trying to figure out how to live without a set fitness program anymore. It’s been neat to see that all of the good habits I picked up the past twelve weeks are ones that I’m willing to continue.
Hi, katiebird! I checked out your website! Great idea not to take seconds or eat between meals. I should try that, too. The French never eat between meals, and look how skinny they are. Not that being skinny is what it’s all about, but a nice side effect, anyway.
I spent a good deal of my life obssessed with food, since I was a dancer, and it took me a long time to figure out how to eat well so that I was both highly energetic and extremely lean. I think I ran the gamut of eating disorders, pretty much.
That sounds very stressful. I stuck pretty faithfully to obesity, either moving toward it or away from it. Like a yoyo. I’m hoping that’s behind me now.
sounds like it behind you since (as I discovered) it’s all about healthy, sensible eating in a life style that you are comfortable with and can maintain over the long term. I’ve slipped off the program a bit, getting lazier and more self-indulgent now that I’m older and don’t have to run around in leotards anymore.
Thanks, AndiF! Yes, pretty much all packed up. It seemed endless, and I did as much as I could before I passed out. The back got pretty stiff, even despite following your excellent advice about bending the knees, etc.
Hi there, Jim! It was fun living so near the coast and having a digital so that I could get lots of practice and learn how the waves move and the different kinds of light in different weathers and different times of the day.
It depends. If I am just out playing or don’t want to worry whether I’ll fill up 1GB of compact flash before I can download, I shoot JPEG. If we’re on vacation and shooting something I’m not likely to get another chance to shoot for a few years, and I want to be able to post process to get the most out of my shot, I shoot RAW.
Sherlock Holmes was always one of my favorites mysteries. So in this case we had person missing. Curiosity just got the better of me, I guess. And then since every last thing we do here is saved for posterity…
on my out of San Diego I stopped at one of the malls in El Cajon to walk around and found a store that sold hookah’s cheaply. I almost bought one, but decided that it was better to enjoy them with friends at a hookah bar rather than alone at my apt.
My watch seems to broken, I’ll need to reset it to 4:20
Hookahs are a lot of fun, but definitely a communal endeavor. At this weird arts festival I went to, a group set up a Hookah dome, but with real nice tobacco. It was great and it was fun to watch the cops circle the place. :>)
cool Haiku, that was one poetry form I never mastered. I remember writing them in english classes in h.s. and college but my wordsmithing is best done in abundance 🙂
I suck at poetry, but boy do I love Haiku! It is a hoot and no matter how much you suck at poetry, Haiku always sound impressive.
We are fearing more rain here in the bay area, but otherwise it is great. Whenever I get really pissed off at the world, I can always thank the Goddess that saner heads live in this part of the world. :>)
me too, they can be a lot of fun. And I’d never even heard of them until about ’94 when I lived in N CA, and was part of a poetry group that had a monthly meeting for open mike and another once a month for great regional poets. I heard some really great ones.
I’d lay some on ya, but they’re on the wrong computer. I’ve even got to go through DOS to get to them, ha! If I can still remember how to do that.
of trial and error. I’m not kidding! I’ve searched everywhere using Windows stuff, and then remembered it was done on the DOS side of things, a carry over from the first 40 Mg hard drive, ha ha, what a joke that is now.
I have to charge the batteries still LOL — b/c my own were so drained after getting home w/ all the accoutrements! dada — if I can figure out how to put the lens on the camera I’ll be flying! 🙂
Nice (ooooh aaaah ooooh aaaaah!!!!!) like the shape cuz my little fuji 3800 is the same shape and I like the way it kind of snuggles into my hand so I can carry it easily and unobtrusively.
Those are the topmost leaves on a 3-4 foot tall hickory tree. The red tissue at the base of the leaves is what is left of the bud that the leaves emerged from. We’ve lived in the woods for 25 years, and I played in the woods for many years before that, but I’d never noticed the bud ‘s color until today. It is Olivia’s fault.
What I did was easy. I shoot in program mode (P) most of the time to give me more flexibility on shutter speed and aperture. I framed the shot, focused, reframed, set the aperture at f10 to get a reasonably wide depth of field, let the camera figure out that meant a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second, checked the framing and focus one more time, and pressed the shutter release the rest of the way. The whole process took 5-10 seconds.
What I couldn’t do was stop the wind from blowing. I should have used a faster shutter speed. But I still like the shot.
After about 4 months of frustration, I started to see how to work with the camera instead of against it. The trip to Lassen and Redwoods was our first vacation with the D70. Until that trip I had only taken a handful of decent shots. I was so frustrated that I was thinking about taking my trusted film cameras and waiting for another year before taking the D70. I’m glad Andi talked me out of it.
I had only used film before the D70. I think you will probably figure out how to work with the camera in less time than I did because of your digital background.
Drink up!
I brought kegs for Manny
Has he been around? I haven’t seen him.
He was here this afternoon with a BIG FAT headache.
Ah, poor guy.
sorry for me, katiebird, it was self-inflicted 🙂
Oh, well — that’s ok then.
hm.
trying to figure out how to live without a set fitness program anymore. It’s been neat to see that all of the good habits I picked up the past twelve weeks are ones that I’m willing to continue.
Just woke up from my nap, and went down to watch the sunset over the ocean one more time.
That’s so lovely.
Thanks, maryb! I’m headed back to LA tomorrow…. the sunsets look different there.
They may not look the same but they’ll be your HOME sunsets so you will appreciate them.
Zackly! And sometimes smog can do amazing things with the light.
That’s wonderful.

