and carrying on about how the Repubs are gonna win, no matter what Poppy Bush thinks: Reuters
President Bush gently admonished his father for saying he hates to think what life would be like for his son if the Democrats win control of Congress in the November 7 election.
It was the latest sign of possible strain in the relationship between the two men.
“He shouldn’t be speculating like this, because — he should have called me ahead of time and I’d tell him they’re not going to (win),” a smiling Bush told ABC “This Week” in an interview broadcast on Sunday…
…A power shift would create a political nightmare for Bush, whose public approval ratings are below 40 percent. His domestic legislative agenda would be stymied and he would see stepped-up pressure to withdraw from Iraq while possibly facing congressional investigations into the unpopular war.
So, is it that W’s meds are good, that he has such utter faith in Rove, or that he knows the plan to steal votes is in place?
It’s the meds, um, and he surely does love Karl, um, and he’s probably comfortable with the level of dirty tricks, um, is this a trick question? Somehow, as much as I dislike Poppy, I think he probably has a much better grip on reality than his moron son. Yet I share the nervous feeling that no holds will be barred in stealing this election. Are we overestimating Rovian tricks? Or (hopefully) underestimating US anger and disgust with Republicans? My sister-in-law who was staunch Republican even in her youth back in the 60’s when I was wearing flowers in my hair and flashing the peace sign has said to me that she can’t defend Bush. To me, that’s perhaps a more accurate barometer. Oh hell, my head hurts.
But as for the elections? My God, I honestly don’t know if the fix is in (both voting machines AND voter suppression) of if shrub is in deep, deep, denial.
But Snow is caught saying “we dropped Stay the course” asked when? he replied August. Heard on NPR’s ‘All things Considered’, no transcipt – they played a clip of the Presser.

The White House is bracing for guerrilla warfare on the homefront politically if Republicans lose control of the House, the Senate or both — and with it, the president’s ability to shape and dominate the national agenda…
…Republicans are battling to keep control of Congress. But polls and analysts in both parties increasingly suggest Democrats will capture the House and possibly the Senate on Election Day Nov. 7.
I guess the AP has got George’s back…and realize the grinning confidence routine sounds delusional given the polling results.
Actor Harrison Ford has said he feels “fit” at the age of 64 to reprise the role of action hero Indiana Jones.
The film star, who last played the part in 1989’s The Last Crusade, said at the Rome Film Festival that he could “bring the same physical action” to a remake.
George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have said they are working on a script for the fourth movie, which has been in development for more than 10 years.
Um, no offense Harrison, but I think your sexy swashbuckling hero days are over. No matter what Calista Flockhart tells you.
Jan Egeland, the Norwegian diplomat who’s been heading the United Nations’ emergency aid operations, has signalled his intention to leave his post as an under-secretary general by the end of the year.
Egeland has been the chief coordinator of the UN’s relief efforts since 2003, working closely with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who also is leaving the UN on December 31.
Egeland, who’s also been an internationally recognized peace negotiator from Norway and a former head of the Norwegian Red Cross, said he wants to move home to Norway out of consideration for his family. He’s married to a former Norwegian government minister for foreign aid and has two daughters.
Too bad, Jan Egeland has been able to make a real difference. Recall how he shamed the world’s rich to give more for the Tsunami relief effort.
In an interview conducted on the eve of the publication of his memoirs, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder defends Russian President Vladimir Putin and the right to criticize the policies of the United States without immediately being labelled “anti-American.”
Mahmoud al-Zahar, foreign minister of the Palestinian Authority’s Hamas-led government, says a big majority of Hamas supports the struggle against Israel despite recent conciliatory comments from Hamas officials about a possible indirect recognition of Israel and an end to violence.
Not much new on the science front today, so here’s some food for thought:
Humans are undoubtedly the most dominant species the Earth has ever known. In just a few thousand years we have swallowed up more than a third of the planet’s land for our cities, farmland and pastures. By some estimates, we now commandeer 40 per cent of all its productivity. And we’re leaving quite a mess behind: ploughed-up prairies, razed forests, drained aquifers, nuclear waste, chemical pollution, invasive species, mass extinctions and now the looming spectre of climate change. If they could, the other species we share Earth with would surely vote us off the planet.
Now just suppose they got their wish. Imagine that all the people on Earth – all 6.5 billion of us and counting – could be spirited away tomorrow, transported to a re-education camp in a far-off galaxy. (Let’s not invoke the mother of all plagues to wipe us out, if only to avoid complications from all the corpses). Left once more to its own devices, Nature would begin to reclaim the planet, as fields and pastures reverted to prairies and forest, the air and water cleansed themselves of pollutants, and roads and cities crumbled back to dust.
What would Earth be like without us? How long would it take for the traces of our passing to disappear? Follow the link for something to think about…
“AMERICAN officials held secret talks with leaders of the Iraqi insurgency last week after admitting that their two-month clampdown on violence in Baghdad had failed. Few details of the discussions in the Jordanian capital Amman have emerged but an Iraqi source close to the negotiations said the participants had met for at least two days. [..]
The talks with Sunni insurgents, a further sign that US forces in Iraq are rethinking their tactics, came amid parallel efforts to persuade Shi’ite militias to quell their own violence.” [..]
AL HAIG, FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE: Well, first, I think that this is a conflict that’s essentially political. It’s not just purely military. It’s political and religious and ideological. And it was driven by the so-called neocons that hijacked my party, the Republican Party, before this administration…
BLITZER: Name names, Mr. Secretary. Who are you talking about?
HAIG: Well, I’m talking about… I’m talking about Wolfowitz. I’m talking about Richard Perle. I’m talking about some newly-made ones. I’m talking about the former editor of the Wall Street Journal.[.]

That about sums up my feelings exactly. Is he crazy? Is Rove that clever, or do we give him too much credit? Are they that evil?
Pass the analgesics…
In total, TOTAL denial:
Stay the Course? No, “We’ve never been stay the course!” George to George-ABC This Week (H/T: Thinkprogress)
The biggest lie of all. Do they honestly think anyone can forget the phrase they’ve been hammering homr for how long now?
Somebody needs to pull up the video footage of all the times George and Dick have carried on about staying the course.
Thinkprogress has the evidence in 2 videos.
Video 1. White House counselor Dan Bartlett on CBS this morning;”It’s Never Been A Stay The Course Strategy” like on 10/23/06.
Video 2. Bush making the claim “stay the course”
Both videos in same link.
Denial in meltdown.
I don’t buy it. Never have, never will.
But as for the elections? My God, I honestly don’t know if the fix is in (both voting machines AND voter suppression) of if shrub is in deep, deep, denial.
I really don’t know. Scary either way.
I agree with you. And Rove has definitely miscalculated on his messaging this go-round.
“We were never stay the course…”
Great going, CG.
