Update [2006-1-31 17:50:2 by susanhu]: The almost always dignified Other Lisa‘s on a roll today. She’s said FUCK twice already! In this e-mail, “Oh, fuck me.” … And she sends a link to “Bush to Say ‘America Addicted to Oil’.” — “ President Bush, pushing to take charge of the election-year agenda, said Tuesday that ‘America is addicted to oil’ and must break its dependence on foreign suppliers in unstable parts of the world.” (Susan holds head in hands, rocks back and forth in fetal position.)
Gore Vidal Delivers State of the Union: “Let the Powers That Be Know There is Something Called We the People of the U.S. and all Sovereignty Rests in Us.”
— Listen/watch/read at Democracy Now! A snippet:
I had a piece on the internet some of you may have seen a few days ago (Update [2006-1-31 17:32:25 by susanhu]:: It’s “President Jonah“; thanks to Wilderness Wench for the link) , and there’s a story about Tiberius, who’s one of my favorite Roman emperors. He’s had a very bad press, because the wrong people perhaps have written history. But when he became emperor, the Senate of Rome sent him congratulations with the comment, “Any law that you want us to pass, we shall do so automatically.” And he sent a message back. He said, “This is outrageous! Suppose I go mad. Suppose I don’t know what I’m doing. Suppose I’m dead and somebody is pretending to be me. Never do that! Never accept something like preemptive war,” which luckily the Senate did not propose preemptive wars against places they didn’t like. But Mr. Bush has done that.
So this is a sort of Tiberius time without, basically, a good emperor, and he was a good emperor in the sense that he sent back this legislation, which was to confirm anything he wanted to have done automatically. And they sent it back to him again. And then he said, “How eager you are to be slaves,” and washed his hands of the Senate and went to live in Capri, a much wiser choice, just as we can send this kid back to Crawford, Texas, where he’ll be very, very happy cutting bushes of the leafy variety. […]
… let the powers that be know that back of them, there’s something called “We the people of the United States,” and all sovereignty rests in us, not in the board rooms of the Republicans. … Listen/watch/read all.
Wes Clark Delivers The Real State of the Union:
— Read all at WesPAC: Securing America A snippet:
Enough is enough! Forward an email to the White House today — tell President Bush that the American people demand better leadership to get our nation back on track. …
[O]ur nation is in trouble, veering from its heritage, and sliding into a dangerous future.
[F]our years after 9/11, Osama Bin Laden remains on the loose in the vastness of western Pakistan, and Al Qaeda remains a potent force among millions of Muslims.
[D]espite our tough talk, Iran is discarding its international obligations in the apparent pursuit of nuclear weaponry.
North Korea, with a standing army of more than 1 million men, armed with chemical and biological weapons as well as long-range missiles, is defying US efforts to contain its threat of nuclear proliferation.
[W]e are in danger of losing the very principles we are fighting for as revelations of torture and degrading treatment of those detained confound our long standing commitment to human rights.
[R]ising global competitors like China are taking advantage of the security umbrella we have created to lock in their own access to the resources needed to fuel their stupendous growth.
[T]he United States has stood silently while the historic opportunity of a democratic Russia is systematically crushed

What’s your SOTU?
I got the Wes Clark email earlier this morning and already sent out my email to the WhiteWash House
It’s a hell of a speech that should be read in full!
I hate sending mail to Dubya — because I just want to swear and rant — but I did it.
I could see a Feingold (or other) / Wes Clark ticket in ’08.
Optimistically: my SOTU is a state of growing awareness.
Regardless of the obviously apparent, I don’t believe we can deny our SOGA either. We’ve come very, very far from the day’s of Bush’s 80% approval ratings, an entirley cowed legislature & a higher ‘moral ground’ — or, state of illusion.
My tendency today is to believe that with continued learning, the continued growth of vital media & our continued participation in civil duty to the best of our individual abilities, this state of awareness will grow.
FYI: the piece Vidal refers to is another terrific read.
An excerpt, quoting sociologist Morris Berman:
If, as Benjamin Franklin said, the destiny of America is ‘not in power, but in light’, I’d suggest we all do our very best to keep shining.
Good evening,
Our government is getting away with things that are fundamentally anti-American. They have implemented destructive foreign, economic, and social policies while the general populace remains blissfully unaware or uncaring.
This is happening because of two major factors.
Demand truth. Demand honesty. Demand justice, and fairness.
It is your country, and it is time change it for the better. Furthermore, it cannot be changed without you. Be aware. Get educated. Get involved. You are the engine that will make this country move towards greatness.
Thank you and good night.
This is very powerful.
If I heard you delivering that tonight, I’d be standing on my bed applauding you on my teevee set. Really.
Next to you, I like Ed J’s protest idea best.
Thanks Susan. Unfortunately, I don’t think I have the public speaking skills necessary to be Presi…oh, wait. 🙂
I agree, I love the Dem protest idea. I’d even like it more if they went in for the beginning, and then timed their departure with one of the big ‘applause’ moments.

