What about religion and environment? We’re seeing huge interest from religious groups of all faiths in “The Great Warming,” a hard-science-based documentary on global warming, its potential for disaster and ways to mitigate our impact.
Most of my neighbors here in Utah are Mormon and I’m a lapsed atheist, but we can all go out and do riverbed clean-up and recycling drives without discussing personal beliefs. In the same vein, if evangelists want to call environmental stewardship “creation care” when they’re pounding on Bush’s door demanding change (and actually being invited in), that’s OK with me.
Check out the issues, the groups (secular and not) and the film at http://www.thegreatwarming.com. The documentary – which was already on PBS in a cut-down version, and aired in Canada as a series – comes out in the US Nov. 3rd.
Thanks for the reminder, Renee. If I lived close to Columbus, I’d be there. This is a particularly important event, given the role of Ohio in the Restorationist movement that has become entwined with the religious right. I hope Rob Boston gets a lot of attention in Columbus, and wherever he speaks.
