Just to let everyone know what a bored (and boring) person I am… I’m actually excited about the start of the new fall tv season. At the end of the day, I need to lay my tired old body down in my comfy recliner, take the remote in hand and seek diversion.
Among the early starters, I’ve watched “Justice,” “Men in Trees” and the CBS Monday night comedy line-up that starts with “The Class.” Last night I stayed up late for the return of “Boston Legal” and there are a slew of shows I’m looking forward to seeing.
“Justice” is about a high-profile, La-la-land law firm that handles media circus-type cases. The twist at the end of each show is a reveal of what really happened. So far, the murders have gone down pretty much the way the partners supposed in planning their defense. <yawn> I see a pattern here. It would be somewhat more stimulating if the person that they just got off turned out to be guilty as sin. About the best thing going in the show is a wicked depiction of a Nancy Grace clone. This show loses my viewing next week when “Lost” returns. But, if “Lost” continues to irritate the hell of me, it will be good to have a fall-back.
The first two episodes of “Men in Trees” were pleasant enough; I always liked “Northern Exposure.” Ellen Degeneres’ former girlfriend is cutely hetero as a “dating coach” guru who suddenly realizes she’s full of bullshit. She finds herself in the town of Elmo, Alaska, with a goodly supply of mildly quirky characters and one hunky lust object. I might have kept watching this show if it didn’t land in its regular Friday slot in competition with the start of the new “Doctor Who” series on SciFi.
For want of anything better to watch, Hubby and I settled into the CBS Monday night line-up that started with “The Class” went to something I don’t remember followed by Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer being depressing in “Two and A Half Men” and then concluded with a show with Seinfeld’s friend girl. I didn’t make it all the way to 10pm because I was lulled into a senseless stupor and went to bed.
Next Monday, I get to check out “Heroes” and force myself to stay awake for the return of “What About Brian.” W.A.B. was supposed to be a between-season filler but it caught my attention and generated web forums of devotees. I can’t honestly identify why this show hooked me. It’s basically a soap opera about a group of freinds but the characters made me care about what happens to them. So I’ll tune in to see if Brian gets the gorgeous doctor and betrays his childhood friend.
Tuesday nights are looking very good: “Eureka” is on SciFi followed by “Boston Legal” on ABC.
“Eureka” has got the quirky town/eccentric characters formula down pat and the theme music stays in my head for days. The spin lies in the fact that instead of being stupid bumpkins, the townfolk are brilliant scientists who invent stupid stuff.
“Boston Legal” continues to be outstanding. I mean, it’s a laugh-out-loud show about decidedly messed-up, perverted people. In the midst of the hilarity it drives home a couple of messages a week that promote the dreaded Hollywood liberal agenda.
Tonight, I’m anticipating “Jericho.” Yes, indeed, what happens to a small town when the rest of the country is blown up by A-bombs? I really want to see what the townfolk do when they run out of toilet paper and toothpaste. The pilot episode was surely already written by Rod Sterling but I’ll give them a chance to do something different with it. <not holding my breath>
Thursday night, I’ll be watching “Ugly Betty” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” The former looks interesting and the later will hopefully answer the question, “Who will she choose? The hot but married doctor or the yummy and available vet?” I’m guessing she’s a doormat and will go for the doctor.
So what have you been watching? What shows are you determined to watch?
Though I like Boston Legal I am absolutely hooked on Nip/Tuck which is on opposite. Grey’s Anatomy is a favorite though I find myself pretty much hating Meredith. Sandra Oh is the best.
I thought Men in Trees was sort of enjoyable and very much stolen from Northern Exposure. There sure isn’t anything else on on Friday nights.
Don’t you get SciFi channel? The new “Doctor Who” is outstanding. If not, “Men in Trees” is good enough.
I agree on Sandra Oh and equally find Meredith irritating.
I totally agree on the Meredith/Sandra Oh thing…and I think the doormat is going to pick the married guy instead of the cool one.
Well actually I haven’t watched tv in maybe years-there’s never anyone on it who looks/acts like the people I know. Here’s who I’ve met (or ran into again) recently:
*the friend who canned dill pickles after he ingested hallucinogens to get over his broken heart
*A homeless man who let me listen to an audio tape he’d just found (’twas Weird Al Yankovich) and gave me flowers and herbs. He had recently recovered his mother’s ashes from where he’d stored them with a friend and was going to bury them in the old pioneer cemetary.
*A handsome young man with some faint facial tattoos in a black suit with a swallowtail jacket and a buckled leather chest protector who played complicated modern music on a bazuki. His nickname was the same as mine but for different reasons.
* Fred, who is homeless by choice and taking care of the planters at the local anarchist cafe. He was wearing a Tibetan shirt that looked exactly like the one a former housemate stole from me. Fred gave me a basket for my bicycle several months ago.
*A weeping young woman who’d decided to drop out of college and move to my city, not knowing anyone, because she felt called to the place and wants to be a healer. Her wallet was stolen and she ‘s almost out of money and does not want to return to Texas.
Well I guess it’s not everyone’s cup of tea!
city, as in lots of people. There are exactly nine people within a mile of me out here in nowhere North Carolina. Three of them are over 75 and all but one of them is a strident Baptist. That one is my good friend and has a waterwheel grist mill where he makes the finest corn flour I’ve ever seen.
For reasons he couldn’t explain he planted a 150 foot row of cucumbers. So I canned 36 jars of dill, bread & butter and kosher pickles earlier this summer. I wasn’t broken hearted; that’s just what we do out here in the boonies.
And let me tell you, when the sun goes down it gets friggin’ pitch-black dark out here. If I had a local anarchist cafe, I wouldn’t be watching tv either.
The only shows I look forward to now are “Eureka”, “My Name is Earl” and the “Stargate” series. I always loved “Northern Exposure” and haven’t heard about “Men in Trees”, so I guess I check that one out.
Of course some unnamed people (Andi & Maryb) are trying to get me into “Gilmore Girls”, but I’ll have to wait and see how that goes. 🙂
No, can’t tempt me. I watched it once almost all the way thru… but, I got bored.
I’m still watching Survivor, despite the objectionable gimmicks. The Antiques Roadshow, whenever they get around to new installments, is still a favorite. As to Northern Exposure ripoffs, I’ll stick with my DVDs of the original series. Lost was starting to make me crazy, so I’m not sure if I’ll be watching it.
I watched “Justice” again last night and the reveal at the end actually had a small surprise. So maybe they’re aware that the show needs to deviate from its formula to maintain long-term interest.
I’m giving “Lost” a couple of episodes this year to start ‘splaining it’self, dammit. If it keeps up the contrived veil of ignorance over the characters and viewers, I won’t be able to stand it anymore.
I thought there was a little too much emphasis on the eventual soap opera this show will likely become but keeping the end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it sorta in the background was kinda clever.
Did anyone else watch? What did you think?
