May the 4’s be with you
This song has been in my head since Friday random ten.
“Up against the wall, you redneck mothers!”
“…Mothers who have raised their sons so well
He’s thirty-four, and drinking in some honkytonk,
just kicking hippies’ asses and raising hell…”
Who is that, CG – Jerry Jeff Walker? I used to love that song.
It’s a Ray Wylie Hubbard tune, and the version I have is on a Cracker cd called Countrysides.
I’ve been cursing you all weekend because it’s been in my head, over and over and over. At least it’s not the theme from Annie.
Boys done with school?
Oh, if that’s worst that gets stuck in your head from my collection, count yourself lucky. Have you heard the bluegrass version of Eurotrash Girl yet?
The guys have school all this week, and half days Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the following week. How about your boys?
Basically done except for finals Tuesday and Wed. Colin graduates on Saturday. :::sob!:::
OMG! At least youstill have the rest of the summer before he leaves. I forget (or maybe you haven’t said) – Where is he going to college in the fall?
He’s going to UNC-Pembroke. Thinking of majoring in broadcast journalism with a minor in business. His grades sucked this year and he couldn’t get into the college he wanted to go to, so if he does well he may transfer after the first year.
The kid is smarter than I am. I know that’s hard to believe but it’s true! π Just lazy as hell about schoolwork.
Is that close to home? Where did he want to go?
Lazy with homework…I am all too familiar with that problem. π
His dream school would have been UNC-Chapel Hill but that was never really a possibility. Too selective. His realistic top choice was UNC-Greensboro where his sister goes but he didn’t get in. He was shocked when they didn’t take him. I think it was a well-needed kick in the pants.
I’m sure he’ll be more motivated than he was in high school and wind up transferring. What is your daughter up to now?
This is the summer before her senior year and she and 4 or 5 other kids are renting a house near campus. She calls me all the time to ask how to cook things. It’s cute.
Hey, nice private conversation we’re having here. Maybe no one else will show up and we can go into a dark corner and make out or something.
When do you leave for Hootchieville – I mean Las Vegas?
Hmmph…can’t get a moment’s privacy, can we? π
I still want to know what we were going to watch. π
Season finale of the Sopranos, right? π
Since I don’t get HBO, I guess I have to settle for something going on in the cafe. π
Oh now they show up!
Watch what?
if you make it sexy, they will come (pun intended).
C’mon, me and SN? How could it be anything but?
Off topic here, although I don’t want to be. Are ya’ll having trouble with the margins?
Forget it, it seems fixed now.
Sounds like she’ll have fun.
About 95 hours from now (Thursday evening), I should be on the plane…but who’s counting? π
I have a bluegrass version of Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” done by the Austin Lounge Lizards. Does that count? For me it’ll have to, because I’ve never heard of Eurotrash Girl.
I also have several specimens in my collection from a guy who calls himself Richard Cheese. He does lounge versions of punk and alternative stuff. I kid you not, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard “American Idiot” crooned out by a guy who has the lounge shtick down so pat you can just hear the polyester in his voice.
I’ve got that one too…I love the lounge lizards. Never heard the RIchard Cheese stuff though.
A semi-hosted cafe..does that mean a truck driver is in charge??
I believe it means the host is a lazy SOB and probably sleeping in the back room.
so what makes the host wake up..when we leave with all the beer.
It’s a tie-in with Disney/Pixar’s Cars, opening this week in a theater near you. Rated G.
My parents (who are Disney afficianados) gave it two thumbs up. My sister got them tickets to a special preview.
However, my dad thought it was slightly inappropriate to have one of the cars race a train to the crossing and try to make it across while the gate was going down. Bad, bad thing for kids to do. Other than that, no issues.
Well, I gotta agree with him, but then cartoons are full of things kids should never do. Swim through a field of jellyfish, for instance.
Speaking of dangerously ridiculously stupid things, I just got done watching a Mythbusters episode where they tested out the old cartoon trick of sticking your finger into the barrel of the shotgun so the gun will blow up in Elmer Fudd’s face. Guns these days are apparently too well made. Not only could they not get the guns to backfire, they couldn’t even get the barrel to peel back like a banana. What a ripoff.
