You go up in a tram that travels up the leg, and it’s made up of little pod shaped cars that seat 5 people.
Here’s a picture of people in one:
Then, when you get to the top, there’s not much there but some space to walk around and teeny tiny windows that you have to lean waaaaaay over to look out of:
Thanks so much for the photos! That said, I’m a bit claustrophobic and don’t like heights. The odds are I would not go in a tiny pod car to the top of the arch.
But the area under the Arch is not like a tunnel. It’s huge. There’s the museum, a gift shop and a big open area with a fountain in the middle, ticket booths and two theaters. They rent the center part out for receptions and I think it holds just under 1,000 people for a cocktail reception.
1,000 people trapped between the forces of gravity and the earth’s crust. 1,000 people not afraid of being crushed like bugs under tons of earth and concrete and having the foot of the arch come slicing down like some ungodly spear… <shudder>
Yeah, it probably has a mirror image underground of what ya see above. Ya just have to find the secret passage way. Which our interpid maryb most likely discovered in her wayward youth.
it would be big enough inside have anything like that going on. ‘Course I’ve only seen photos, so interesting to see what assumptions will get you sometimes.
but it wasn’t built until the early 1960’s. I remember when it was being built my dad took me down to look at the site — I think I was only about 4 years old. It’s one of my earliest memories.
but it still won’t be me. I think the last time I posed near the base of the Arch I was 10 years old. And I’m pretty sure my mom hasn’t put those pictures on the internet. 🙂
but not since that orig. temp structure and the expo project…it was published in one of the Arch mags…very cool. Too bad they didn’t put the pics in the web article…or did I miss a link?
I have a friend who rescues birds. Mostly ducks. And he has some parrots. I think it would be cool to have a raven adopt ya… but I couldn’t bare to keep one in a cage or something. But I’ve had thoughts of being an old crusty geezer lady and having a raven perched on my shoulder. I’d teach it dirty words. 🙂 And it’d tell me how lovely I was.
I`ve had them before & they are a very smart bird. I had four from the same nest.
Heckle, Jeckyl, Blacky & black jack. Presently I have one in my aviary that lives with a green Nanday Conure. They sleep together on a perch. I`m trying to relocate them in a permanent wildlife reserve. They both suffered broken wings within a few months of each other. I had them treated at the Vet`s & now it`s up to me. They both could live for 25 yrs. or so & that`s a real long commitment. I interact with them as little as possible in hopes they would do well in a preserve, but they will never be able to fly.
I already have 5 rescued parrots & it`s getting a little crowded.
I just found a post to me on those Harley`s. It must sound like “ya done that, twice”, but here`s a pic of my 37 Flathead. i sold it last year, but still have my trusty knucklehead. That`s why my other username on Reef Central is 37 FLATHEAD.
Here we go again. I also had a 1941 four/five WLC.
The four/five is the cubic inch displacement which is basically 750CC`s
The one you posted may be a WLA. The models were 45cubic inch WL`s. The C in mine designates Canada whereas the A designates America.
Pleeease, disregard an ex girlfriend stalker from hell leaning on my bike. http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6424/my37flathead7wz.jpg
Thanks I was just trying to do a google search on em to see if Portland area is one of their areas. Never thought to do that before LOL. I’m such a dork.
There’s a few neat books I’m going to have to look into.
But I’m pretty damn sure that my birds… have been Ravens.
Nope no yotes.. yets. But me and SallyCat while down in Eugene came across a big white dog that was party husky and part wolf. Thing came up to my elbows and it was only 14 months old.
You know when you go to a family gathering & there`s some obnoxiuos
“know it all” who can`t put one over on the adults, but lords it over the kids.
Well I want to know who is this marron scolding my little girl, & who invited him. What a clown,,& Don`t You Dare Touch My Princess. http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/876/clownbuddscn81801lx.jpg
The bloom scent is awesome. It has to atract a certain moth to be pollenated, so it has a scent that`s simply amazing.
I have quite a nice collection of photos of these cactus blooms. When I first found it, it was about 2 ft. tall & I didn`t even know it flowered. A few yrs. passed & I noticed the smell of the flowers & found it like in the photos. I now have over a dozen, ranging in height from over 9ft. down to 2ft. People have tried to plant the offspring with no success till I figured out how to plant them. I`ve never planted any of mine, they grow when they know, but when the bloom stem falls off, one would think to plant it bloom side up. In reality you plant the flower side down to be assured of a beauty. They don`t branch [so far] but grow about 2″ in diameter & straight up. I seen a nice security fence with these planted about 8″ apart down a property line.
Anyway here`s the ghost car that can`t be found when it`s speeding through the Malibu canyons. http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8205/ghostriderdscn81135ao.jpg
Danged if I can remember why I rejected this last night.
Actually, after looking at the blossoms of the various snowberry plants I just can’t find the white blossoms, and mine here are not bell shaped like those in the photos. So it could be in family just haven’t found the right one yet.
but I haven’t seen enough of the plant to be sure…I don’t recall the stems being red, and they are a very pronounced red on the ones here…we’ll see, there can be a lot of variety in native plants that have adapted to diff climes.

