How are we staying cool this evening?? I’m having a cold Labatt’s Blue myself.
I’m sitting in an air conditioned house not daring to to outside.
A beer would be nice too though.
that helps…
I just gotta ask.
How hot is it Manny?
hovering around 110 all week, I hear it’s supposed to “cool down” to 101 through the weekend with monsoon storms in the evenings. The two-fingered driving shall continue through the forseeable future.
Hi FM et al
I always wondered if those things you put up in your windows help at all.
Than again, two fingered driving is an art. Not a very safe art, but an art just the same. 🙂
help in the sense that you’re prone to only sustain 2nd degree burns rather than 3rd when you get in and try to drive without opening the windows and doors to let the oven effect heat out. Dash mats are a must or you’ll have a cracked dash within a couple of years.
So that’s what happened to my old car in Texas.
Well you stay under the ac and only venture out when needed.
Whereabouts? Calif or Arizona or ???
We’re off to the library to go and get our card and what a beaut it is, too!
[Our library http://www.beavertonlibrary.org/aboutlibrary/imagegallery/images/interior2.jpg}
I took this a few minutes ago.
Albert just ate some carrot tops, which is his first food since I brought him home yesterday. Since he’s at least a pound over weight, we’re not terribly worried that he’ll starve to death before he gets his appetite back.
Hot hazy, or cool hazy?
Hi keepinon, it’s Winter here Downunder. And about 45 degrees and raining at the moment.
These are riding ponies. I just made this composite up a few hrs ago.

That’s really cool.
The horses are on a shelf on top of a cabinet in my other office.
The sky is the ceiling above the horses. The mountains I went out & shot to meet my needs for this pic. They are about 2 ft. long & part of a rocky bank next to the driveway.
Not the quite the proper reaction I’m sure but where’s the lake?
The lake is reflecting the mountains in the background, although I may have omitted to give you the secret decoder ring that allows one to see it.
You must submit a form to apply for a registration for the ring.
where is the lake physically located — I was interested because it looks like some place I’d like to hike to.
I mentioned that this was a composite I made from parts I shot in & around the house. The background mountain range is just a few ft of rock 50 ft outside my office. Sorry about the humor. hahaharr
Well the truth is out — I can be scammed by anything that has jaggies.
If that`s the case with you, hike on out & I`ll take you to the submarine races.
Black moves: mate in two.
Don’t know how to say it in the proper code, but #1 Black queen takes the white queen forcing the white king to move one to the right. All that is left to do is get the black knight out of the way of the rook??
If I’m right, how would you describe the action properly??
Sorry
I could be wrong but if it`s black`s move Knight goes to C3. It looks too simple.
knight to c3, white queen takes black knight, black queen takes rook and checkmate.
forgot the white knight.
That, or my solution:
…QXf3+
NXf3 (or RXf3) Nc3++
There are many ways to skin this cat.
Translation of the above into English:
Black queen takes white queen at f3, delivers check
White Knight or White Rook takes black queen
Black Knight to c3, which is checkmate because of the Rook.
But, if the White Knight takes Black Queen, that opens the square in front of the White King to move out of check.
Your moves are not guarenteed to force the check in two, because White has the option of the Knight to remove the check by the Black Queen, which continues the game at least a few more moves.
Wrong.White Queen takes Black knight.
keepion was onto something still:
…Qf3+
NXf3 Nc3++
Not, apparently, if you’re playing me.
OK, I’m drunk here, but how is that not mate in one?
Black queen takes White queen king moves right black queen moves left one. mate.
I haven’t played in a long time, but could it be….
black knight to c3, check, white queen takes black knight, black queen to e2.
Ya’ll might have said that already, I don’t know.
Looks like I was 45 min. too late. Which is pretty much the story of my chess playing.
Hi Jim. I wasn’t sure if I was right or not. Thanks.
Black knight to c3 – check
White queen to c3
Black queen to e2 – mate
Got a question. What up with the big comment with all the question marks showing up all over the place?
Family Man: If you are referring to mine, I guess I just get carried away with??? sometimes.
Hi just got back. Nope not you. I guess it nothing.
I just finished a little housework and yes, a little schoolwork.
Hi Toni. Haven’t talked to you in awhile.
How’re ya doing?
Pretty good FM. I’m glad to see that you’re still awake. How are you doing?
I’m doing pretty good. I was looking through the other nights cafe and saw a picture of Andrew getting some sun. Cute as could be.
This has been an amzing summer with the little guy.
schoolwork — oh the horror, the horror!
I’ve been makin an outline of how I’ll teach the material this year, so it isn’t too terrible. I’m planned through the end of September.
What’s up with the pony rides? Did you get SN to get you a pony?
What? If anyone deserves a pony around here it’s me.
No you can’t have a pony SN.
I don’t like you when you’re assertive FM.
OK you can have two ponies. 🙂
Now that is evidence of a softie.
I thought that maybe Andi asked you after I told her last night that I would not give her a pony.
She knew better than to ask me if even old softie Toni said no.
Well, maybe if you’re not quite 3 feet tall and weigh only 25 lbs., but even he can’t have a pony.
can I please, huh, huh, please, everybody else has one, can I, please, I’ll take care of it, you won’t have to do anything, really, really, please, can I, please.
That’s what you always say and then I’m the one who has to clean up after him.
The good thing about being a mom is that I can get all the pets now and make the kids take care of them. 🙂
My mother told me that women had kids so there’d be someone to do all the things they hate to do (as she handed me the dust rag).
I know I give my kids lots of guff… but the one thing they are super about is taking care of the furry family members.
Each in their own way of course. But they do the feeding, watering, cleaning, shit patrol all that.
