Watch as Freddie Hubbard tries in vain to make his head explode while Joe Henderson, mere feet away, looks on in horror, fearing that this might be the last time he gets to wear his white dinner jacket in public. Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock, positioned farther from the potential disaster, appear less concerned. Inexplicably, Joe Carter, who is also in danger of losing the use of his white jacket, just looks bored. Perhaps he has another one at home?
Outtasight!
Another awesome clip, Chris, thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks for the link! Although, as a trumpet player I can’t watch people playing w/out getting a sympathetic teeth tingle … weird eh? š
Keep posting these great memories. From 1969 to 1976 I was at the “LIGHTHOUSE” in Hermosa almost every night. It was always a surprise to see who would join in or even who would be playing on any given night.
As a friend of the owner of the oldest longest continuously open Jazz club
in the US [?] I got to listen to some of the greatest jazzmen of all times, even if I may not have appreciated who they were at the time. I love your choices & look forward to more. I believe this is the third time you treat us to great musicians & hope you`ll make it a habit.
Thanks
Thank you. That was a great piece.
yes.
Cool … appreciate your serving up the delicious jazz fare.
Nice work posting one of a handful of jazz tunes that I actually know. Good lord, after that solo I wonder if the trumpet player had any non-burst blood veins in his eyes. (I was looking)
All that being said, watch as I demonstrate my utter lack of clue to all the lovely readers on this site, Is Canteloupe Island the name of the song?
Yes, that’s the name. Freddie Hubbard actually did blow out his upper lip in 1992, so your fears watching him play are not groundless.
Cocaine.
Worst drug in the world.
Bet on it.
Eyewitness testimony. Been there. Stoppped doing that. Freddie didn’t.
Sad sad sad sad sad sad SAD!!!
And he wasn’t alone.
Not by a LONG shot.
Still isn’t.
The CIA/PermaGov drug of choice for polluting healthy cultures.
AIDS of the soul.
What happened to Freddie and about 50 other great players was what scared me straight…. a few years their junior…and was a large part of what eventually radicalized me to the point where I am now.
Witness.
I was there.
R.I.P., Hilton Ruiz.
And a BUNCH of others.
R.I.P.
Bet on it.

I’ve been in such a recovering musician mode for the last five years that I didn’t even know he was gone. Nasty slap of reality on a Saturday morning.
In the late 90’s while attending college I took a jazz history course. My teacher who was a jazz lover and musician had managed to get Freddie Hubbard to appear at our school for a performance. Sad to say Hubbard had arrived and left the area without peforming. Teacher did his best to explain it away, but turned out Hubbard had left because he couldn’t play without his “medicine”.
holy poop! i LOVE cantelope island. what an excellent song. yeah! š
Wow, Chris, what a great thing to start off with in the middle of the night! Thanks!
