I worked in a little bar in Philly once, where we actually served pitchers of mixed drinks with a straw…obviously, drunk driving laws were a little more lax then!
We never know what season it is in Tasmania. Summer is a bit warmer, and winter is a bit cooler, but any given day can have every weather known to man back to back, and back again. Rain occures pretty evenly spread thoughout the year. Snow only happens at elevation, but it’s not unusual to seen a snow capped Mt. Wellington (which rises above Hobart, the biggest city) in mid-summer.
Today is sunny and warm, thinly though overcast in spots. The prediction is for humid, and thunderstorms later in the day. Which may or may not happen, as predicting weather here is like predicting the sex of a child – not many options, but just as likely to be wrong as right.
An hour ago it was 71 degrees (in February!). Now its 48 degrees. So all midwesterners can guess what we’ve been hearing — thunder and tornado sirens. It’s really weird to have tornado warnings in February.
I came across one this past summer when we were helping my mom clean out her condo. It was from my brother when he was about 8 or 9 and I think it was for mother’s day. It said something like this:
I will do 10 Hail Marys
I will do 5 Our Fathers (much longer and thus time consuming)
I will say one Act of Contrition
I will do 56 ejaculations.
For those who don’t know an ejaculation is very short, therefore my brother was willing to do 56 of them as opposed to only 5 Our Fathers. I think I can guess why my mother saved this one.
* Note: an ejaculation is a short burst of praise, for instance “Halleluja!” or however you spell it. Or “Amen”
I was wondering if you were going to feel the necessity of explaining what an ejaculation is (not to me but to anyone else reading this). Because otherwise it sounds like your little brother was on Viagra.
oh and This rings a bell, but I don’t remember what we called it.
Know what you mean, Mary. Tuesday we hit 65, yesterday we barely broke 30 and today it’s snowing, very windy and bitterly cold. Supposed to hit -8 tomorrow night, first below-0 we’ve had this winter.
And I’m stuck at home today sick, with the latest bug to go around the office … cocktails sound delightful, but I’m forcing myself to stick to the orange juice and plain water, supplemented by oyster crackers. Lovely! LOL.
Have a scotch for me, Mary! Or a Hendricks martini, both sound good to me… just not today.
Due to Boston Joe’s diary I have the stupid song “Celebrate Good Times1” running over and over in my head. I’ll have to replace it with something even more annoying like the theme from Annie or Mmmm Bop.
.
A special day, some sadness for setback in health issues with close relatives, a surprise I cannot comprehend as yet, a presentation in the evening on sportmanship of players, coaches and parents on youth and field hockey games at Klein Zwitserland; and some happiness for a celebration in Scheveningen with an enjoyable white port.
Congrats. Oui, and sorry about the relative heath issue. Mostly I want to say hi to you and tell you that I miss the chit chat with you.
And do come by the Village and say hi.
I’m way downthread already, and still have a bunch of work to do. Still a couple of hours away from pitchers of drinks with straws in them. I’m thinking about more coffee.
Greetings to all & wondrous woodsy blessings from the benevolent Froggy Fire God.
Can you see him?
He led me through the fields today, leaping through the air with flaming buttocks (I mean his), seeking out a suitable boggy lair in which to wait for springtime (I mean, for him).
Fool that I was, I found myself deceived by the warmth of his froggy bottom to believe Spring had already arrived. I traipsed through the brush in woolen hat but without my shoes, careful to avoid random piles of snow & icy thaw. Alas, the splendid fires of his rear seem to have instituted a slight fever in yours truly (& a desire to hop into bed).
Do you think he cares? No, he just tickles his cheeks with his toes & giggles. What a joker.
Thanks for your good wishes — logging off anon to gather a meal, tend the (indoor) fire & get horizontal.
Seriously, though, this weather .. near 60 today, single digits predicted by Saturday night .. golly!
Woe is me. Just popped over to your site & can barely read your homepage text! Very little contrast, to my eyes, between the text & your background.
Can’t see the links (to comment? ?) at the bottom at all, nor read the scripted text near the top.
Damn. Hope it’s just a serious deficiency on my part — then again, I hope it isn’t.
I’d let you know this stuff over there, but ..
Long story – or not – but I’ll be taking a long hiatus from B.T. See reasons here I’ll drop by when I can but this isn’t the place for my dissenting voice for awhile.
Email is in my profile…I’ll be at DailyKos more often and can always be found at Village Blue.
good luck with whatever you do. I know I will be active in actual campaigns and issues as always. Hope to see you around soon. Dkos is not my favorite place cause of the flame wars
Furniture finally arrived about noonish — spent the majority of the afternoon wrestling with desk assembly (will tackle the lateral file tomorrow), went well except I broke the keyboard tray 🙁 — desk seems to be right height for it anyway so no biggie. So now working on my gorgeous new desktop system, and getting used to a new keyboard — interesting how the touch differs between the keyboard for the iMac and the one on the iBook laptop. So weird to have soooo much desktop space on a computer; I can have Firefox open and still plenty of room to see what’s playing on iTunes. 🙂
Okay, time to go get dinner started…back later (either on this machine or on the laptop…)
I’ll take a double of everything and a large straw.
I worked in a little bar in Philly once, where we actually served pitchers of mixed drinks with a straw…obviously, drunk driving laws were a little more lax then!
I use to serve long islands in pint jars. LOL
You guys are such “hemispherists!”
It’s mid Friday morning in the land downunder, and a fine day at that.
I’ll take an apple cranberry juice, to wash down my weetbix.
If it makes you feel any better, the left coasters think they’ve got a few more hours to go before lounge time…
Oh, and we think it’s winter here too…

I’m a galaxist!

