My DH has a picture of himself taken with it (I suppose it was visiting Denver after the Av’s won it a few years back). The picture has pride of place up in the dining room. 🙂
I took the shot from below the flower so there is the canopy in the background.
O God, I’m so happy Jon is back from vacation to cheer me up with his cynical snarky humor! And then there will be Stephen, and then Keith, my three Musketeers!
There is AC in the building but not in the row of offices where I am stationed, except for the bosses office since he had a special vent put in for himself. They are getting estimates to fix it. Plus there was a disaster when a big hole was left in the roof just before a big unexpected rainstorm and 1/3 of the offices are ruined. So there is lots of discomfort to go around while it all gets straightened out.
I don’t know if you’re “of a certain age” but I’m hot ALL THE TIME. I have fans all over the house in addition to the AC which just doesn’t cut it because my housemates won’t let me turn it down to meat locker temperature.
They have those portable AC things at SHarper Image that you wear around your neck like a scarf and it blows cold air and a fine mist up onto your face without getting you wet. I think I need one.
Wondering the same thing, Emma Anne. Here in LA it was June Gloom in May and now it’s July Fry in June. A very inconvenient truth! Where are you located?
I’m in Colorado. It has definitely been hotter and dryer here, year by year, for a long time. I guess you aren’t supposed to attribute local climate conditions to global warming, but it is really quite consistent and dramatic here.
Here is what I heard about weather growing up:
Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.
But I have to at least see if the Daily Show is new tonight…
Heyas O, MM, KB, SN, Brother, and anyone I missed … here’s a quick shot from yesterday of the center of the woodland garden
Yay, it was, and a pretty good one, I thought. The Ed Helms piece was priceless, and it was good to see Caroline Kennedy speaking out (if a bit meekly). Just glad to see that reruns are over at least for a bit!
Well good night, ma chère… glad to see KO in fine form tonight, though I’m beginning to wonder a bit if he is playing Ahab to O’Liely’s Moby a bit… more than once I thought KO was going for the Murrow mark. If so, I’m 10000% behind him! Even Dana Milbank was tolerable tonight, and his little bit about the movie grosses and An Inconvenient Truth was too cute by far.
Know what you mean about the short sleeps… I’m heading out earlier tonight than usual for the same reason. Plus I have an early day tomorrow. But I’m not down for the countdown for at least 30 min or so….. lol.
As you can see, my inner sports moron has been revealed again… my day pretty much was an overly busy washout, with me still feeling after effects of too much sun and exertion on Sat. But I survived to face another deadline driven day tomorrow, oh joy! But you didn’t need to hear that, lol!
Actually we spent some relaxing time looking around the garden tonight and pulling a few weeds, and staking up one of my hibiscus that wanted to fall over, then spent a nice spell on the porch appreciating the quiet neighborhood and fireflies. Hoping for this promised rain to move in later, because we really need it!
Oh, and on the Oct. 7 thing… talked w/C about it, and he’s less than enthusiastic (more shy probably), but I do think I am going to start planning for it seriously. Thinking that I’d take that Fri off, go to Chicago, meet up w/whoever is there that night, then whatever we come up with on Sat. Might even see if I could swing the Monday off too, to have a leisurely Sunday night and back on Monday… anyway… been thinking about it!
Latest radar doesn’t look too promising, though there are spots around the area… at this point I’ll believe it when it happens. If not, I’ll be out with the hose again tomorrow night.
So have you started making your plans to go to the Chicago meet up yet? hehehehe
but I just use one of those wide “fan” type attachments that I can aim up and let it fall like real rain or turn it sideways to hit certain spots. The soaker hose would save time though… next trip to Target…. maybe!
The north side always looks lush because it gets the least amount of sun and stays pretty moist. We actually trimmed the hollys a bit yesterday for the first time as they are really getting enthusiastic the last year or so (they’ve been there since 1999, so about time).
Yup, the quickie analysis I’ve been doing since Wed on ethnographic interviews for a client. It’s actually been interesting stuff since I had to work from the recorded interviews, but just not enough time to put together analysis to my satisfaction. We got the job on Wed and have to deliver results on Tuesday. Such is my world at times…
How bad was FCH today, since you didn’t mention it yet?