A nice, spacious cafe with no teetering glass buildings.
BTW, DJ, I can’t believe you went in the Space Needle. I wouldn’t go — the thing groans when it’s windy.
I went up in the space needle. It was cool. And I liked going on the monorail to get to it.
The monorail is cool.
I didn’t know you could go in the arch — what’s in there?
Yes, you can go up in the Arch

Thanks so much for the photos! That said, I’m a bit claustrophobic and don’t like heights. The odds are I would not go in a tiny pod car to the top of the arch.
If you’re claustrophobic and don’t like heights, you probably wouldn’t like it.
You could wait at the bottom — there’s a museum of westward expansion under it (underground — but not claustrophobic) that’s very cool.
Underground? So, um, how far? My chest gets tight in tunnels.
Who knew I was such a bundle of neuroses? I swear I usually function just fine.
um, completely underground.
But the area under the Arch is not like a tunnel. It’s huge. There’s the museum, a gift shop and a big open area with a fountain in the middle, ticket booths and two theaters. They rent the center part out for receptions and I think it holds just under 1,000 people for a cocktail reception.

(hey, maybe DJ and I should collaborate on a travel guide)
You should write novels 🙂
OK, you can stay above ground and just look at the river. Or turn around and look at the city.
That sounds lovely. Is there a snack stand?
Yes, if you walk down the grand staircase to the levee, there are all kinds of riverboat snack places.
It’s a lot of steps though.
Jeebus Cripes! What sick and twisted mind invented this Arch?!?!?!
😀
My first thought, too, but I was trying to be nice. I mean, there’s room in St. Louis, right? They could’ve just built a museum.
Yeah, it probably has a mirror image underground of what ya see above. Ya just have to find the secret passage way. Which our interpid maryb most likely discovered in her wayward youth.
Hey, I think that’s the plot of Dan Brown’s next book — the St. Louis Code.
I feel like one of those Wonka brats.
“What is this, a freak out?!” 🙂
it would be big enough inside have anything like that going on. ‘Course I’ve only seen photos, so interesting to see what assumptions will get you sometimes.
Me, too, NDD — I thought it was purely decorative.
Don’t you two know that’s actually a handle to the earth so Superman can use it for weightlifting?
🙂
A man standing next to the base:
Hey we can’t see you good enough!!! Bummer!! 🙂
Either you’re very tiny or that arch still doesn’t seem big enough to have a vatorthingy and basement dohickey.
Don’t forget the sardine pods.
Yeah… and those pods! ACK!
I betcha, Izzy, it’s the same guy who made the Seattle library… or is related to him or something.
Shivers. 🙂

the sheer creepiness of the reflective siding. That in and of itself would cause vertigo.
that’s not me. I said it was a man. I just googled for pictures, I don’t know who it is.
Aw man… I was even getting up and physically looking closer at the screen to try and see ya 🙂 Squintin my eyes, too.

The Arch… I figure I have no business even standing near that thing 🙂
It sways less than 1 inch in 20 mph winds and is built to sway up to 18 inches.
You can feel it moving when you’re up at the top.
That was a bizarre “elevator” ride…way cool.
The Houses Bamboo Built

guess they don’t include them in the downloadables.
and check it out. Thanks for the heads up, I rarely read the Utne R.
these other two articles. Diff topic, but very interesting concepts involved.

here # 2
Hey, I had to be sure you were still here. Comin’ right up then.
space needle.
After having been some 70-90 ft up a small tower, (about 1 ft triagle), and swaying the wind, I think I could handle the space needle.
Wheeeee!
I was little I didn’t know any better. And it was long before I blew out my eardrum.
It was a raven. It was BIGGER than a crow.

and smart as hell. Have a lot of them up here and they winter in town…torment the dogs mercilessly…them and the Magpies. Very entertaining.