Last week we had snow.
I put a story in the News Bucket just for you.
Thanks! I actually had to go to eat4today.com last night and confess yesterday’s chocolate weakness. I was absolved.
But now I really feel better.
And you didn’t even have to kneel and tell them how long it’d been since your last confession.
Nope. Although it was, in some ways, remarkably unfulfilling to be automatically absolved. There’s something cathartic about being assigned a penance.
I saw you pleading the other day. Shame it didn’t work.
Yes, my Elmer Fudd plea fell on deaf ears. I did receive email responses, but none were very encouraging. Drats.
They have hardened their hearts …
As a fellow catholic, do you remember things called “spritual bouquets” that you would give to someone in lieu probably of an actual gift?
No? What were they? Maybe we called them something else.

oh and This rings a bell, but I don’t remember what we called it.
And I was just about to speculate that this was why all the Catholic boys in our neighborhood looked so happy.
Or why so many of them wore glasses.
LOL I ain’t touching that one
It was probably several years before he actually fulfilled his ejaculation quota. But it was a nice sentiment.
Maybe this is what Cabin Girl’s project is really about?
A premature ejaculation is when you shout alleluia! BEFORE the doctor gives you the diagnosis.

For years we’ve selected different planets for where it’s Friday at our house.
Monday = Friday on Venus
Tuesday = Friday on Alpha Centauri
Wednesday = Friday on Jupiter
Thursday = Friday on Mars
Friday = Friday on Earth
Or rearrange as you see fit….every day can be Friday in my house!
and it is always 5 somewhere LOL
the leader is skating and I don’t like him that much
or will be LOL
landio(sp) mught be young but he is the best looking of all of them!!!
WWBBD?
What would Brian Boitano do?
date them all LOL
oh sure.
I get NO live blogging of curling but now you’re going to ruin the skating suspense for me.
The only suspense for me is what guy comes out in the most hideous outfit.
well I like glitz when you are performing so we shall see. LOL
I told you who won last night. LOL
Due to Boston Joe’s diary I have the stupid song “Celebrate Good Times1” running over and over in my head. I’ll have to replace it with something even more annoying like the theme from Annie or Mmmm Bop.
musckrat love!!!
Yeah, that’ll do it.
How about “Its a Small World” from Disney
ducks and runs for a bunker!
great minds!
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small, small world.
Feel better now? 🙂
Make it stop…now I’m hearing the voice from inside the ride at Disney World…eek.
Please collect all of your personal belongings and exit on the left?
it was one say to see the back works of the ride. when they throw you off mid ride and yes they did stop it, you get taken out a service door.
you should hear a bunch of teenagers doing a nasty version along with the canned voices and we were louder. LOL
Thanks, maryb, I finally got that out of my head after 25 years. It was the song on the windup mobile over the crib of all 4 of my kids. I hated it.
I can not post the version we sang at Disney. Suffice to say we got thrown off the ride when I was 16.
I’m trying to imagine the possibilities…
Having had my step-son and his friends hang out at our house on weekends(anywhere from 4 to 11 of them)…
Yep I got it…now – can someone give my brain a hand up out of this gutter???

Congrats. Oui, and sorry about the relative heath issue. Mostly I want to say hi to you and tell you that I miss the chit chat with you.
And do come by the Village and say hi.
Congrats on the nomination. Now we just have to figure out a suitable bribe to get everybody BT to go vote. A nice bottle of Graves, perhaps?
Congratulations oui!
Many congratulations, Oui — with thanks for truly lovely images & with hopes that familial health issues improve soon.
What the others just said… hearty congrats on your nomination, Oui! J’ai toute intention d’aller voter pour toi et Susan ce soir.
At least I can do something positive from my chair as I sneeze and cough today! LOL
I’m way downthread already, and still have a bunch of work to do. Still a couple of hours away from pitchers of drinks with straws in them. I’m thinking about more coffee.
Kudos on the artwork selection! I adore Anne Taintor, and the good-or-evil gal is one of my favorites.

Hope you feel better. I always find its best to avoid flaming buttocks — I have enough flaming assholes in my life anyway.
Who doesn’t? 😉

Thanks for the input. I just picked a template that they had, so I’ll be tweaking it in the days and weeks to come. Hope to see you there!
Bookmarked…I’ll be dropping by after work late tonight!
Good see you dropping by however briefly….

My Dragon will take care of me while I’m gone
Good luck to you. Don’t forget our meet-up in the Grand Canyon. 🙂
I’m just dropping off B.T. for a while…
I’m like that movie creature “I’ll beeeeee back!”
still making the trek down to SoCal end of March, aren’t you dear? 😕
I got my SoCal Meetup T-Shirt yesterday….
It’s a hiatus not a GBCBT – I’m just burned out on navel gazing.
I’m still going to try to meetup with suskind in Sacto or closer if possible….I’ll keep you posted.
good luck with whatever you do. I know I will be active in actual campaigns and issues as always. Hope to see you around soon. Dkos is not my favorite place cause of the flame wars