… and I totally understand about the not enough time to do the kind of analysis you’d like. If you don’t mind my asking, what is your field? Mine is epidemiology.
It was pretty bad … actually it was horrible … the kind of day that I’ve been tryin to forget since I got home and not think about tomorrow. LOL … <sigh>
Thought I had mentioned before, but I work in Market Research… a lot of pharma stuff is my strongest background. Lately it’s been consumer type stuff, which doesn’t interest me as much, but it pays the bills and that’s the nicest thing I can say about my job. I’ve been there too long, don’t like it, and need to move on to something else, like writing for a gardening magazine or something. I desperately need to get in touch with my contact at Meredith about that… he almost offered me a job a year or so ago and I think now would be a good time to see if that can work out.
I’ll go up on Friday night and stay through until Sunday afternoon. I’m sure others will too.
Now we need to keep ours eyes open for weekend specials. Chicago usually has good weekend deals at hotels, but it’s still 3 months away so we won’t find any yet.
Those were kind of my plans as well… though if I can eke out Monday off, I can see staying Sunday just to be a slacker and have fun in the city.
I may check w/Marriott to see how much of a discount I can get with my points on the downtown (MI Ave) hotel, but I’d sure be open to other suggestions. Maybe I should also check w/Westin as they do email me special offers frequently. In any case there’s lots of cool places in Chicago and I’m open to most (I think).
would be nice here too. There are storms west but it seems like they’ve been missing us. After all the rain this spring, who’da thought we’d want more rain? But it’s been so dry.
Though this happy yarrow doesn’t seem to mind yet, and is really bursting into bloom the past few days…
Oh, lol… forgot to mention that when we woke up this morning, C discovered a bat hanging out in the bedroom… so far this year we hadn’t been ‘visited’ yet, and it’s always a special occasion. Apparently this one was quite cooperative about getting into the shoe box and taking flight out in the back yard… Know I’m treading on probably thin ice here, but we love those lil critters. They’re so cute… but we do always usher them back outside when they do manage to make their way inside.
We don’t either, but not because they freak us out or anything… just that they are confused and couldn’t do what they need to do inside. We get them inside about 3-4 times a year and we just catch them gently and release them to do their good deeds outside, no small one being that they eat tons of mosquitoes! Ok, we think their little faces are really cute too… but we’re critter friendly as you know.
I don’t think I’d call them cute but I think they are fairly harmless. I’ve never had one in my house but find them in the cabins in MN all the time. I don’t catch them myself though, I admit. I make someone else do it.
Some people here have bat houses up in their trees. To encourage them to stay around.
We’re of one mind on those wretched tree rats, I’m sure. As far as I’m concerned they’re open season for Pepa, Rolly and whoever else is interested. As well as the cute lil bunnies that like to devour our stuff.
Yup, I’m the creep who would cancel Easter if he could, hehehe.
Mr Floppyears was eating every new green sprout in the garden — ate all my crocus down to the nibs. Now that people are out in their yards more, I haven’t seen the furry monster…
I think ours are still there, but since Pepa killed that big one back in Jan, they have been less obvious… we see them in other people’s yards but so far this year, most of the damage has been from squirrels.
Olivia, hon, you need to plant more alliums and daffodils around where the rabbits go… everyone we know seems to complain that rabbits eat their tulips but they leave ours alone. But we have daffodils near most of the tulip plantings, so we think that works.
I’m very sorry I wasn’t there Mary. Because I would have been fulminating large and loudly about my hatred of those wretched things. Yeah, the bunnies are cute, but let them eat someone else’s stuff! Squirrels are just plain nasty lil f*$@ers. Dogs are totally right to instinctively want to kill them.
militarytracy found a hurt baby squirrel and wanted to know where she should take it to save it. I told her to let it die. It’s a squirrel for goodness sake. No one agreed with me and everyone was giving her advice on saving this squirrel. I couldn’t believe it.