It could say, “Fascists I ‘ate! Fascists I ‘ate!”
Crows or Ravens?
I’m thinking Ravens simply because… well cause I dig em 🙂
I’d say both, since some places have one and not the other, like ND has no ravens that I know of, unless they’re out in the western part of the state.
I doubt any area would be left out of the opportunity for “good medicine”
I think black cats are good mojo, too. I seem to attract the night shades.
coyotes are roaming through your back yard.
Then I tell ya my hair will be standing on end for sure!!
Nope no yotes.. yets. But me and SallyCat while down in Eugene came across a big white dog that was party husky and part wolf. Thing came up to my elbows and it was only 14 months old.
I knew Chris wouldn’t be here yet.
ha!
He’s sitting around trying to guess what I’m going to write next.
trying to think of what you’re going to write next.
🙂
it was just a skeeto. (Mosquito)
Kitty smacked it down and licked it off the floor.
seat belt on this office chair. Now I know for sure I will.
yeah, well she then wonders why I don’t take kindly to her sipping out of my waterglass.
Look Cat, I love you, but I just saw you lick off bloody bug guts off the floor.
Cat: And your point is??
GUHHH
my eyes are getting all watery-like fer tryin so hard.
Either that last photo was of a MIDGET to get us off the track of the real mystery of the St. Louis Code or this woman is a GIANT!!!
Curiouser and curiouser as Malice Alice would say.
Fess up, Mary! We’re on to you. Uh huh!
and this woman is really, really strong – she’s holding it up.
I think Olivia is the one who should visit — at least she’d like to take photo’s of it. 🙂

I think we posted at the same time 🙂
or post …
LOL!
great minds …
One of my cactus is blooming as we breath. It takes about 90 mins. to fully open, then by tomorrow midday, it will die. Here`s a sequence in three photos taken within 80 mins.

That is amazing … the last one is spectacular! I LOVE it … 🙂
it reminds me of a little girls jewelry box that you open and it reveals a tiny, twirling ballerina inside
Thank you Knucklehead!
While I was waiting for the blossom to open, I didn`t waste time.
Here`s the same spider bloom.
Cactus: A few years ago I decided to put a bright spotlight on the not yet opened bud. I kept the light on it for about 2 hrs. to make it seem like it was still daylight.
I then filmed the opening which was speedier than it would have been without the spotlight. I then compressed the 1 hr. film into a three min.
short. It actually was very smooth & not jerky as one would see a time lapse of a bloom that took much longer.

I love these flowers — if I was a little green spider, I’d definitely want to hang out on a lusciuos purple flower that had sugar-dipped inner bits.
I had no idea they bloomed that fast.

That`s it. Pretty wierd when you can get your hands on liquid nitrogen.

blossoms here
keep in mind the blossoms are each only about 1/4″ across, it might be the magnification of the macro throwing ya off the trail…
Awwwwright! Mystery berries! Who can we get to eat em??
I’d likely already know what they are, ha!
This is driving me crazy(er) … 🙂
Well whatever they are I doubt they’d make a good addition to a fruit margarita.
Snow Berry maybe?
I thought I checked that one last night and ruled it out, but now I forget why. I’ll have to go look at my ND flora links from last night.
pea size…non-poisonous.
Another guess would be Pokeweed……berries turn purple on it…and it’s poisonous
Not tryin’ to be rude…NDD’s got me huntin’ for berries, but I’m not doin to well…where’e ya go?

else that makes sense…pokeweed is only in the south I think too…it’s the stuff they make ‘poke salad’ annie outta.
I don’t think Chokeritas would be a big hit. 🙂
Okay, I’m scootin off the computer. Take care!
Sweet Raven Dreams, my friend.

Do we get to go to bed now???
I got a take an auto in for brakes tomorrow, 2 hr job. ACK!
I never even got to talk w/ any of you … You had me working all night.
Good luck tomorrow w/ the car.
Here’s a final link
Or are you asking for something else … 😉
Go on … get to bed. Good luck tomorrow and see you later.
ha ha, don’t get me started on any new “topics”
Night
I’m working on it!!! Nightowlitis, ya know. Just hard to give up on the evening, especially when there’s others still partying on. 😉
Do you think this is it? I just read your comment below …
but I haven’t seen enough of the plant to be sure…I don’t recall the stems being red, and they are a very pronounced red on the ones here…we’ll see, there can be a lot of variety in native plants that have adapted to diff climes.
and this place is over 130 comments long and loading like a slow freight…alas, tis time to say goodnight.
Have a good sleep and tomorrow you’re one day closer to the wkend.
Be well, catch ya on the flip.
Peace
Yeah, that was the toughest one yet. I’ll have to think of some sort of nice reward for all your hard work.
Night night you guys.
🙂
Good night!

Well, folks, it’s been fun, but I’m going to have to go to sleep. Thanks for all the laughs. See you tomorrow.
Sweet non-crazy building dreams, Izzy!!!
Thanks, DJ — you, too! When the time comes.
I think that
yawnnnnnn
I think that time
whoooooo I’m sleepy
I think that time has…

come.
Thanks for a multitude of ROTFLMOs tonight!!
good night Izzy.
And good night everyone, I’m turning in too.
