I think I’m going to do that too. Not that I’m cooking for tomorrow, but we’re almost out of milk, and I need to make sure I have everything for the cranberry chutney.
Are you off to the relatives tomorrow, or having folks over? (You’ve probably told everyone already, but I wasn’t around this weekend.)
I’m making these fantastic roasted brussels sprouts (more commonly known in my family of origin as Spragglenuggies)that no one likes except me. Just toss them with olive oil, kosher salt and freshly ground pepper and roast them in a hot oven until they turn completely brown and look incinerated. They’re so good!
We’re going to my sweetie’s family for dinner this year. Which should be interesting, since we’re so used to our little 4-person Thanksgiving with my mom.
Instead of cooking, I get to hope that SurlyBoy isn’t surly tomorrow. 🙂
Can you mention it in the title? I’d thought of putting up a diary about it, but then remembered that someone did something last year and I couldn’t recall who or exactly when. I do think people would enjoy the recipes whether or not it was “too late”. Yum!
When I picked up a frozen turkey breast on Monday, I was nearly assaulted by a little old lady who just couldn’t wait another 30 seconds — reasonable, perhaps, since she was about 148 — to select her frozen turkey breast, and she actually reached underneath my stomach to take one from the bin while I was leaning over it.
You just reminded me that I have a coupon for a free turkey that I need to go pick up. And I can do that now that I finished my work project that was due today!
How are you doing this morning? Get to check out that mix yet? 🙂
Good morning Andi, ask, BobX. Andi is the undisputed champion of woodsy photos. Should be a good day for walking in the latter, weatherwise, at least. The deer hunters are about in these parts, so we have to be extra cautious. Got hunter orange for the pack?
The amount of gunshots have been really low this year — I was really surprised how few shots I heard on Saturday. The deer around the house have been plentiful, though.
Good morning! I’ve seen bunches of dead deer at the side of even our suburban streets the past few weeks. I don’t know when deer season is but it makes me think it’s here.
I sort of enjoyed yesterday’s cold rain, ice pellets, and wind, but today it’s worse and I’ve got stuff to do!
On a good note, I don’t think my elderly in-laws will be making the 2.5 hour drive to have dinner with us, so at least I won’t have to fret if the turkey is dry or we “forget” to say a prayer before eating.
I’m crushed. And they don’t really match – I refused to pay $9.99 for 4 napkins so I’m using an eclectic mix. Hopefully (he he) I’ll remember which ones I’ve used to sop up dog pee with.
Yeah, they’re home, but Ryan has to work on Friday so she’s got to go back “home”. She lives in a house with 5 other students and they never got gas connected for heat because it was too expensive. :::this is me quietly seething and not saying anything about how dangerous space heaters are and how you could probably afford heat if everyone in the house was paying their fair share:::
Good morning, folks! Lovely to see you, as always — & my blood simply refuses to circulate property ’til I’ve seen one of Andi’s wonderful images.
Alas, I’ve now joined the ranks of the Community Sickly. Naturally, I spent five full winters in a northern meat-locker & felt perfectly well; now I’m in the Sunshine State & I’ve experienced at least three different influenzas.
Further proof that love conquers all — even phlegm!
In any case, this holiday I plan to do diddly-squat. Here’s wishing y’all a wonderful time today & throughout Blessings Day tomorrow. Enjoy!
No … there’s nothing they can do for me, other than tell me to do what I’m currently doing … rest, fluids, manage symptoms. And I hate going to the dr almost as much as getting my hair cut.
poor O! Lots and lots of fluid — it really works. And when you can’t stand drinking it anymore, eat popsicles. They help your throat too. (uh … I assume you have popsicles up there?)
I forget … why do you hate getting your hair cut? And I never imagined you with Lady Godiva length hair but I will now 🙂
The last time I got really really sick I had to go to a new doctor because it was christmas and mine was away or something.