Really, you can’t count on anything these days.
I bet those sticks of dynamite that Roadrunner always avoided don’t work that way either.
I doubt it. There was an episode where they tried to paint a room using dynamite (apparently this was portrayed once on Mr. Bean) but that one scrolled off the TiVo before I got a chance to see it.
Evening, folks.
How close are you to having all your grading done?
Hi Andi. I’m really close. My grades are due by midnight Friday and I will easily make it.
We had beautiful weather today, did you? Did you do any biking?
Glad to hear that you are almost done. I know how happy Jim is when the last grade of the year is done.
The weather here was just perfect when I wasn’t on the bike. On the bike, it was less than perfect because it was windy (but still a nice ride).
Right now, I am trying to type exams, so I should really go. I’ll be back on the weekend.
Hi Toni. How’s you day going?
I’ve had better. I got a call early from my brother. He told me that my dad had shingles, right around his eye. It has made for kind of a stressful day.
How are you?
I’m sorry to hear that. I know it can be very painful.
I’m doing fine.
You don’t have to be grading papers to much longer now do you?
Just until Friday.
Did you have a good day?
It was so-so. I’m probably going to be calling it a very early night tonight.
How did your planting go?
It’s all planted. I’m dreading tomorrow though … π
Why dreading, Work? Just a few facts. π
Did you plant all of that in a regular garden or boxes and planters?
In the garden bed … except for the basil, which I put in pot so that if the weather gets cold I can bring it inside.
Sorry to hear about your dad. Will this affect your trip?
Hi all. Just enjoying a Dead Guy Ale after a hot day (almost 75 degrees! Might as well move to the desert! ;>)
How’s it going today?
Well I hate to, but I’m about to fall asleep in the chair.
I’ll see ya’ll later.
Sleep well FM.
they cooked the margins and had a great feast…I wonder who…
don’t all fit on a laptop, yawl…:{)
Hi O, K, FM CG, SN,…………………………………………………………….
hi dada and everyone else you just listed. (being lazy here).
trying to be lazy, but gotta grill dinner…so it’s in and out for a while.
Good weather in the ‘Gateway’ city?
great weather today. sunny, not too hot and a little bit of a breeze.
How bout you? Good weather?
we’ve been 10 – 20º over normal for the last 10 day/2 wks….kinda of temps you expect in late july/aug… looks a bit like another drought summer in the works.
Yeah, it’s a mixed blessing. Having beautiful sunny days all the while knowing you need rain. Even with all the rain we had this spring we’re still 5 inches below average. If I were in charge of things there’d be showers every night after midnight. And beautiful sunny days. π
Lucky you. I went out to work on getting the patio and grill in shape in anticipation of the upcoming grilling season, and as I was cleaning the burner element of the grill it came apart in my hands. So it’s off to the big box store next weekend to get a new one. (I just replaced it two years ago so I’m sort of miffed, but on the other hand it wasn’t that expensive and now I know how to replace it at least.)
Then hopefully that day the weather will cooperate and I can go out and play with fire like Guys from time-in-a-memorial have done.
have long since forgotten how to cook indoors, with a few exceptions…blizzards slow me down tho…:{)
That’s the way to do it. Gratification through incineration. Unfortunately up here it eventually gets cold enough to make us wusses go back indoors, but I tell you, during the heat of summer there’s nothing better than sitting outside when things finally start cooling off a bit and not having to heat up the house just because people are complaining that they’re hunnnnnnn-gryyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!
There’s maryb!
Hey SN! You sound surprised?
I thought you were out of commission for awhile. Maybe I’m mixing you up with someone else..it would not be the first time.
I was out of commission most of the weekend. It’s been a busy one. I’m pooped.
I’m pooped for no discernable reason. But I get the bed to myself for the week. Yay!
you are going to be in a very good mood all week. Where’s Mr. Nature this week? Somewhere exciting?
Dear God, he’s at yet another conference in Disney World. Last month they made 60 engineers walk around in Hawaiian shirts following engineer-herders with light sabres.
Before I forget — October 7. Meetup in Chicago.
That’ll give you time to get your passport in order π
Now, how was your weekend?
