I think I am going to like this new Congress. I may even get addicted to C-SPAN. This is from Taegan Goddard:
Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), “the incoming chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, told the New York Post that he’s got his eye on Capitol Hill office space now held by the man he recently called a “son of a bitch” — Vice President Dick Cheney.
Said Rangel: “Mr. Cheney enjoys an office on the second floor of the
House of Representatives that historically has been designated for the
Ways and Means Committee chairman… I talked to Nancy Pelosi about it
this morning… I’m trying to find some way to be gentle as I restore
the dignity of that office.”As for his earlier comment to the vice president, the New York Daily News notes Rangel said, “I take back saying that publicly. I should have
reserved that for him when we were together privately. Believe me, he
would have understood.”
Patrick Healy has a good profile on what these elections mean for the state of New York. Hint: lots of power and money.
Wow, talk about bent over Republican Congress for W. when the VP can tell the chairman of the House Ways & Means to move to another office..If I were Republican I would be ashamed.
being a Republican means you never have to feel ashamed. Unless you’re convicted.
Not even then. See Gordon Liddy, Oliver North, Spiro Agnew, etc., etc., etc.
For Liddy it was a career move.
Get out of my head!
Good for us NYers!
Yes — all of us, we hope.
Glad Rangel is working on the really important stuff.
Oh, I know. You’re absolutely right. And if this was anyone else, I’d just shrug my shoulders.
But Cheney needs to be taken down a peg or two. Rangel is putting the evil fucker on notice that’s he’s not to be toyed with.
And that’s just fine by me.
This is another reason I’m glad Rangel is screwing with him–this statement by Cheney:
“Charlie doesn’t know how the economy works.”
It’s so insulting on so many levels. First, he’s patronizing. Second, he’s downing Rep. Rangel’s expertise. But most importantly–addressing Rangel by his first name? I know Southern tactics when I see them. Rep. Rangel has a title, dammit–fucking use it. He could have even called him “Mr. Rangel” but he fucking said “Charlie” like he was talking about some 12-year-old.
The evil bastard knew what he was doing.
I’m just frustrated because I’m hearing the Dems being oh sooo cautious about their new found power. Cautious about the important stuff.
I’ve heard it said we can’t pursue impeachment because it would look “vindictive.” I rather look vinidictive in impeaching and criminally indicting Cheney than to have Rangel get into a pissing match with him over something petty.
Oh, I definitely understand–you are so right. I want to see substance after all these years.
But still … the devil on my right shoulder is enjoying this.
They haven’t been seated yet. Right now, all they have is the perception of power not the actuality and that perceived power rests entirely on keeping the good will of the swing voters. The mighty wurlitzer is just sitting there, waiting to cut them down on anything that sounds even remotely gaffe-like. Nobody is going to start playing hard ball unless and until they hold the seats and actual power. Mind you, they may still wimp out at that point, but the fact that everything is all cordiality right now is driven in part by the fact that there’s still 2 months of Republican rule left to endure.
I hope that Charlie is keeping an eye on at least two items besides his brilliant office claim!
Item 1- Price of oil appears to be starting to go up again!
Item 2- The chimps attempt to appoint robert gates as sec def!
I doubt that there is anyone out here that wasn’t positive that oil would begin to go up after the election but I would bet the farm that robert gates is a non – entity to most. This appointment Must be stopped or at least gates should be forced to answer the questions that he has been ducking for over a decade!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If he refuses- screw the chimp. What makes me worried is the fact that Biden has already come out praising him. Is this the first sign that things are going to be the same?
how long it will take for the repugs to blame the price of gas going up on the newly elected Dem majority? I predicted this when they dropped a month or so before the election. It was like clockwork and so obvious to me. Someone said well Bush doesn’t have that kind of power. No, he may not but the puppetmasters do and that includes big oil.
Heard a CNN blurb for this afternon’s news: “How much will the Democratic sweep cost you at the pump?”
I’m betting less than 48 hours.
That is so outrageous. Dang, I remember when CNN used to be a place where you got real news.
I, too, knew full well gas prices would go up right after the election and blaming it on the Dems is just so easy. On the other hand, the voters proved that they are not as stupid as Bush/Rove thinks they are.
That SON OF A BITCH said “Go fuck yourself.” on the floor of the Senate and ALL of the networks reported it!
Good bye Dead Eye. Go Cheney yourself.
Regarding oil prices… Bush stopped filling the strategic oil reserve in early August. There is no incentive on the part of the administration to hold off on buying once again. Also a few weeks ago, Saudi Arabia stated that they would start to cut back on production.
Remember back in early September when the Bushies said the price of oil was due to the incredibly high demand on the current world oil supplies? Remember how we had to share the available oil pool with the Chinese and they were going gangbusters? Perhaps we need to cut a check to China. Their economy must really be in the tank if the demand has fallen so badly since August…
