I have been very envious of all the meet-up diaries that have been written in the last few months. Envious because I don’t think that I’ll be able to make any of the meet-ups this year. That was until the very little gears in my brain started turning and I began to ask my fellow Michiganders if they would be interested in getting together. So far, the response has been positive, but limited. I know that I haven’t had contact with all the Michigan froggies -so this shout-out is for you. Actually, this is for anyone who would like to come to our lovely state for a weekend. I’m pretty sure that Andrew will be at the picnic.
From what I know of our home bases, I thought that Kensingston Metro Park might be a good location. If people are okay with that, all we need to do is to nail down a date. I hope to come up with a date that accommodates the most people. Please pick the date below that best fits into your schedule. I’m probably missing something, so feel free to tell me in your comments. Please recommend this diary so it stays up for a couple of days.
Hopefully this diary will be here tomorrow. I need to check with my better half, and she is not here tonight. I’ll put my vote on the evening cafe Monday, if this diary is not here by then. Thanks for the effort to organize us Toni!
You could hotlist the diary to save access to it.
I can try to make it the 13th, but the 20th looks better for me. I only manage to check in here every couple of days, would greatly appreciate email letting me know what the final date/time is (skmel@sbcglobal.net). I’ll do my absolute best to make it (though I may be tempted to wander–Kensington has a very good disc golf course…).
I’ll e-mail you in a couple of days with a final date.
Thanks.
Too bad Aug. 12th isn’t one of the choices. If it was, we could maybe have a conference call meet-up between MI and MN. Oh well… hope you guys have a blast!!
A conference call would have been funny. Have fun at your meet-up.
I am fairly sure I can make August 13. I’ll be out of the state for all the other weekends in August. If we push it back to September, I’m out of town for the first two weekends, and probably Sept. 23 & 24.
So even though I voted for August 13, please don’t plan around my schedule by any means…summers are hectic!
Thanks for voting. I’m pulling for the 13th, too. Everything else is close to the start of school, for both me and and my husband.
I’m going to abstain from voting, since it’s not very likely I’ll make it out. August is shaping up to be the busiest month of my life! However, when you guys pick a date and place I’ll see if it might be possible to make it down. Either way, I hope you guys all make it and have a good time. Toni, next time I’m in the Motor City I hope we can at least have a mini-meetup!
Road trips to the Motor City are always welcome. Hey throw a recommend on the diary, just so it stays up for a while. Thanks.
Rec’d.
Check your calendar and pick a date.
No preference actually. (Assuming that I can get my car fixed!)
I hope the car problem is too serious. Would the Car Talk guys start asking you about new cars?
You hope it’s serious? Thanks!
BTW, It is a major one!
New cars? W/me on SSI? LOL
Opps, not too serious.
Toni: The 13th will work for us, then the 26th, then the 19th. So far, Sept is clear. Looks like the 13th is looking good so far?
Lucky 13.
Hi, Toni, thanks for putting up the diary. The 13th would otherwise be fine with me, but as it happens, I will have to work around taking my husband to the airport and I don’t know his flight schedule at the moment. I will come if I possible can if it is one the 13th, however. Kensington is not that far from the airport.
My 1st then has to be the 20, then 19th, 27, 26, then September. As school starts with a fury for me on the 28th, I’d like to do this before school starts, too. (husband may be facing a DPS strike – I hope not!!) but will otherwise start teaching when you do).
We can, of course, do an easy short-notice meeting after school starts in Detroit almost anytime. .
I’ll check back later in the evening to see what response you’ve gotten.
This is what I get for not keeping up with local news. What’s going on?
We’ve lost several thousand more students and we expect that the Board will ask us for a pay cut. I fully expect our benefits to be cut. So far, there is no word on the negotiations. The District changed their lead negotiator recently and the DFT team has been in Boston at the AFT convention. I don’t expect anything to happen until the school opening deadline nears. The wild card is the newly elected Board members. Who knows what will happen with them.
This might be a grenade to throw out there and I’m sorry, but the only way to chip away at the charter schools that are killing our districts is to organize them. That will take the dollars signs out of the the management companies eyes. They ain’t going away.
The 13th IS a good day after all. I should never do calendars in my head. The following weekend, either day, would be the second choices, and so on.
