Okay, I’ll pimp away. I spent the weekend with folks who are trying to name the context for all this crap we are living through: the group Historians Against the War held a conference in Austin, TX. Keynote speakers included Howard Zinn, Andrea Smith, and Rashid Khalidi, all thought provoking. There were also a lot of smaller panel presentations.
I stumbled across a William Robinson quote on “poliarchy” reading about Haiti & was immediately struck by how applicable it also seemed to contemporary US — or where we’re heading if not already there. Glad to read Rahul Mahajan make the same point in your summary. Misery afterall, loves company they say . . .
Social and political theorist William Robsinson describes what polyarchy is, in his “Transnational Conflicts: Central America, Social Change, and Globalization,”:
“Developing the social control systems and political institutions most propitious for achieving a stable world environment revolved around the promotion of “democracy,” or what is more accurately called polyarchy. This refers to a system in which a small group actually rules, and participation in decision-making by the majority is confined to choosing among competing elites in tightly controlled electoral processes. This type of “low intensity democracy” does not involve power (cratos) of the people (demos), much less an end to class domination or to the substantive inequality that has grown exponentially under the global economy.”
So the poll has been up for some time.
Interesting to note that Pennacchio’s lead is reduced since then. Casey is the only one improving – someone else have been ‘freeping’ here the last few days.
I am just a novice in the political arena and I know this is a very simplistic idea, but I’ve never understood why all the liberal/progressive blog leaders don’t get together and hold a modern continental congress. I know each blog owner is trying to make a living doing this, but if all could get together, hammer out a constitution of what they stand for, elect leaders and then form one blog where the best of all the blogs could be put. Each individual blog owner would keep their blog, but all would contribute. I’ve heard Booman and Mary Scott on radio and I’ve seen Kos mentioned on MSM. As of now there is no unifying voice speaking for the all the liberal/progressive blogs. I know it’s a pipe dream, but what if there was one blog that said this is who we are and what we believe. These are the best writers from all the blogs and these are the messages we are trying to get out. Everyone keeps talking of organizing. Each blog is like a colony before the revolution, each equal and independent. Each having their own rules and leaders. But until each blog leader can come together and hammer out something to unify the blogosphere, we’re just a bunch of individual voices that are trying to be heard.
As I said, I know this is simplistic, so please educate me on why each blog owner can’t get together and form one blog that is so powerful the MSM can’t ignore it.
Now I’ll take all the flames and stupid hick jokes anyone wants to throw.
I would just like to pimp boran2’s diary. It’s an important topic, and before the diary slips away….
It could use a lot of discussion, and research on the part of all the booman tribe, because it affects almost everybody in the country.
Dealing Dogs on HBO last night. What an eye opener that was. A dog in decent health is worth about $250.00 to Universities where it is used for research. Now I know that research is necessary but I can’t get it to add up with seven beautiful sleeping little souls at my feet right this minute. I had read about being cautious about giving your dogs away but I never fully understood why until I watched the documentary. It was really gruesome……dogs that were heart worm positive possess something very lucrative right now – their heart. The dog dealer in the documentary carved their hearts right out of them and tossed their bodies in a ditch. He would give people $20.00 for a dog and they would meet weekly at a flea market. I’m used to large dogs being abandoned. They require more space and more food than many people are prepared to provide. There were lots of small dogs though that showed up at the flea market that were older and obviously someones pet, but they were worth a quick $20.00 I guess if you happened to leave them in the front yard behind a small fence.
Please don’t go to my blog (link in my signature line below) unless you are terribly sophisticated and worldly. I can’t have just anyone reading it, you know. Having common people read it would just bring the whole thing crashing down. So unless you’re willing to submit a resume, complete bio and current credit report, I’d advise not going there at all. Seriously. I’m turning away now, so don’t let me hear that you’ve clicked on the link! I mean it. < boran2 glances back over his shoulder >
Does anyone know if there’s a tag/code in html for “redacting”, (i.e. “blacking out”) text? I can do it in MS WORD with the redaction add-on but if I paste that text in to a diary or comment on a Website it shows up like this; |||||||||||||||||||||||||
Now, I don’t know that much about computer stuff, so if you could direct me to a site or otherwise explain how to create and then paste a gif that would be really super. I’mk going to search for references to it all in the meantime.
S2, I just searched around a bit and it seems creating a gif is a somewhat complicated process, soplease don’t feel obliged to try to get into it explaining it all here if it’s a big deal.
I’m pretty smart generally but quite ignorant so far concerning computer stuff, having not gotten into to it much until very recently. And, I don’t really need to post redacted stuff on the web; I’d like to learn how eventually but it’s not pressing.
is to put this tag in your text in place of redacted words: img src=” http://www.wearewar.com/black_bar.gif“ but put it in between brackets like this:<>.