He was really strange. He looked down my throat and then looked intently at me and said “Popsicles?” And then just stood there. Finally I said , “what about them?” “Do you like them,” he said — in a demanding voice. I had a 103 temperature and was totally confused. FINALLY he told me I should eat them because they would make my throat feel better.
We used to just snap off an icicle from the overhaging eaves.
My hair scare was ; as a kid living in poverty, the drunk neighbor would cut our hair for 20cents. He had manual clippers & he would clip in & yank. It was basically torture but that`s all there was. He`d be telling stories to the other drunk millworkers in his living room, & swearing like a trooper {in French}. BTW, Most French swearing is like this, “Mom, the neighbor is really mad & yelling.” “You can tell me about it, but leave out the swear words, now, what did he say”. “Uh, nothing”.
The other fact about French Canadian swearing is that it`s mostly all sacrilegious swearing.
Here`s one from my “Sinner Bits” collection.
Drunk neighbour eh, that’d give me haircut phobia for sure. And I’m familiar w/ the FC swearing … I lived w/ a Quebec family one summer as a kid … learned a lot. 😉
you know .. planning ahead for charades isn’t a bad idea. The problem with our family is the we all read the same books and see the same movies — so we guess things really easily. But if I planned ahead … I could come up with something more obscure. how evil …
I love that I don’t have to travel on Thanksgiving. I love that everyone comes “home” for it. These days we even have family members who didn’t grow up here coming. We DO throw a good Thanksgiving. Despite the charades 😉
Maybe you should suggest charades at YOUR gathering.
for holidays so this is definitely my preference (’cause I don’t want folks coming here).
My family is a ill-behaved group and organized activities devolve into chaos within 5 minutes of starting. So I have no problems with the charades suggestion because it wouldn’t never last long enough to get to me.
but we’re easily motivated to do group activities since none of us watch football.
The other thing that most people find odd about our Thanksgivings is that there is no alcohol. Hasn’t been for at least 30 years because my uncle used to have a drinking problem — but he’s been sober for 30 years. It’s always at their house so they don’t serve it and everyone respects their wishes and doesn’t bring any.
Wow-Beautiful photo-I want to walk right into it and take a hike instead of being at work, Friday-Wednesday or not! Only one month until the solstice-woohoo!
Just dragged myself kicking and screaming into the 21st century and got a cell phone. Decided my first revolutionary act with it was to send a maybe-love poem to a certain individual as a text message-he was impressed by my grasp of technology. We’ll see if there’s any other sort of reaction.
I just got back from my two week check up on sinuses. Everything is moving along excellent. I am sleeping much better now. I guess people with a deviated septum have a hard time getting all the oxygen they need when they sleep and are restless sleepers as they age. I used to need an hour nap in the afternoons too if I had Joshua all day running around but no more now either. I was worried because the side that was deviated has been all stuffy this week. I thought maybe something was wrong, but no…it never had to process much air flow and now that it is it is over reacting right now and will calm down. My asthma flared again this week but it’s due to the sinus over reaction.
I am catsitting today and tomorrow. Three neighborhood cats are in my house, and my cat has managed to befriend each of them. Now I am entertained by occassional wrestling matches and chase scenes. I must say it is a lot of fun, especially when my cat’s tail assumes the shape and texture of a plume.
I feel bad that none of the major cat lovers are in the cafe right now to ooh and ah with you over pooties. But since we’re virtual anyway, I will virtually pretend to be them and you can virtually imagine me doing the requisite ooh and ahing. 🙂
Been busy with Real Life crap recently which is why I’ve been absent in the Cafe…looks like things starting to settle down though (crossing fingers, knocking wood, and hoping Andi has good suggestions for warding off the Evil Eye).