I hope MT doesn’t read this, but I would have called over the nearest cat to finish the job. There’s enough of those damn things around that they’re in no danger of becoming endangered, let alone scarce around here with all the trees in this city!
But I’m not a creationist… I think natural selection is a good thing. Especially when rednecks attack (each other) and cancel out the questionable genes.
maybe. I don’t have a loathing for squirrels. Unlike certain people I know, I wouldn’t by an air rifle and try to shoot them 🙂 And I don’t aim for them in my car. But if one of them is hurt I’m not going to help it. That was all I said. And it evolved into maryb — squirrel hater.
You better believe it! I’ve never gone to such extremes, but I do do an inner happy dance every time I see a flattened one on the street. One less walnut tree I’ll have to dig up out of my flower beds!
Giants are leading the Fish, 9-1 in the 7th. Not bad after a cross-country flight following a 12-inning game yesterday in New York. I’m still steamed about one item in yesterday’s game — the third-base umpire blew a call, depriving the Giants of a 5-4-7 (yes, 5-4-7) double play. Bunt with a runner on second. Third baseman Feliz fields, throws to second baseman Durham covering first. Third base vacant, so runner comes way around, but left fielder (!) Ellison sneaks in and takes the throw from Durham, putting a tag, just like an infielder (except for the out-sized butterfly net of a glove), on the runner scrambling back to third. Umpire called the runner safe, though.
Yeah, injuries are real downer. Hope he’s back soon, but I also hope he doesn’t rush it.
Meanwhile, our Little League season is finally at an end. Kid GR is lamenting not having won more games, but from my (entirely unbiased, of course) perspective, she did great. Her hitting has improved, and her play at first base has improved a lot. I’m also falling in love with the idea that she could learn to pitch. We’ll see.
Don’t fall too in love with an idea — she’s a kid. She could decide for no good reason she doesn’t want to pitch. But, having it as an idea and helping her make that decision is perfectly OK 😉
He’s out at least until after all star break. It’s bad.
On the other hand Jim Edmonds who was so hurt that he couldn’t be called upon to pinch hit on Friday and was seriously being considered for the disabled list, suddenly recovered enough to take Albert’s place at first base and hit the s***t out of the ball. As one of the sportswriters said — “It’s a Miracle!” Funny how no one can explain this.
Good point about Kid GR #1. I don’t think there’s too much danger that I’d push her into something like that if she doesn’t want to do it, but it’s a good thing to bear in mind.
I hope Edmonds’s “miracle cure” doesn’t suggest some clubhouse problem with the Cards.
Giants won, 14-2. Brad Hennessey recorded the Giants’ first four-inning save since 1990.
a. The pitcher preserves a lead of three runs or fewer for at least one full inning.
b. The pitcher enters the game with a threat at least as severe as the opponents’ having the tying run on deck (that is, two-run lead, nobody on; three-run lead, one on; four-run lead, two on; five-run lead, bases loaded). This applies even if the pitcher enters late enough not to pitch a full inning.
c. The pitcher pitches effectively for three innings or more.
it was fascinating watching the interaction when, I presume, the mother came back to the nest.
Also, how the 2 eaglets “poop” over the side…one of those WHOA!…he didn’t do that…and then a few minutes later the other one went to the same spot and did it…never thought about that aspect before…:{)
We had bats in an old house in Connecticut. Got pretty frantic in the middle of the night sometimes. Apparently, bats try to avoid human habitation, but are most likely to wander in during June (mating season) and August (young-bearing season). Good luck!
but bats I can relate to. We’re pretty much thrilled they come to visit us sometimes but make sure they make it back outside quickly. We prefer to let them do their thing in nature where they’re most comfortable and supposed to be.
lots of them up here and I get them in the house every year…finally had to put a screen on the MBR french doors cuz it was becoming a bit of a problem.
As to the rain, we got 1st dibs…looking very drought like up here w/ temps 10-20º above normal and @ 5″ behind on precip., the majority of the PM boomers have blown over pretty quickly and dumped east of us.
Ahhh, that’s better. My feet were starting to sweat in those bowling shoes. Hey, why is everyone leaving the room?