use two or three, one right after the other, for variety of length.
if you want to save the image to your computer and host it somewhere else, thats fine. click on the green part above, and when the next window opens hit “command”+”s”. then its yours.
I linked to her marvellous diary in a comment in another diary, and called it Arcturus’ diary.
This was because Arcturus made a wonderful comment in her diary, and I got confused, and not only did I attribute her diary to the wrong author, since I thought it was someone else’s, I failed to say that she is also a wonderful word writer.
My excuse for this error is that I am an old man who cannot see an elephant until it tickles me with its trunk and by then it is so close that I need reading glasses to make sure it is not a hippopotamus with a story of plastic surgery gone wrong. And of course, I am heavily sedated.
Anyway, Lisa, please accept my apology, and my highest compliments for your outstanding word writing ability, and you will all be relieved to know that I do not operate motor vehicles or power tools.
Is it possible that you need a new monitor. I’ve heard several stories where people with otherwise good intentions made mistakes like this leading to unintended offense.
I am blessed with an excellent monitor, and I stand by my post in the thread in which I accused the diary of excellence, and my post in the other thread where I accused Arcurus of being an excellent word writer.
What I failed to do was note that the diary was of Real History Lisa, and accuse her also of excellent word writing, an omission I have since corrected.
And I will reiterate, for the 48th time, that I believe everyone has the right to express their opinions and beliefs, and everyone has the right to agree or disagree with, express sadness, anger, surprise, delight, whatever they wish to express.
It is not necessary, in my opinion, for anyone to feel the need to recant or dissimulate who they are or what they believe.
Plus, don’t forget, I update my own blog fairly regularly. Some days the content is pretty eclectic – including among other things a review of an album by former Last Poet Gylan Kain: The Blue Guerilla.
Apparently someone has finally managed to hack OS X. It’s too late and I’m too tired to go into great detail here, but apparently it’s now possible for Mac users to get a virus from going to bad, nasty, evil websites and not even know they’ve been infected.
I know this is sounding like one of those virus parodies, but it’s for real. Check Symantec.
Anyway, there’s an easy fix. The problem is only if you are using Safari. What you need to do is go into Preferences, the general preferences page. There’s an option that says, “Open Safe Files After Downloading.” This apparently is an automatically executed script and is the opening for Trojan horses or viruses or whatever it is we are supposed to be worried about.
This box is default checked. Uncheck the box. You are safe.
If I had the Znet email on me, I’d give you all the links and backup, but you’re just going to have to either trust me or do the research…
Maybe not the kind of “pimping” you were referring to, but I would like to say that I took some of the discussion here last weekend with Stark and others on race into work yesterday. Since I’m convinced that open conversation is one of the only ways we can make progress on this topic – it is just one more way that what we’re doing here is helping to change the world – one little bit at a time.
on February 23, 2006 at 9:21 am
OK, well I’ll take care of the pimping for you, NL! lol.
Actually, I’d been thinking about you and our conversation in terms of a couple of articles I wrote and published “back then” (i.e., while living in S.P.) but didn’t mention them because all I have are the published hardcopies (that was about 10 harddrives ago!).
However, I just went and did some digging. At least one of those articles is now online. I believe (am not sure) this was the one that I got a call about years later…a woman working with kids in East LA tracked me down, and called to thank me for the article. She said she was using it in a teenage writing class, that it was working very well to inspire students in East LA to address some of these issues (the nexus of poverty, race, ethnicity).
So, dunno. Maybe it, too, would be of use to you. May be too far over the top for the “nice-iness” you are dealing with up there, but I thought as long as it is now online….here tis….
I’m not sure that URL will take you directly to the article, if not, go to “print journal,” and from there to Issue # 6, article titled
Illegal Alien: A Homecoming Address
Odd. As I recall, I’d originally titled that piece “love it or leave it”–at any rate, fwiw….there tis.
In fact, now that I’ve found it online, I may just go over to that A-word diary and pimp this there!
about the open conversation issue. It certainly isn’t because I think that I’m right, I do believe that I am informed and it takes work to be informed now. Someone isn’t going to become well informed snatching early morning bits of CNN but a lot of people haven’t realized that yet. It takes a conscious effort right now to be informed and sharing the information is the next step!

I posted a summary of some panels here and some questions for the historically minded here.

Thanks for pointing me to the Robinson definition. I looked for it and didn’t find it — looks like the problem was spelling!
Hmm, Pennacchio seems to have a rather strong appeal, at least among netizens.

Same percentages now.
Just wondering; what would the expected outcome be at a site like that? Who would they support?
The poll got noticed.
Links to a page from February 19 about the new name of Danish pastries in Iran..
You have to scroll way down the page. Look for Casey’s name.
So the poll has been up for some time.
Interesting to note that Pennacchio’s lead is reduced since then. Casey is the only one improving – someone else have been ‘freeping’ here the last few days.