“But I will not let myself be reduced to silence.”
▼ ▼ ▼ MY DIARY
considering that Democrats have been banned from the governmental process, I’d give them the balls to boycott the speech.
What a glorious visual that would be. At Bush’s applause lines the camera would show half the chamber in a standing ovation and empty chairs on the other side.
But alas, the docile, timorous Democrats will show up and politely applaud the bastard who’s putting the Constitution through a fucking paper shredder.
It would blow everyone’s minds.
‘course Tweetie and Milbank would be slobbering all over themselves making fun. But so be it.
I love it, Ed!
Sure it would be great Ed but what makes you think the MSM would even show it? They would keep the cameras on the right!
What union?
Seriously though, our union is in grave danger. Our world is rapidly changing while the most venal of human instincts are not.
There are choices to be made by all citizens. Will we be passive? Will we despair? Or will we answer the challenges of the time which call for compassion, strength and above all creativity.
The state of our union is our responsibility and demands that we learn from the past while employing our intelligence and passion to create a new future.
There are people “in power” who wish, above all to keep and expand their power. But there are also people “with power” who are now called upon to use all of their ingenuity, grace and tenacity to bring forth a more perfect union. Patriots, in the final analysis, the union is what we choose to make it.
Grrr!!!! Arrrr!!!!!
😉
When is Jon Stewart on tonight? Before or after the SOTU?
Wouldn’t that be great! a little screen on the right, similar to a sign language screen, with Jon Stewart mocking GWB.
NEXT BEST THING: Sam Seder is hosting a live forum, with guest pundits, tonight before, during, and after the SOTU … they’re going to have live commentary on Bush as he speaks … Sam even said that hopefully, they’ll be talking so much that you won’t even be able to hear Bush!
Air America Radio — after 4pm
what time is the SOTU anyway?
It is at 9pm eastern.
I love Gore Vidal. Thanks for the tip.
He had some good ideas on how to save the USA even before Bush/Cheney the Destroyers stole the presidency. He felt that the USA was too big to govern so it should be broken up into geographic regions. (Geography and weather always win in the end.) He dares to think original thoughts.
Omir and I are ready to join up with British Columbia,
Will you have us?
My friends in California — like Other Lisa — would like to come too.
Thing is, I think Bush’ll bomb us into oblivion if we try it! Seattle’ll be 100 feet underground from those nuclear bunker busters he’ll unleash! That’s secession! That’s civil war, he’ll declare!
But, god, it’s what we want. I wish we could have a friendly divorce.
All liberals are welcome! We still have room. Just ask the deer and the buffalo to move over.
Pacifica! Our Pacifica!
We grow the food! We make the movies! We have the best wine! And beer!
Yeah!
And if the wingers east of the Cascades don’t like it, we’ll just slice them off! 🙂
(Maybe some of eastern California too?)

Congressman Dennis Kucinich: Our Union In A State Of Great Peril
Georgia Stillwell | Veteran’s Mother’s State of Our Family Address
George Bush is going to give us his state of the union, well this is the state of my family. People say to me he volunteered, he knew what he was getting into. My son was still a teenager, he had no idea what he was getting into. Can anyone really comprehend war unless they’ve been there? The war has come home … it is coming home with each soldier. My son’s body survived Iraq … nothing else.
Not that I read all of the above, there may be some in there. But in relation to the SOTU and also the alito thing, just for today (and tomorrow) it’s my belief that what we don’t want is angst and lots of public and earnest soul searching… we need lots of good mockery. We need to take their victory from them.
We fought the good fight, but republicans have been suckered, big time, by the entire Bush presidency and by the Alito nomination. What’s in Bush’s speech tonight (besides the regular pablum?). Big government, nanny state proposals which of course are not to the advantage of the little guy, but of the business corps. Look what this does to them: (From RedState, no link, cuz I don’t want them to change it, lol)
We can work with that… rub it in, salt the wounds, etc, etc.
Also on the national review site, (the corner) they are saying that it looks like Blunt, or whatever his name is, has the the momentum in their leadership race… thats the guy thats well known as being just as corrupt as Delay. Plenty of snark material there… suckered again.
Anyway, I am so not snarky, but I think some who are (or even who are not) should make sure that we are laughing at them… not the other way around.
Plenty of time for the rest (flagellating the dems, wondering what we stand for and all that) later.

“Gore believes that if we apply some American ingenuity, the twin engines of democracy and capitalism can be rigged to help us stabilize world population growth, spread social justice, boost education levels, create environmentally appropriate technologies, and negotiate international agreements to bring us back from the brink. For example, a worldwide shift to clean, renewable energy sources would create huge economic opportunities for companies large and small to design, build, and maintain solar panels, wind turbines, fuel cells, and other ecofriendly innovations.”
“We simply are seeking to bring into full realization the American dream–a dream yet unfulfilled. A dream of equality, of opportunity, of privliege, and property widely distributed; a dream of a land where men no longer argue that the color of a man’s skin determines the content of his character; the dream of a land where everyone will respect the dignity and worth of the human personality–this is the dream. When it is realized, the jangling discords of our nation will be transformed into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood, and men everywhere will know that America is truly the land of the free and home of the brave….”Martin Luther King(July,1962)….”With this faith, sisters and brothers, let us work together with renewed passion and commitment to create the beloved community of Martin Luther King, Jr.s dream, where all people can live together in a spirit of trust and understanding”Coretta Scott King(Nov.9,2000)(posted at Pam’s House Blend today…1/31/06