Stop by anytime you like. It’s not so much getting skinny that I’m interested in as controlling the diabetes and obesity.
I spent a good deal of my life obssessed with food, since I was a dancer, and it took me a long time to figure out how to eat well so that I was both highly energetic and extremely lean. I think I ran the gamut of eating disorders, pretty much.

What a wonderful farewell. Gorgeous sunset, gorgeous photo of sunset.
All packed up?
Thanks, AndiF! Yes, pretty much all packed up. It seemed endless, and I did as much as I could before I passed out. The back got pretty stiff, even despite following your excellent advice about bending the knees, etc.
Nice to have someone follow my advice — I never do.
Just tell yourself never to follow your own advice. Then you will be following your own advice either way!
Great shot. The colors and shapes of the clouds and sea are wonderful, but the bird and the spray make it more interesting.
Hi there, Jim! It was fun living so near the coast and having a digital so that I could get lots of practice and learn how the waves move and the different kinds of light in different weathers and different times of the day.
I’m looking forward to seeing LA through your eyes.
sssshhh…don’t let Mb know I’m here…
OT camera query, Jim… do you set your D70 on RAW or JPG?
<tap, tap>

If we’re on vacation and shooting something I’m not likely to get another chance to shoot for a few years, and I want to be able to post process to get the most out of my shot, I shoot RAW.
That’s kinda what I’ve settled on at this stage. JPG’s for messin’ around, RAW for serious stuff…big files. 12+ Mb v 3Mb for J’s.
‘preciate it. Has Olivia been around? I think she made the plunge today…or at least was seriously contemplating it.
What happened to NDD? I never really got to talk to him.
went back to read some old FBCs to see if I’d missed anything… I veel half no comment!
You have any withdrawal symtoms in the 10? days off you had from BT?
I can’t decide if that’s sweet or frightening.
We’d have it down to hours, but there seems to be something wrong with the clocks.
I think I might go with creepy.
And you just happened to have it handy?
I don’t think they allow creepy in North Dakota — doesn’t meet the state-wide wholesome standards.
Sherlock Holmes was always one of my favorites mysteries. So in this case we had person missing. Curiosity just got the better of me, I guess. And then since every last thing we do here is saved for posterity…
Any of you guys ever google your screen name?
Now that’s scary!!!!
Whew! You’re right. It’s not good, at least in my case.
I knew where I was every minute of the day.
You’re not supposed to google yourself. I causes blindness.
Did I see Fat Tire upthread? Don’t mind if I do.
4:20?
Manny! You are so bad! Can I join you? :>)

