bloomin’-lutely still!
I would never budge ’til Spring crept over my window sill.
Some great book restin’ on my knee; Sinclair Lewis or old HG,
That takes good care of me; Oh wouldn’t it be loverly?
Loverly, loverly, loverly, loverly.
Another Road…two lane back road from T-day road trip:
some where in N.Central KS.
Memorable because of an encounter w/ the KSP…speeding?,,yer kidding me…didn’t work. :{)
Peace
Nice light. I wonder if I’ve ever been there? Who could tell?
US 36 about 1.5 hrs. west of US 81…nice drive, very little traffic but you really have to watch the side roads…for many reasons…
Peace
I found a map — it seems like your photo isn’t too far from where I took this photo. But, I’m going to have to retrace my drive to find the exact location of this:
I love the way that the edge of the road and the pipeline lead into the picture.
I want to bicycle on that road.
It would be a great road bike ride…rolling hills- bust uphill…cruise the downside…bust up the next…very few trucks or cars…only problem No shoulders.
Peace
Hey, all — greetings from the wet, rainy Catskills. No doubt mild temperatures & snow melt along with rain will cause a bit of regional flooding into tomorrow.
Thankfully, I’ve got nothing to do but attend to long-overdue ‘home work’. Any minute now.
Note to DJ: so glad to see you (as I peeked past the ‘closed’ sign at the last cafe’). You’ve been in my thoughts. I second (or third) the request for a diary on your experiences!
Can’t help but remember of the arrest of anti-war activists at Hil’s NY office just before the Iraq war vote. I s’pose this is known as ‘distancing’.
Can’t see any images today — bummer! Apparently I need to do some work on system memory.
& so, cheerio!
Thanks WW π
I have a very “basic” diary up.
Cool! Will go see
Good afternoon frog people ;o)
I’m a little bummed today because plans that I had been looking forward to (an understatement) for som e time now fell through at the last minute because of transportation problems. What’s worse is I let another down in the process. Here’s hoping for second chances </fingers crossed>.
I’ve been thinking about Brinnainne a lot lately since she hasn’t been around. I emailed her a couple of weeks ago but haven’t heard back. Has anyone seen hide or hair of her? If so is she well and how is she coming through her financial rearrangements?
She is one of those that I feel closest to here and I’ve missed her straightforward voice and opinions.
Peace
She popped up here in the cafe a week or so ago. There may have been only one comment.
I hope you get that second chance. π
Are you still able to get into Eat 4 Today? I can’t get in at all now.
Getting right in. It’s not right that you can’t!
When in doubt, reboot.
I shut down for about a 1/2 hour. and deleted cookies, cache & history. I can’t get in at all. I can get into the server to update files. But not the site.
Oh, well — off to Starbucks!
I had Jim try and he didn’t have any problems either.
Is there a lookup behavior for loading files that would make the server try to load a file for you that wouldn’t be in the lookup behavior for the rest of us?
Thanks Kansas.
I thought maybe she was gone altogether. Even one comment is evidence that she’s not.
Thanks too for the good wishes.
Someone in the outback of Idaho as been feeling a gap in your presence, Michael.
Glad to see you are out and about . . .sitting up and taking nourishment, as it were.
Always hate it when something screws up plans, especially when they are plans with such potential wonderfulness. It will all work out, trust me, I know stuff.
Love ya big guy,
Shirl
Your talent for appearing at the exact moment that I need you most is still so amusing and welcome.
I’m here. I’m just quiet this week. I am encouraged though by the push being made by the blogs to get Alito filiobustered. It’s good to flex muscles sometimes.
I love you too Shirl,
yes
Did I skeeer you??
Was thinking about you and so many others Friday while looking like a drowned puddy tat.
I got to thinking of DC, you and Leezy in Crawford.. and then a smile overtook me and I was thinking of you, Tracy, BroFeldspar and Damnit Ryan all hot and sweaty from the freedom death march.
Flexing muscles… got that peace tattoo yet? I have to sell the house and lose this weight and I’m like so getting one.
Was good to come home friday night and see my husband up with the kids – all smiles. They had the phone and cell right on the couch. π
And.. I had you guys with me too. You do know that right?
No matter where I go -there you guys are.
Transportation probs? Hope things work out – they usually do.
Naw…
you don’t skeer me. Unless you’re up on my roof twisting my antenna around and shape shifting the clouds without me ;o)
I carry you and Leezy and Tracy wherever I go. Even when my protest is a thought protest. I envision all of us together, side by side, charging the metaphorical gate.
For me these are lifetime bonds of common dreams and purpose. Of needing to protect our children and each others children.
So yes, when the feelings of resistance stir within, I’m never alone ;o)
It might come to “charging the gate”… I want to be there when that needs to be done.
I have no doubt that we’ll see each other again. And again And Again! π When you stand up, you get to see things a bit clearer and you see all the other people who are also standing up. Never alone.
But… I do miss you guys! π
I’ve a hunch you’ll get your second chance. Seeing as you’re such a good egg and all, at least from my bumpings-into-you around here. So go forth and be positive, dammit! π
Wow, seems like this was the weekend for people’s plans falling apart…shermanesque had that happen to her too. I hope you get your transport problems squared away soon.
Like someone else already said, I saw Brinn commenting in a cafe recently. Maybe she’ll appear now that you’ve asked. π
Psssttt… There is no ‘u’ in shermanesqe. As much as we were all brought up to believe that every ‘q’ must be followed by a ‘u’, I am just not one for conventions these days. Tee-hee. And it can be problematic in the email department too sometimes. Just a heads up sweetie. I’ve some faxing to do now! π
Shoot, I had it spelled the right way at first, and then “fixed” it…oh well…
I have some of my own faxing I need to go do too.
I’m pooped. All the christmas crap is put away, my dining room is clean, my laundry is done and 1/2 of my basement is organized. The other 1/2 will have to wait for next week. Oh and I’ve faxed everybody. That SOB Kit Bond’s fax machines aren’t answering — he probably intentionally left them with no paper. But Talent’s went through and he’s the weaker of the two.
I’m gonna go trap me a woodchuck and put him in the still.
Go get ’em Mary! Press him extra hard for me. Grrrr!
You making hooch, Mary? π
I left out the christmas wrapping paper and Kitty “took care of it” for me. She completely went ballistic on it and shredded it all. Two whole (well, mostly whole) rolls. She made it easy to clean it up π
He wouldn’t hold still for me to put him in the press. But I pretended he was a Republican and before you know it he was still and pressed.
mmmmmm
My Christmas cards from this year around going to be framing my back deck door all year long. I just love seeing them there and can’t bear to take them down. π
That sounds cheerful. There’s something about christmas cards in June and July that is more cheering even than in December.
K…done faxing everybody and their left-handed dog for the day…if you haven’t done it, or if you have, go HERE for the appropriate FAX #’s and do it today and again tomorrow.
Now there’s a couple
and a big, greasy, green chile enchilada with my name on it waiting for me at the “Rio”.
Later yawl
Peace
love the green chili!!!
