wanted to thank you again for writing up that diary last week. The only way the info on that type of stuff will get out is if we keep writing about it. (((Izzy)))
Oh, and thanks again for the gofugyourself linkage too, it cracked me up for over an hour. I’m not a big fashion person, I wear whatever, but the commentary was hilarious.
Hopefully Kamakhya will check in, she just had an earthquake.
in the Oakland area, I believe. I’ve never been in an earthquake but survived a few tornadoes so I’m sufficiently freaked out for life regarding harsh weather/natural disasters.
Fafblog is great too, but they haven’t been updating as regularly as before. We need more comedic blogs in lefty blogistan.
So glad to hear everything’s ok! I was born and raised in LA, so I was sort of used to it. I’ll tell you though, I’ve never felt one as bad as the one that hit Seattle a few years ago — it was scary.
I read that you got the strength right but that it was farther away than you thought. Is the guessing game something everyone does? I can see how it would relieve some of the stress.
People are amazed at how I can judge these, but really, the earth is just not meant to move that way! It is like a bad acid trip! :>)
I can feel an earthquake that no one else can. Every bump, wiggle and wump makes me think earthquake first. I didn’t grow up here, so maybe that plays a factor.
I have yet to meet another like me, but then most of my associates are long term or lifelong Kalifornians. They all just shrug likes its a train passing or something.
I just freeze and say “Oh shit”. :>)
I figured I couldn’t be the only one who tried to guess the magnitude. It’s like anything under a 6 is ok and I don’t need to worry. I came right after Loma Prieta, so I haven’t experienced anything over a 6, but I definitely don’t want to! :>)
Hugs back to you Kama! We made it through this one.
I used to enjoy feeling the power of earthquakes in our neck of the woods, until Loma Prieta.
My meeting tonight ended really fast as everyone wanted to get home right away. I confess I was one of the people who didn’t even feel it. It really depends on where I’m at and what I’m doing. Quakes at night, if I’m in bed I usually wake up. I used to live on a busy street where diesel buses rumbled by all day and night and shook the building. I felt an “earthquake” every week and then it would turn out not to be one.
I’ve come to discover that earthquakes have their own distict flavor. It’s not like a bus or train. An earthquake is obvious. That is what I tell myself when I feel a bump. I know that if it is not immediately apparent it is an earthquake, it is not. Earthquakes are obvious and still freak the heck out of me. :>)
I still haven’t mastered the run to a doorway routine, I still freeze like a deer in headlights. Sigh. :>)
we’re gonna have to spend more time than a weekend so you can see the very irrational side of me 🙂 I have a friend in Palo Alto I may be visiting in a few weeks, I’ll let you know when I’m in the area.
Ugh….they cancelled the last meeting so we still have no parent recognized by the board. But, they did hold an informal meeting to explain why they had to fire multiple teachers and staff. I give them two more years and then I just may have to look elsewhere.
that they’re still being flakey. I get so frustrated with our board. Their idea of “Public Notice” is to post an agenda the day before in the copy room where only staff is bound to see it. Alot of things would be different with our schools if more input was allowed by parents and students, that’s for sure.
They are demanding ridiculous things like getting a 100% vote on the spokesperson. It’s a continual fight, but it is not over yet. We are making progress, slowly but surely.
hey Kama you know I haven’t been around much — I take it your daughter’s school’s been hit with a lot of cuts and layoffs? If that’s the case I’m sorry to hear it.
Next year my best friend’s kid joins the school and they are far more active than me in these things. I look forward to their opinions and actions. Kamakid has been in 4 elementary schools. 2 died while she was a student. I’m beginning to think we are cursed. :>)
Yeah…its a Charter. Since the public schools are so bad, Charter is our last hope. She’s at Oakland School for the Arts. You might have heard of it since it makes the news now and then.
It seems to me I read something about it very recently. It seems like charter schools often have a tough time making a go of it. The deck is stacked against them in some ways. I know a lot of families and teachers at the Creative Arts Charter School in S.F. It was new when my daughter was little and I almost sent her there but it seemed too disorganized at the time. It was rocky for years. The district moved them practically every year and they had some problems figuring out how to do administration within the school. They seem quite solid now though.
Sorry to be rude and butt in here, but wanted to say I’m glad to hear that you and Lil both came out of the quake unscathed. I had no clue there even was one before I popped in here a bit ago! So much for me being out of the general loop lately, but de-loopage happens I guess.
Hope all is going well otherwise out there on the left coast! The middle coast is coasting towards bed here at this point as we still simmer waiting for the mythical promised rain (which, according to my last look at the radar is just about here!). So I hope to fade off to thunder and rain tonight… and hope you have a pleasant drift off too, with no shaking involved!!
Hey IVG…Thanks for the nice thoughts, but it was a minor quake…The kind we are thankful for because they take pressure off the fault lines and make the “Big One” less likely. :>)
Hi Manee! — earthquakes tend to bring all kinds of critters out of the woodwork so here I am. It’s nice to have some company when the ground is shaking under us.
imagine what that feels like. We may have the extreme heat down here in Tucson but that’s about it as far as crazy weather (he says as we just finished having record flooding).
Hey O, your UN report was spectacular, truly fine work. I was both impressed and informed. Thank you.
P.S.: Sorry to freak anyone out on the earthquake. It was minor, but I so hate them that I tend to freak. I’ve gotten so sensitive to them that I usually can judge the magnitude and the location. This was a “rolling” quake, and it hit about 40 miles north of me. It hit me about 3-4 minutes after it started, so I gather the earth just did one nice shimmy. :>)
It flowed and shined and was one of the best diaries I have seen here. You should really consider writing more. You have a style that is easy to read. Really, I was seriously impressed.
Just popping in to add on to the accolades, Olivia! Great diary, well written and wow, stellar research.
Looks like I’ve missed most folks here at this hour, but should be heading to bed soon anyway, but I wanted to make sure I read your diary before it slipped off the list!
Just found out my favorite band, Ozomatli, will be returning to Arizona this month. Can’t wait to get my tix for the show. This will be #6, I highly recommend them as they’re the best live sound I’ve heard in my life.
And with that, I’m heading out to finish laundry and do some other mundane chores before bed. Buenas Noches Amigos!
Hi Manny! Bye Manny, 🙁 Seems like I keep doing this dance lately, but such is my lot when I haven’t been around much lately. I’d love to learn more about that band, so muchas gracias para el linkecito!
You and Bud take care and stay as cool as possible… heat’s supposed to break here soon … hope you get a reprieve from the infierno and the flooding.
Just dashed in for a sec to say hi before bed. On vacation for two days and will be having daily acupuncture treatments to try to put the hurtin’ on the chronic insomnia. Both housemates back from their trips so the house is a bit livelier-I’m glad I don’t live alone very often anymore.
A fresh roomy cafe for whoever’s around.