There was a big article about Hookah Bars in it last Sunday.
No, I don’t, but I have heard about such places. Now I’m tempted to go and get me a hookah and have parties with all kinds of flavors. :>)
with the white peach, but as I’ve posted in other cafes. Keep it away from the marmot. He does the lampshade dance on top of the bar with that flavor.
I just want to say I love BooMan Tribune.
Here is a Haiku for you:
I long for the sounds
of a night beside the pond
Are you happy now?
cool Haiku, that was one poetry form I never mastered. I remember writing them in english classes in h.s. and college but my wordsmithing is best done in abundance 🙂
How’s the bay area treating you?
That’s so great, I’m putting it up on my wall when I get back home.
I suck at poetry, but boy do I love Haiku! It is a hoot and no matter how much you suck at poetry, Haiku always sound impressive.

Oh come one…just make one up for us…here, I’ll give another one:
This pond is so blue
Blue not red is our color
ok sometimes green
:>)

Heh, all those DOS tracks got laid down in junior high, before I was heavy on my hookah usage, so they stuck. Glad it could help someone!
you’ve been taking day trips (pun intended) to Jerome with me? Hmmph
🙂
of course I meant without me, perhaps that’s a signal I’ve had enough hookah tonight.
Maryb has advised me to plead the fifth. 😉
petals open wide
inviting closer regard
sensual delight
You do macros with words too! Great! I like it!
did you write it?
And…inquiring minds want to know…Camera?
Of course I wrote it — I told everyone I’m getting all sorts of ideas from The Book … It’s very ah, inspiring … 😉
(You did read about about The Book, right?)
Here he is … isn’t he beautiful!
Kewll! A redwing, blackbird Nikonous Deseventious…congrats!!!
I have to charge the batteries still LOL — b/c my own were so drained after getting home w/ all the accoutrements! dada — if I can figure out how to put the lens on the camera I’ll be flying! 🙂
flying, that is…:{)
You’re gonna love it, and I can’t wait to see what you do.
Nice (ooooh aaaah ooooh aaaaah!!!!!) like the shape cuz my little fuji 3800 is the same shape and I like the way it kind of snuggles into my hand so I can carry it easily and unobtrusively.
I can hardly wait for the trial runs to begin!!
Fabulous!!!
I wrote this one about the spider on my office window last week …
balled spider sits still
while leaves, web-caught and held
shudder with the wind
And this one about the ottawa river out the window …
blue river flows
small rapids crest, catch the sun
sparkling my way
These are so much fun!
isn’t the only thing shuddering. Bud doesn’t like them either
A spider? That’s surprisingly mean for you Olivia. I love it.
been harrassing me all week due. It all started with the pink behemoth creature she photographed.
Poor you. (heh)
the breaking news alert I gave them all regarding the tarantula at my office had nothing to do with it.
Vulviform faces
Are habitual selfers
They want you to watch
I LOVE it … and you too! :*
larger
Wow, that’s so cool! What the heck is it?

That Olivia is such a trouble maker!
Now tell me everything you did to get this shot LOL! 😉
… you just look like this:
I love the stalking dog …
I guess I’ll never be able to do — I seem to be missing some key parts! 😉
Oh, I’m sorry for the confusion — the only part that is required is the ‘looking dorky’ part.
I’ve got that covered already! :~)
(You’re up late tonight! I love it!)
was so strong it came right through the ether and gave me a second wind — which has now died down to a faint breeze. I’ll be off to bed in just a few.
::whistles:: Nice legs!
Hopeful says thanks, but only whistle if you’re calling him to dinner.
Pfft, men. Don’t even know how to be sexually harassed. ;p

Well, I understand the first sentence … 😉 This has now been saved to my ‘Jim file’ for future reference.
LOL!
Remember that learning curve I warned you about. ; )
… It’s a 90 degree angle! 🙂
It’s steep but not a wall.

There are very helpful people at these two websites too.

And how’d ya do that?
The blurry leaves were the result of wind. The out of focus background was the result of using a macro lens which has a very shallow depth of field.