!!!!
Hi, KB!
Hi, SN!! How’s things?
How rude of me – to say hi and then disappear. Hi again.
Whew … that’s heavy … 🙂
o!! What in the world is that?
Paul Bunyan’s egg cup.
Roloson just left the game …
But the end of that game made me feel ill. To blow a 3-0 lead, to boot.
OTOH, 6 more games like that can only be good for the game.
Did you see those saves Ward was making? Cuh-razy.
I wonder if Roloson is really injured … like not-play-next-game injured.
Head coach just interviewed on post-game … Yikes!
Is not normally a recipe for Finals success.
It’s Stanley … 🙂
(cough) oh. Stanley . . . .
Of Course.
I love Stanley … 🙂
Ah. Well, he is handsome.
My DH has a picture of himself taken with it (I suppose it was visiting Denver after the Av’s won it a few years back). The picture has pride of place up in the dining room. 🙂
LOL … 😉
Hi there Emma Anne!
That’s better!
I love that face … 🙂 How’s tricks … did you have a good day?
Tricks are good. Day was OK except for still no AC in my lovely, quiet new office.
How are the heavens treating you?
No rain today … quite pleasant on the outside. Got any new flower pix?
Do you think Stanley would like it?
(I have two fans blowing hot air around and drying me up into a stick!)
(and not pink 😉 … I like the spots.
That’s not good — about the dryness — we don’t want you turning into a stick!
Wouldn’t hurt to lose a few pounds, but not dessicate into a mummy while I’m at it!
Almost looks like an orchid blooming in the snow.
I took the shot from below the flower so there is the canopy in the background.
O God, I’m so happy Jon is back from vacation to cheer me up with his cynical snarky humor! And then there will be Stephen, and then Keith, my three Musketeers!
I’m just gonna have to stay awake for this!
Does your office not have A/C or is it not working (or just not turned on)?
There is AC in the building but not in the row of offices where I am stationed, except for the bosses office since he had a special vent put in for himself. They are getting estimates to fix it. Plus there was a disaster when a big hole was left in the roof just before a big unexpected rainstorm and 1/3 of the offices are ruined. So there is lots of discomfort to go around while it all gets straightened out.
Doesn’t mean I can’t complain a little does it?
I don’t know if you’re “of a certain age” but I’m hot ALL THE TIME. I have fans all over the house in addition to the AC which just doesn’t cut it because my housemates won’t let me turn it down to meat locker temperature.
They have those portable AC things at SHarper Image that you wear around your neck like a scarf and it blows cold air and a fine mist up onto your face without getting you wet. I think I need one.
with your advanced age. It could be that you live in the South.
An AC necklace that blows mist in my face? Where where do I get one of these?
Of course you can complain. With all that going on, it would be strange if you didn’t complain.
I was hoping you would say that!
Cuz he lives in a garden!
(The Ultra Greens, Inc. Nursery…. http://www.ultragreensinc.com/ in San Fernando. I was hanging out there one day with my camera.)
As good a reason as any!
It really makes me wonder what July is going to be like since June is like July is supposed to be. We’ll really appreciate Al Gore’s movie, I suppose.
Wondering the same thing, Emma Anne. Here in LA it was June Gloom in May and now it’s July Fry in June. A very inconvenient truth! Where are you located?
same thing here in E ND. Feels very much like end of July, and out here in the country location the grass is looking more like it does in Aug.
I hate to contemplate July and Aug, might break 1936 records at the rate we’re going.
Is there a central location to see weather records? I would love to find something like that…
but no time to google due to being dialup
it will turn up for sure!
Heyas O, MM, KB, SN, Brother, and anyone I missed … here’s a quick shot from yesterday of the center of the woodland garden
firefoxers know the right clickie drill, hehe
Back in a bit, I threaten…
Nice, IVG! Opulent greenery….
Yay, it was, and a pretty good one, I thought. The Ed Helms piece was priceless, and it was good to see Caroline Kennedy speaking out (if a bit meekly). Just glad to see that reruns are over at least for a bit!