Go fug yourself is one of my faves — it’s just hysterical. That and fafblog are the only two sites that make me laugh out loud on a regular basis.
I’m glad you liked the diary the other day — I decided to stop being lazy and just write it.
I just now saw that about the earthquake! (I’d been off having dinner) Where is kamakhya located, do you know?
in the Oakland area, I believe. I’ve never been in an earthquake but survived a few tornadoes so I’m sufficiently freaked out for life regarding harsh weather/natural disasters.

I still waffle on what is worse…Tornados or earthquakes and at the moment, I think the former. At least an earthquake is fast. :>)
No problem Manee…I just hate the damn things. If I didn’t love CA so much I would move to more solid ground!
No…it seems to be my way of coping! :>)
I think lots of other people guess too. It definitely is a coping mechanism. If you can measure it, it ain’t so awful.
I live across the bay from Kamakhya and I was in a meeting – two people jumped up and ran for the door and the other two didn’t feel it at all.
Hey Lil! Hugs.
I have yet to meet another like me, but then most of my associates are long term or lifelong Kalifornians. They all just shrug likes its a train passing or something.

I know, I’m often the same. Deer, headlights. That doorway thing is overrated anyway. Better to get under a sturdy table or desk if there’s one handy.
good to see you around the cafe decloaked 🙂
I would’ve been the guy cowering under my chair pretending to be able to fit underneath it. hehe
LOL! You’d like to think so!
I, however, could not keep my mouth shut! Shocker there I know. :>)
well, I’m sure the room would’ve also rumbled from the force of my multiple f-bombs O:-)
No way…you are the epitome of rational. :>)
I just get so wrapped up that I just have to spew. I’m like Leezy that way! :>)
we’re gonna have to spend more time than a weekend so you can see the very irrational side of me 🙂 I have a friend in Palo Alto I may be visiting in a few weeks, I’ll let you know when I’m in the area.
Oh please let me know. I would love to see you again and would be honored to take you and your friend to dinner.
The email I have listed is unreliable. If you want to email me, try my work address: lynx at zimpatent you know what com.
If you need anything, let me know.
how are things going with the school board?
Ugh….they cancelled the last meeting so we still have no parent recognized by the board. But, they did hold an informal meeting to explain why they had to fire multiple teachers and staff. I give them two more years and then I just may have to look elsewhere.

It’s just a typical money issue.
I always seem to get involved with these new schools with volatile issues and progressive ideals. Sigh. :>)
Yes it goes with the territory, with a new school. I hope you don’t have to bang your head against the wall too much.
Next year my best friend’s kid joins the school and they are far more active than me in these things. I look forward to their opinions and actions. Kamakid has been in 4 elementary schools. 2 died while she was a student. I’m beginning to think we are cursed. :>)
That’s good that you’re gaining some allies. Is it a charter school?
Yeah…its a Charter. Since the public schools are so bad, Charter is our last hope. She’s at Oakland School for the Arts. You might have heard of it since it makes the news now and then.

Thank you IVG. I just heard some TV news — no injuries reported. It has cooled off quite a bit here. I hope the cooling rain comes your way tonight.
Hi Manee! — earthquakes tend to bring all kinds of critters out of the woodwork so here I am. It’s nice to have some company when the ground is shaking under us.

I didn’t know Tucson just had record flooding — or I forgot. Some weather we’re having huh?
Some earthquakes feel like a fast jolt — some are a long roll. But I agree with Kama, tornadoes seem like the worst.
Hey O, your UN report was spectacular, truly fine work. I was both impressed and informed. Thank you.

It’s a lot of info to fit into a diary, and it was hard to decide what to include and what to leave out. It’s good to know that it flows. 🙂
It flowed and shined and was one of the best diaries I have seen here. You should really consider writing more. You have a style that is easy to read. Really, I was seriously impressed.