Just whipped together a Wednesday/Virtual Friday Random 10:
Poundcake — Van Halen
Gypsy — Fleetwood Mac
Pictures at an Exhibition: VII. Bydlo (comp. Mussorgsky) — Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra
25 or 6 to 4 — Chicago
“Water Music” Suite: Allegro Maestoso (comp. Handel) — Canadian Brass
“Water Music” : Bouree (comp. Handel) — Wendy Carlos
You Take Me Up — Thompson Twins
Need You Tonight — INXS
Follow You, Follow Me — Genesis
Down in Yon Forest — The Voice Squad
(Okay, the last one is technically a Christmas carol, and so it should be too early for that one, but this is a beautiful rendition of a little known song…)
Need to brave the maddening crowds at the grocery store (to pick up a few essentials) and BevMo (to get wine and sparkling cider for tomorrow). Dinner for 25 at my sister’s…better her than me. 🙂
Hope everyone has a safe and (relatively sane) holiday…
especially from both my Canadian Brass and “Well Tempered Synthesizer” collections…
Weather permitting (and right now it looks positive), my oldest greatniece (12 going on 25) will be leading a post-dinner/pre-dessert walk; that should be interesting. My sister just moved to a new house in a new neighborhood, so there’s a lot of territory to explore…
I ran, or rather swam, into a large grouper once. It was about 6 feet long, and a very impressive fish. You see them a lot while snorkling around Catalina Island. And then there’s the young sea lions at Catalina who make great sport of swimming out of the darkened depths full speed right up to your mask – just to watch you panic.
I had a long-standing and quite serious relationship for many years with a grouper at the Shedd Acquarium (in Chicago). I loved the way he just laid there and looked big. Unfortunately, it was a one-sided affair — he never even noticed I existed.
There’s a theory that it was really a grouper, and not a whale, that inspired the tale of Jonah, because there have been actual accounts of divers beeing swallowed whole by a grouper, only to swim out again through gills.
That’s interesting. Do grouper exist everywhere? Even the Mediterranean? ( I guess I assume the people who wrote the Job story wouldn’t have had access to other seas.)
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Good morning, Andi.
A very quiet cafe this morning.
-FM + -Refinish = quiet
Yes, that’s very true.
Where are those gents?
FM has a bad cold but I don’t where refinish is. He had the flu a couple of weeks ago so maybe he’s got a lot of catching up to do at work.
I hope they’re both okay.
Is everybody ready for the holiday?
I hope so too.
I’m going to head out to the grocery in a few to get up some stuff before everything is picked over.
I think I’m going to do that too. Not that I’m cooking for tomorrow, but we’re almost out of milk, and I need to make sure I have everything for the cranberry chutney.
Are you off to the relatives tomorrow, or having folks over? (You’ve probably told everyone already, but I wasn’t around this weekend.)
that’s our “traditional” t’day location — she’s centrally located to everybody and my mom like coming down and staying there for a few days.
That’s nice…what are you making?
a corn casserole and green beens with onions and mushrooms.
Sounds good but I’m the only one in the family who like brussel sprouts.
Me too. I’m just being selfish.
Do that with asparagus and add some balsamic vinegar, and I’m there. Brussels sprouts, not so much.
I love brussel sprouts roasted like that — I’m making them, too. 🙂
is it this corn casserole?
(Can you tell I’m having fun looking through the recipes from last year?)
Yep that’s the one and the comment still applies — I’m still not that crazy about it and the family still always wants me to make it.
Happy Thanksgiving Cabin Girl, and to the boys too. 🙂
Happy T-day to you and yours too!
Hey, I was thinking about posting the links to last year’s Thanksgiving recipe swap cafes. Do you think it’s too late?
how about putting them in the diary part of the news bucket?
So if you aren’t cooking, who’s feeding you?
Great idea for the News Bucket…
We’re going to my sweetie’s family for dinner this year. Which should be interesting, since we’re so used to our little 4-person Thanksgiving with my mom.
Instead of cooking, I get to hope that SurlyBoy isn’t surly tomorrow. 🙂
Can you mention it in the title? I’d thought of putting up a diary about it, but then remembered that someone did something last year and I couldn’t recall who or exactly when. I do think people would enjoy the recipes whether or not it was “too late”. Yum!
