“A Gallup report released today reveals that more than half of all Americans, rejecting evolution theory and scientific evidence, agree with the statement, “God created man exactly how Bible describes it.”
Another 31% says that man did evolve, but “God guided.” Only 12% back evolution and say “God had no part.”
Gallup summarized it this way: “Surveys repeatedly show that a substantial portion of Americans do not believe that the theory of evolution best explains where life came from.” They are “not so quick to agree with the preponderance of scientific evidence.” “
We would be wise to understand what this is saying to us.
(no, not “most people are stupid”)
These people are asked to choose between two positions
scientific evolution
religious creation
The most vocal adherents of either position are often completely dismissive of the other position.
One side has religion, which is long, boring, complicated, and irrelevant to their daily lives.
The other side has science, which is long, boring, complicated, and irrelevant to their daily lives.
Most Americans identify themselves as spiritual, if not religious.
So given that, I’m not too surprised at the poll’s results. Its a false choice.
For a lot of respondents, their “trusted sources” tell them that evolution precludes spirituality. That accounts for why the pure science explanation is so low. Those that reconcile the two create the mixed compromise position. Those that trust their religious sources over their science sources (or simply choose the most ‘acceptable’ answer) account for the biblical view.
The problem isn’t having the wrong answer. The problem is deeper:
They don’t trust us (science, liberals, etc)
Their side controls “popular opinion” through the media and at the local level — churches, etc. (people who don’t really care pick the answer that will cause them the least trouble)
We can get worked up about evolution, and that’s important too. But its those deeper problems that are going to kill us in the long run unless we start countering them.

AP: Former Texas Gov. Ann Richards has cancer
Mar 8, 4:15 PM EST
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Former Gov. Ann Richards said Wednesday she
has cancer of the esophagus and will undergo treatment at the world-
renowned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Richards, 72, went in for tests Monday and got the diagnosis
Tuesday, said spokesman Bill Maddox.
Maddox said the former governor is waiting to hear from M.D.
Anderson how advanced the cancer is and what her chances are.
“She’s facing this challenge,” Maddox said.
I do not have a link for the story. I just got it in an email.
I love Ann Richards and am sending her warm thoughts of love and healing.
Don’t see anywhere else to put this, but, after our discussion on Obama (yesterday?), I noticed this article in the NYT, and thought I’d direct you to it , BooMan, in case you missed it.
Senator Barack Obama flew at least nine times on corporate jets last year, traveling to fund-raisers in New York and San Francisco, home to Chicago and to Rosa Parks’s funeral in Detroit. Each time, he reimbursed the plane’s owners at first-class rates, as Senate rules require.
But Mr. Obama, freshman Democrat from Illinois, felt queasy about this perk of Senate life, so he said he gave it up.
“This is an example where appearances matter,” he said. “Very few of my constituents have a chance to travel on a corporate jet.”
Needless to say, I find this more impressive than the speech. 😉
Our local embedded paper has reached new lows in the art of propaganda asserting the bizzarre notion asserting the destruction of Falluja as a reason to continue in Iraq. How crazy can they get?!
Maybe it just needs to be perked back up?? 🙂
Mine too… 🙁
Mine appears to be ok, are you guys still having problems?
thanks for pacifying the gnomes. 🙂
De nada 🙂
Won’t be back up until the NSA is done reading your e-mails.
Earthlink was down in NYC for about 14 hours yesterday. Maddening.

Well I must live a very sheltered life because I know no one…well, let me put it this way…everyone I know must be part of that 12%.
We would be wise to understand what this is saying to us.

My mind is racing, trying to find words… (thanks to Booman and if anything happens, I’m taking you with me, baby :))

Godzilla vs. Mothra is my favorite.
MY daughter is a big Godzilla fan. But when she was little the little … fairies?.. the 2 little women… scared her. Not the monsters. Those two women 🙂
I made out like a bandit. Had to walk out before we saw more we “had to have”.
