Though I could not caution all, I still might warn a few;
Don’t lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools.
That is my advice to the people who still support this administration. Patiotism is the last recourse for the scoundrel…or something like that. And we are being led by scoundrels.
The President was caught red-handed spying on Americans without any judicial oversight. His response? He is only spying on suspected terrorists that call into or out of the United States. But, now we know that is a lie.
The administration revealed the identity of a non-official cover CIA officer specializing in non-proliferation issues. Their response? She wasn’t a covert officer and they have no idea who leaked her name. We now know that was a lie.
This administration told us that the intelligence community thought that Iraq was seeking uranium from Niger. We now know that was a lie.
Dick Cheney told us that Mohammed Atta met with an Iraqi intelligence officer in Prague. We now know that was a lie.
The President told us that he didn’t want to go to war except as a last resort. We now know that was a lie.
This administration has no credibility left. The Vice-President has obstructed justice in a three year investigation. His former chief-of-staff is on trial. The Secretary of State, in charge of international diplomacy, has been caught red-handed lying about the intelligence used to justify the war in Iraq. Stephen Hadley, the national security officer, is probably going to be indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice. Karl Rove, the President’s defuty chief of staff is probably going to be indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice.
In Congress, Tom DeLay has been indicted and will resign his seat. Bill Frist is under investigation for insider trading. And up to a dozen Congressional Republicans face the prospect of corruption charges.
And what do we have to show for all this criminality? A catastrophe on 9/11 and in New Orleans. A military, moral, and financial disaster in Iraq. And a wrecked budget. Meanwhile, the administration attempts to whittle away at the most basic of civil rights, while asserting its right to disregard pretty much anything Congress says, thinks, or directs.
If we cannot impeach Bush and Cheney for this record, then there is no reason to have a provision for impeachment in the Constitution.
I can’t even imagine there are many visitors here who need more persuasion on this.
all the congessional staffers that read this seem to have a need for some convincing.
challenged.
Bush’s lies have cost at least 30,000 lives (that’s his estimate and is probably very low). People who have gotten others killed with their lies are probably few in number.
Clinton’s lies about getting a blowjob in the Oval Office cost zero lives. People who’ve lied about sex would probably include everyone past puberty.
Clinton was impeached. If congressional staffers can make sense out of that, the job qualifications need to be adjusted.
If it’s a logical argument they require, here it is!! I suspect they need something stronger.
Here’s your quote, Boo, along with a few others by Johnson on the same subject.
At last to feel useful as an English major in this pond full o’ wonks!
refuge or recourse…
I came close 🙂
The interesting question is why do so many people still support Bush?
Let’s ignore the obvious people, those on the take, political pundits who make a living by agreeing with those who pay their salaries, and corporatists who benefit from current tax policies.
What motivates the people identified by Thomas Frank who vote for “values” instead of their economic and social well being?
Having seen their “values” being trampled by executive greed, lying and corruption why don’t they look for a new group of politicians who would do a more honest job?
I don’t know the answer, but it seems to me figuring this out should be an important goal of the Dems if they are going to change to balance of power. These people need to be understood and then they need to be addressed on those subconscious worries that motivate them.
still support Bush, the number of which is now in the distinct minority and falling fast.
It is the weak-kneed, no-principles politicians, who supposedly represent the vast majority of us who think Bush needs to be held accountable for the mess he has perpetrated on us, but who, for reasons unknown, refuse to hold him to account.
I am coming to believe that BushCo HAS used their illegal spying to gather dirt on potential political rivals to keep them silent, or toe their line.
Ingredients; 1. helping of entitlement (to riches, to being the ‘elite’ , etc) 2. throw in a dash intolerance (of xenophobia, backwards awareness of gender diversity, and perhaps a bit of racism?) 3. include an abiding anger of the resignation of Nixon and the vindication that Reagan brought them.. and lastly, 4. a generous dose of cognitive dissonance when things start to catastrophically go wrong.
Mix all that up and you have what must be Bush’s strongest supporters. I think the people who are still with him are the ones that feel that he’s the last shot. They are so close to getting everything they want and right now it’s a race to see how much they can get before thre last dominoe falls. How long can they hold out? Just a little longer and they will achieve a greater stranglehold on the courts and a definite overturning of Roe V Wade.
When the Pres. finally falls, irrevocably, all of that agenda that the right wants will have to be tabled indefinitely (that’s my feeling on it anyway). People know that. So, no matter how bad Bush is, he gets a ride.
It’s only a feeling I have
I’d just add to this that we should never underestimate the rationalization powers of the “rapture” crowd. I watched my Dad (who has been a card-carrying member of the “moral majority” for years) continue to support Nixon all the way through and beyond the impeacment process. He finally began to question him when the transcript of the tapes were published and he saw how much Nixon swore. So to the kool-aid drinkers, swearing is worse that lying, money laundering, spying on Americans, and totally disregarding the constitution.
Hell, people got more up in arms about the Chandra Levy case than they do about el Presidente.
What we need is a missing white woman. I volunteer to go missing for the cause (*only if I don’t actually have to go anywhere other than hanging out in my house playing Civ IV for the duration… and that I don’t actually have to talk to any politicians or media in the process… and of course that no harm shall come to me from the administration or those guys who render people extraordinarily…). I can see the plan a-happening as we speak… 😉