We have kitty, Shinobi, and two piggies, Cooki and Herbi. We used to have a ton of fish. My son is thinking of getting another pet, he doesn’t know if a rat, or bird. He’s “looking into it” and has been for over a year. 🙂
Danni on the other hand… when we were looking for a house, she wanted one with a big old barn out back so that way we could to the no kill clinics from the papers and rescue cats. They’d be outdoorsy so as Kitty wouldn’t get all butt hurt and jealous. 🙂
and he’s too far away to do me any good. 🙁
Jim’s been doing school work, too but then he started doing it a day or two after school is finished — not that he’s obsessed or anything.
I took the rest of June off, but I started back up once we got home from my parent’s. I’d rather get ahead in the planning game than try to plan and grade papers.
These belong to our friends down the road.
That library ROCKS!!!!
And Shhhhhhhhhhhh it’s very quiet for once this week in the house… both kids are READING! They are voracious readers, but this library had so much. Ususally theyhad to use wilinet to pre-order books.. but when the books are right there on the shelf.. oh man! And we got a book bag and signed up for the summer reading program. Kids can win an iPod and bunches of other cool shitola.
They had an entire graphic novel section… the kids went el wiggo!
I picked out two Kansas books 🙂 Twilight and Chili Con Carne. 🙂
I miss my home library. 🙁 They had CDs and DVDs and even major works of framed art that you could hang up in your home for a month at a time before returning. It was so cool.
Here we have a teeny little branch library.
Yup that’s what our old one was – a branch. I just love the library. 🙂 Yup they had CDs and DVDs too. Wesley was looking up the Beach Boys, too. LOL
in our town have really nice play ares for kids. The one that we can walk to is pretty small, but it has a pretty nice selection of everything. Andrew loves books.
Spouse is home. Gonna’ run off. 🙂
Night
I hope there’s something good in that lunch pail after working up an appetite from dancing a jig on the sidewalk.
Night everyone.
Night, FM — sorry I missed you.
What happened to the cafe? the drunkeness? the debauchery? Jeesh — I go away for a few days and everyone’s going to the library and playing chess.
You aren’t here and maryb is on vacation — SN can’t do everything.
Wow — I had no idea we were so instrumental in setting the tone. Apologies, SN!
I’m getting sleepy so it’s time to go. Good night everyone.
Night, TT — sleep well.
Make Izzy happy and misbehave.
Night, Andi — raunchy dreams!
with myself. I ate dinner at Benihana’s with friends then joined them afterwards for dessert at a gelato place. It was good, but ugh….
hi NDD. I’m fading for the night so hopefully some other nightowls will start to circle and liven this place up abit. Quiet day all around.
Well, next day after that comment I was drinking this Prairie Fume’wine my uncle brought from Wisconsin, very very good. (First one on third row.)
looks good. I bought a bottle from Spain earlier, Sangre de Toro. Can’t wait to try it 🙂
G’night NDD, Knuckle et al
Somewhere outside.
In the erratic orbit of KARLECT , the result of it`s binary star system, dawn is near. After seventeen earth days since the setting of the Sodium star, the CU star, or copper star begins it`s 9 day rule of light as a trio of Movans furtively move towards a possible prey site. Although similar in appearance only, Movans are extremely different. Always three in number, it has been speculated that the big reddish ones are in fact the only real biologically correct member of this species. Accompanied by two bioloids whose origins are lost in the mist of time, the “RED” at 44ft. long is a perfect example of an evolutionary end, for it is superbly well adapted for the harsh aridity of it`s adopted planet. The bioloids, biological/mechanical creatures, for an unknown reason, have no other purpose, it would seem, than to protect at all costs, the safety of the RED.
The chemical patches, mostly dark brown to black, on the backs of the bioloids, act as chemical sponges, which absorb sodium, deadly to the Red, when the Sodium star is in it`s daylight phase. If caught in the open, on the dunes of the white silicon planet, the Red would blister & burn if not for the ever attentive “Loids” who cover the Red with their bodies, using their chemical sponged dorsal plates to counteract any adverse reaction.
This ill predicted circumstance, an almost random effect of the binary star system, does not occur on a regular basis & rarely at that, which mandates the loids ever present vigilance.
The Movans move with the shifting sands, closer, ever closer, towards their needed sustenance; Calcium, found only inside the strange wrappings of the bipedal troopers, descended from a mother ship, now in geosynchronous orbit in the greening space above.

Those critters do sort of look like they came from another universe!
Doin’ any more on the stereoptic effect?
I do some when I come accross a new way to look at things.
This little story is one of the ones I do for a little friend of mine. He`s autistic & I`ve known him since he was three. He`s 9 now & although he doesn`t interact with many people, his mom is always happy to see him grab my hand & lead me off to show me his inventions & constructions. I opened a username for him on his computer in one of my community websites I`m on. He constantly delights in regaling me with fictional tales
that are the product of an unusually lucid immagination. This is my friend Shane. He insisted I take a shot of him with a “Morey Eel”.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/8766/myfriendshanedscn0090hb0.jpg
what an expression of blissful glee Shane has! You are fortunate indeed to have such a friend. And he, you!
looks like we’re all set till tomorrow. G’night cafefolk.
While I was with Shane today, I was shooting a tank I installed 4 yrs. ago at his house. For every pic I took, he explained every characteristic of that particular subject fish. When I was done & about to leave, is when he insisted I shoot one more pic of his eel. He`ll be coming over in a few days to see my dinosaurs. This Lionfish, he was particularily adamant about my being extremely cautious with, due to it`s venomous dorsal spines.
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/4060/volitanslionfishdscn0080hy2.jpg
ya wouldn’t want to mess with.
Your “tank shots” are certainly alien to my experience. I doubt there’s been anything like that in this state since some 400 million years ago.