Is it at that chocolate place? π
W/e was too short. Did you have fun?
you need to start getting yourself ready to meet us. We won’t let you rest until you do π
No, B&B might happen in the winter. This is Chicago. Easy to reach from Canada via airplane. π
I think it’ll be even worse xing after what happened this w/e up here …
chocolate in Chicago. There is a Ghirardelli’s near Water Tower.
Things will calm down by October. I’m sure you’ll be fine crossing the border. Just don’t bring in any contraband and don’t make any jokes while you go through security.
There’s lot of lovely chocolate to be had in Chicago. But even better there will be me, mary, jim, ivg, and who know who else. We really, really need you to come. ::looks pathetic:: (a natural talent)
Is this a private party?
when maryb and I had talked about it before. We’d love to have you come.
Oh, sure. :::sniff:::
but you can come too!
We’re trying to find a date where enough people can make it. Eventually I’ll probably do a diary. But after seeing the lack of response on the Memphis diaries and the East coast meetup diaries I decided I would go at it a different way. I call it personal invitation. Others might call it arm twisting.
Saturday October 7 — Chicago. You in?
See, that’s my problem. I have this identity crisis thing happening having been a midwesterner my whole life. I’m still a midwesterner, dammit.
a midwesterner at heart. The term Midwest Meetup is really just based on where people live. But since Orville and Wilbur invented their amazing flying machines, things are easier. Especially if you have access to Southwest and can fly into Midway. It can be fairly cheap.
I’ll bet there might even be a direct flight without stopping first in Atlanta or Newark. Wouldn’t that be just awesome?
… will get everyone to come … π
I’m taking that as a “yes”
I’ll go if you’ll go, O. Then we can take up a collection for Family Man.
But his family would fall apart w/out him that long …
His freaking brother/sister lives across the street! Surely they can take care of Mom for 2 days?
I was a little shocked to learn that.
Just goes to show what an exemplary caregiver he is that Mom doesn’t want anyone else. But he’d have such a good time! And we could personally gang up on him about his smoking! Oh, the joy!
I got a couple comments in last week in your absence. Not up to your standards, but enough for him to ask if I’d been getting lessons from you … π
yeah, you don’t want to scare him off SN π
The plan is: we tell him there’s mud wrestling and then we wham him with the smoking after he’s there.
I’ll go if you’ll go
what are the rest of us? chopped liver?
On crackers. I love that, which is why I’ll go unless you were really trying to sneak it by me in which case…I’ll go anyway just to bug you.
no sneaking involved. Andi and I just started talking about it last week.
This will be great if you come. And O! We can work on FM but I’m doubtful if we’ll budge him.
IVG said he wanted to come and NDD is thinking about it.
What did you have in mind?
Just that I’d love to talk to Jim in person about all this stuff we’ve talked about via email.
Darn, maybe I won’t go after all. My life is so lacking in salaciousness.
can go to town taking pictures of Chicago. I’m sure there are many macro opportunities there.
to get you to come. π
π
she’s coming — it’s you we are working on. π
Okay, you’ve kept me up begging long enough. I’m really off to bed now. Night. (And I’m expecting you to come to Chicago.)
Did all your weekend events go well?
Everything did go well. I had about 12 people show up for the coffee and I think I hooked most of them in to vote for this candidate. He did a good job presenting himself. He’s probably more liberal than most of the people there but they LOVED the fact that he’s not tied into the establishment. So that was good. I even invited 2 of my conservative friends and they didn’t hate him.
Graduation party and wedding reception were fine. Today I went to the baseball game and out to dinner.
That’s such an impressive list — it’s like the last twelve years of my social outings replayed at warp speed.
I didn’t even mention my pedicure π
Where I fell asleep in the chair. It was kind of embarassing because she needed me to switch feet and had to wake me up.
that’s just too much excitement for this geezer to take, even vicariously. I’ll have to retire to my bed and try to recover.
(sound convincing?)
good night
insincere as ever π
night.
I seem to have gotten involved in begging you to come to chicago.
I’m going to open a 24/7 unless someone objects.
Um…sustained?
Here it is
Everybody leave your mess here and head on over.
