USGS says it was a 3.6. Map and list of recent Washington quakes here. Funny what you get used to. Around here (SF Bay area) a 3.6 wouldn’t cause much excitement or consternation — but we were all carrying umbrellas today to protect ourselves against a pathetic little drizzle.
I grew up near your town, maryb2004, and I remember a couple of tremors when I was a kid. Must’ve been on the New Madrid Fault. They were plenty disconcerting at the time, even though they didn’t damage anything at all. There hasn’t been a really BIG one there since the 1830s.
we get a few shakes from time to time — feels like someone is moving furniture on the floor above you. But in general we’re more afraid of tornados. For which we usually get a little bit of warning.
What you need on the west coast is a cracking good thunder storm to really freak everybody out. A little drizzle never melted anybody.
One of my sisters lived in Salem Oregon for a while and one morning there was an actual thunderstorm. She hadn’t been there long enough to know that this was unusual and being a girl from the midwest she was kind of enjoying it. She had a couple of meetings in the morning and so she arrived at the office late morning right at the height of the storm to find all of her co workers totally freaked out and wondering why she had been driving in a thunder storm much less running across the parking lot. She said she had the hardest time not laughing out loud.
sandy bluff with some sizeable spruce trees on it.
Between rain, the growing frequency of slides in the region, and this, noises like this little quakelet are more attention-getting for us than magnitude alone would suggest.
and waves are allowed to do some pretty weird things. If you look at the stats page at the UW, they have lots and lots of reports from Seattle, some from Anacortes, and one from as far as Olympia (presuming it’s not a psychosomatic quake!). The correlation of distance to perceived magnitude is imperfect.
I’ve had lightning strike yards from me and it isn’t nearly as loud as it is a few hundred yards off.
I came this close to falling asleep during survivor! In fact I fell asleep just as the vote started. Woke up in time to see the farewell speech and then passed out again.
Just home from an afternoon/evening out. Spent the afternoon helping mom-in-law with computer stuff; she’s going to call the optometrist and see if she can get new glasses to use with the computer. Then when the spouse got off work, we all went to see dad-in-law in the hospital — he looks awesome for someone recovering from back surgery! He’s eager to come home though; current word is that he’ll get released Saturday morning — the spouse and I will go pick him up, then we’re going to cook a “welcome home” meal over at their place. (Got to plan my menu…) Still unsure whether they’re going to need me to stay over or not; he’s doing well enough that mom-in-law thinks I might not be needed, but we’ll see what they learn from the doctor tomorrow…
That’s great news. I’m so glad he’s doing welll — but don’t let him do too much. And don’t let your mother in law do to much. People underestimate how much work it is to take care of someone recovering from serious surgery.
having been through things with my mom after her bypass surgery.
Fortunately their younger son still lives with them, though I’m not sure how much he’ll be willing to do; he is bipolar with mild schizophrenia — well controlled with medication but one can’t predict what kind of mood he’ll be in on a specific day. Plus, they’ve received some offers of help from friends at their church; one woman is cooking up a huge batch of chili and freezing it, someone else is doing the same with homemade soup. And they already have someone come in once a week to do the major cleaning, so that’s not a problem.
They’ve both done so much for me and the spouse that I want to return the favor…
Well that’s logical but it doesn’t explain why you delete them — are you just too humble to let us all know that you are even funnier than we already think you are? 😉
So, are you going to ‘fess up why you delete your funniest lines? Or are you just going to work and leave me with this gaping hole in things I need to know even though they are none of my business.
I have a very quirky sense of humor. And I think there are limits to how much of it I’ll inflict on my friends. It’s not that it’s none of your business — it’s self protection. I don’t want anyone to know how dangerously weird I am.
It’s your decision of course but I just want to say — in the most serious and thoughtful way: Are you freakin’ nuts? You have a group of people here who live for the weird, the funny, and the dangerous and you want to deprive us of the combination of all three? That’s just cruel.
::pouts but still manages to look cutely appealing::
Well I’m appealing to your pathological niceness and telling you that it’s unkind to deprive your friends of pleasure. And, of course, on the web if you get embarrassed you can always just get off the ‘puter and go snuggle on the couch.
Before I enter lurk mode for the day, Dengre wrote an amazingly informative diary about Boehner and his connection with Rove and Abramoff that he posted here and on DKos last night. It’s long but worth the read.
I’m going to catch a few zz’s here before toto feeding time in half an hour. If the past few years’ patterns hold, we shouldn’t have any more shaking.

Oops. Just refreshed, and it’s been revised to a 3.3, with a 1.0 (tiny) aftershock half an hour later.
Too many viewings of the Wizard of Oz plays havoc with your sense of what is dangerous.

I remember those too. Spring and summer. Out here we get a couple of bolts of lightning (thunder included) a year. And it does freak people out.

Guess its all what you’re used to.

Wow, I can see why! I can also see why you live there. Looks awfully nice.
Those little squares are very close to where I live…and I did not feel a thing.

Hey wake up everybody. I can’t believe that marmotdude has gone to bed already. Not on his big day.
I think Marmotdude took his hookah and went off with Manee. And I’m going to make up for yesterday’s late night and call it night now.
Pleasant dreams of Dunkie
in that speedo.
🙂
It looks like I woke up just in time to get a clean table here!
Did you fall asleep after survivor?
I came this close to falling asleep during survivor! In fact I fell asleep just as the vote started. Woke up in time to see the farewell speech and then passed out again.
I’m still kind of dazed.
I sorted 2 weeks worth of mail (don’t know how I let it pile up, but it was mostly charity stuff and political stuff) then I settled in to watch CSI.
You woke up just in time for me to say good night. See you in the morning.
what happened to your staying up later routine?
Goodnight! See you in the morning!
Looking for an after-dinner drink before settling down to a little late work. Let’s see …
… AHA! …
no, guess not ….
OH! this looks perfect! Thanks!
For CabinGirl & the Full Moon crowd: images from the Catskills in June — very close to where you may be.
Beautiful WW. We don’t have the hardwood forests here. It is a very different experience.
Be Well
Peace
Gorgeous. Thanks.
These are wonderful. The light in the forest makes it look like delicate lacework.
That looks great…I hope everyone else is as excited about going there as I am. 🙂
Just felt like it.
Gotta go
Later
Peace

Good Morning — wow, it sure gets late fast when you sleep in!
Andi?
Good morning. Do you have time for breakfast?
You nap on the couch all night and then you get up late, too. I am so jealous of your ability to sleep.
It was more of a cuddle than actual sleep, but it was very nice.
And I do have time for breakfast, thanks (although I’ve got some posting to do to)
And you should have an e
You can’t cuddle — you don’t have dogs …. oh.
Got the email and already answered it.
Does anyone else delete their funniest lines?
Huh? This is too much for my morning mush brain — did you delete your funniest line? ’cause it wasn’t “polite” or something?
I always delete my funniest lines. You’ve never seen them.
Well that’s logical but it doesn’t explain why you delete them — are you just too humble to let us all know that you are even funnier than we already think you are? 😉
Humble. Yes, that would be me.
So, are you going to ‘fess up why you delete your funniest lines? Or are you just going to work and leave me with this gaping hole in things I need to know even though they are none of my business.

Maybe it’s the power of my pathological shyness?

Excuse me for jumping in, but yea katiebird what Andi said ;).
That’s Andi! Leave no margin unscathed!!
I’m off to work — Love you all!
And I know what I’m going to do today. What about you? Take a minute to stop by Eat4Today and tell us your plans.