… and KO is back too. I guess we can’t begrudge these fabulous celebrities their fabulous looooooong vacations!
Nice to have them all back.
Well, I’m down for the countdown I think….. LOL. Only 4 hours of sleep and no nap…. I hope I can actually stay asleep long enough to make it matter!
We’ll know soon!
But I’m not down for the countdown for at least 30 min or so….. lol.
Losing in the 9th. Not a nice thing. <sigh>
no chance of comeback?
I should have said lost. Finished. Ken Griffey hit a 3 run homer.
Oh well.
won a weird looking silver cup? Am I up on tonight’s sports news?
Are you weeping in your beer Mary or was that a good thing?
(that’s hockey). Baseball was a loss, but I’m not crying. Mostly irritated that they blew it in the 9th.
How as your day IVG?
As you can see, my inner sports moron has been revealed again… my day pretty much was an overly busy washout, with me still feeling after effects of too much sun and exertion on Sat. But I survived to face another deadline driven day tomorrow, oh joy! But you didn’t need to hear that, lol!
Actually we spent some relaxing time looking around the garden tonight and pulling a few weeds, and staking up one of my hibiscus that wanted to fall over, then spent a nice spell on the porch appreciating the quiet neighborhood and fireflies. Hi … 🙂 Sounds like a nice night spent enjoying the garden. Do you think it’s going to rain?
Latest radar doesn’t look too promising, though there are spots around the area… at this point I’ll believe it when it happens. If not, I’ll be out with the hose again tomorrow night.
So have you started making your plans to go to the Chicago meet up yet? hehehehe
With all your lushness, you’d never notice it. Then all you’d have to do is turn on the tap … 🙂
but I just use one of those wide “fan” type attachments that I can aim up and let it fall like real rain or turn it sideways to hit certain spots. The soaker hose would save time though… next trip to Target…. maybe!
The north side always looks lush because it gets the least amount of sun and stays pretty moist. We actually trimmed the hollys a bit yesterday for the first time as they are really getting enthusiastic the last year or so (they’ve been there since 1999, so about time).

You seem pretty tame in comparison … LOL … I think IVG would ride up on the sidewalk to hit one. 🙂
You better believe it! I’ve never gone to such extremes, but I do do an inner happy dance every time I see a flattened one on the street. One less walnut tree I’ll have to dig up out of my flower beds!

I saw your post yesterday about the 5-4-7 double play. That would have been very cool to see — even if the umpire blew the call.
I’m glad someone is excited about their team. I’m in mourning over Albert.
Yeah, injuries are real downer. Hope he’s back soon, but I also hope he doesn’t rush it.

I’m sure you’re a great dad and you two will figure it out together 🙂
Does that mean that the giants usually have saves in the last inning? (or at least the last three innings?)
Usually the last inning. A pitcher gets a save if
4c is a rare event any more.
I see IVG,O, maryb and growthrate…miss anyone?
Have excitin’ plans tonight?
Got intrigued by the eagle-cam…first time I’d seen the parent in the nest; fascinating stuff.
… the last one had sound and you could really hear them squawking and chirping … I agree, it is fascinating.
And at least you’re moving … 🙂
it was fascinating watching the interaction when, I presume, the mother came back to the nest.
Also, how the 2 eaglets “poop” over the side…one of those WHOA!…he didn’t do that…and then a few minutes later the other one went to the same spot and did it…never thought about that aspect before…:{)
LOL … The last time I tried to watch, it wouldn’t load.
Well you missed our visitor bat, but he has long since been ushered outside. How’s tonight in the foothills? Will you please zap some rain this way?
Ms and I were just mentioning today the lawn here in the boonies looks more like end of July mid Aug, bone dry.
Only good thing about the unseasonably warm and dry weather is virtually no mosquitos.
And we lost dada somewhere … so if you see him, grab him.
I’m heading off to bed. Olivia, do you want me to open a new cafe before I leave?
I’ll go pop one up now.
OK.
Good night all.
ok, that was bad… May pansies and delphiniums dance through your dreams, delighting you with a deluge of delicious colors….
Night, fellow squirrel hater.