Done!
Eeenteresting..
I think bribery or threats are in order for Surly Boy. 🙂
I went out yesterday morning before 9:00 and the stores were already packed. A combination of bad weather panic buying and Thanksgiving dinner needs.
Still can’t process music, so not yet. 🙁
Free turkey + work done = woohoo!
Good Morning Everyone!
Wow…what a nice picture.
Good morning! Are you off work today, or is it a Friday Wednesday for you too?
Sort of a Fri-Wed. We had company for 10 days, we’re still cleaning up.
Thank you. It was pretty nice taking it, too. 🙂
Good morning Andi, ask, BobX. Andi is the undisputed champion of woodsy photos. Should be a good day for walking in the latter, weatherwise, at least. The deer hunters are about in these parts, so we have to be extra cautious. Got hunter orange for the pack?
and thanks for the kind words.
The amount of gunshots have been really low this year — I was really surprised how few shots I heard on Saturday. The deer around the house have been plentiful, though.
The economy is hurting them deer hunters too. Have to conserve bullets.
In times like these, I’m glad I live in town. Morning, SN.
Good morning! I’ve seen bunches of dead deer at the side of even our suburban streets the past few weeks. I don’t know when deer season is but it makes me think it’s here.
Yeah but it’s probably conserving on buying beer that’s holding down the number of shots — they’re actually able to aim.
Good Morning
Got my h-orange hat.
I have seen more turkeys this year, and I live in a residential area. Guess they really are smarter.
I sort of enjoyed yesterday’s cold rain, ice pellets, and wind, but today it’s worse and I’ve got stuff to do!
On a good note, I don’t think my elderly in-laws will be making the 2.5 hour drive to have dinner with us, so at least I won’t have to fret if the turkey is dry or we “forget” to say a prayer before eating.
that they won’t see you matching tablecloth and napkins either.
:::sniff:::
I’m crushed. And they don’t really match – I refused to pay $9.99 for 4 napkins so I’m using an eclectic mix. Hopefully (he he) I’ll remember which ones I’ve used to sop up dog pee with.
Note to self: offer to bring napkins if going to dinner at the Nature house.
Are all your kids coming home for T-giving?
Yeah, they’re home, but Ryan has to work on Friday so she’s got to go back “home”. She lives in a house with 5 other students and they never got gas connected for heat because it was too expensive. :::this is me quietly seething and not saying anything about how dangerous space heaters are and how you could probably afford heat if everyone in the house was paying their fair share:::
let her see how concerned you are without actually saying it, you’ll be well on your way to practicing the fine art of Jewish Mother
Child-Rearing.
I’m working on it – I’ve got the menorah.
it’s the attitude.
Okay I’m heading out to the grocery.
Later.

In any case, this holiday I plan to do diddly-squat. Here’s wishing y’all a wonderful time today & throughout Blessings Day tomorrow. Enjoy!
The blood may be circulatin’, but I still can’t spell properLy.
and hope even more that this is the first and last t’day you’ll spend in FL.
Typhoid Mary.
Are you still at home?
… but left early. I’m so sick … ::whiny Bacall-like voice::
🙂
you can be whiny or you can be bacall-like but you can’t be both.
You should stay home tomorrow too so you won’t feel even worse having to work when most of BTers are off.
Well, I was whining … and my voice is low … You don’t think Bacall ever whined? 🙂
Yeah, I know … do you get Friday off as well? It’s kinda weird reading about Thanksgiving, since that was so long ago … 😉
Just watch Adams Family Values — the kids camp sequence says everything there is to say about Thanksgiving.
you’re sick — you can do what you want. You’ve had this for a while. Did you go to the doctor?
No … there’s nothing they can do for me, other than tell me to do what I’m currently doing … rest, fluids, manage symptoms. And I hate going to the dr almost as much as getting my hair cut.
poor O! Lots and lots of fluid — it really works. And when you can’t stand drinking it anymore, eat popsicles. They help your throat too. (uh … I assume you have popsicles up there?)
I forget … why do you hate getting your hair cut? And I never imagined you with Lady Godiva length hair but I will now 🙂
My favourite is chocolate. 🙂
I had a bad experience w/ my hair once … went from mid back to over the ears and was forever scarred. And I don’t like strangers touching my hair. 🙂
FINALLY he told me I should eat them because they would make my throat feel better.
fudgesicles and chocolate ice water popsicles … I like the latter.
I tried chocolate ice cream for the sore throat, but the whole cream thing wasn’t very appealing.
We used to just snap off an icicle from the overhaging eaves.

Love the photo!
I have no symptoms …
and I guess I must have been since we all know it’s all about you. 😛
no any more
when did that happen and who is it all about now?
oh, months ago. It’s all about everybody else now.
Are you ready for tomorrow?
It’s only about me when I say it is.
I’ve got the fixings but won’t do anything with them till tomorrow.
How about you — got your charades all picked out?
you know .. planning ahead for charades isn’t a bad idea. The problem with our family is the we all read the same books and see the same movies — so we guess things really easily. But if I planned ahead … I could come up with something more obscure. how evil …
Are you going to Indianapolis or Cincinnati?
Indy and Cincy are coming to Columbus (IN) which is where my older sister lives — just 30 minutes from us.
I love that I don’t have to travel on Thanksgiving. I love that everyone comes “home” for it. These days we even have family members who didn’t grow up here coming. We DO throw a good Thanksgiving. Despite the charades 😉
Maybe you should suggest charades at YOUR gathering.
STOP — don’t hit me …

because mixing alcohol and charades is well known to be deadly.
I suppose we ought to move to the left.
This is a bad one too … sending get wells! {{{{ww}}}}
I’m not sure I’m cut out for these three-day weeks. They sure take it out of you.
Just what sort of other reaction were you hoping for? Inquiring (read: nosy) minds want to know. 🙂
Congratulations on your new journey, ‘soup! You’re a far braver being than I.
Yay!!!
(you have mail)
Glad to hear the good news, MT! Hope you see stabilization soon.
Just a thought: you might want to watch your dairy intake ’til then, as it produces mucus. Also make sure your indoor air isn’t too dry.

Thanks. One of them is sitting on my lap right now purring. He is white, and he is quite big. His name is Sauvage, which is “wild” in French.

25 or 6 to 4 — Chicago
“Water Music” Suite: Allegro Maestoso (comp. Handel) — Canadian Brass
“Water Music” : Bouree (comp. Handel) — Wendy Carlos
You Take Me Up — Thompson Twins
Need You Tonight — INXS
Follow You, Follow Me — Genesis
Down in Yon Forest — The Voice Squad
(Okay, the last one is technically a Christmas carol, and so it should be too early for that one, but this is a beautiful rendition of a little known song…)

Hope everyone has a safe and (relatively sane) holiday…
I love your lists because they’re so diverse. But two Water Music’s in a random?
I may have to dig out my really old Chicago albums.
Dinner for 25 sounds like fun when it’s not at your house.
especially from both my Canadian Brass and “Well Tempered Synthesizer” collections…
Weather permitting (and right now it looks positive), my oldest greatniece (12 going on 25) will be leading a post-dinner/pre-dessert walk; that should be interesting. My sister just moved to a new house in a new neighborhood, so there’s a lot of territory to explore…
Or are you off brining your turkeys?
I was off seasoning my grouper.
What have you been off doing today?
I’m here, and completely turkey-less.
And oooo, I just got a hint of sun breaking through the clouds. Com’on sun!
I’m here and I’ve never brined a turkey. But I’ve heard good things about it.
Trot on over here.
