Peter Baker gives the President advice on how to rescue his Presidency. It’s all fine and good, except for one thing. Baker looks back at how Reagan and Clinton recovered from the midterms of 1986 and 1994, respectively. Reagan and Clinton were probably the greatest communicators in our Presidential history. By comparison, George W. Bush is a chimpanzee. The bully pulpit is almost totally useless to him. It’s not just his total lack of communication skills, it’s his total lack of credibility. No one believes a word his says.
Sure, there are still a few people willing to go buy some duct tape and a few hundred gallons of spring water anytime the administration yells, “Boo”. But that game is tired. Here is how the Establishment wants Bush to act:
Like Clinton, he has identified issues on which he thinks he can meet the opposition in the middle, including the minimum wage, education, immigration, energy and lobbying. But Bush has also signaled that he will fight over issues such as judicial nominations.
“Clinton had an imperative in ’96 to get reelected,” said Steve Elmendorf, a top House Democratic strategist at the time. “Bush, his imperative is more about his legacy. That gives him more running room to move to the center if he wants to and leave his party behind, because he doesn’t have to run for reelection.”
As long as both sides run to the center, the Beltway will be happy. But God forbid that the Democrats act like the suddenly empowered battered wives that they are. And heaven forbid that Bush stand by his principles and refuse to sell out his party.
Bush will have no legacy, he will accomplish nothing. He is incapable of seizing the moment and leading the nation. He has very few political skills. He has even less political flexibility. Dollars to donuts he will get bogged down obstructing justice and vetoing popular legislation. If you haven’t figured out he is a loser by now, you’ll never learn to judge a man’s character.
You don’t make a legacy on how much you compromise on bland band-aid solutions. You make a legacy by the ideas that you bring to reality. Bush has brought nothing to reality but Freddy’s most sadistic nightmares. His legacy will be nothing more than shattering the belief that the title President of the United States confers automatic honor or wisdom. He will go down in history merely as the one who degraded his office beyond the gloomiest imaginings of earlier observers.
When that whiny, arrogant voice comes out of the radio or TV these days, the automatic response is, “Why would anybody ask him anything?” He has done for America’s reputation in the world what Hitler did for Germany’s: it will take generations to recover the respect and credibility we once had.
There is only one way for Bush to save his legacy, and not much time to do it. IF that is what he cares about.
Only Nixon could go to China. Right?
Only Bush can save the environment.
Seriously, even if Al Gore were to become President in 2008, he would have huge opposition against any plans to fix the environment. But, Bush, the oilman, he could come out and say that he saw Al Gore’s movie and he wanted to start a discussion. Invite Gore and a dozen scientists to Camp David for a week. Leave Camp David with a comprehensive set of plans to do away with oil-based economy, cut CO2, etc.
He would leave office as the guy that saved the environment.
It’s already written, signed, sealed and delivered to the printer…worst president EVER
Bwahahahahahahahaha…gasp…choke…whewwwwww…
When this happens…
pink floyd: animals
well, yeah. But, he could.
Bush has no chance to redeem himself from being the worst president ever. Even if he signs legislature correcting Medicare – Part D, No Child Left Behind and so on, Bush can’t give up his biggest folly, the Iraqi Occupation. He certainly has never had any wise domestic or foreign affairs counsel. The man is not going to change his focus on appearances and fooling the people to goals that employs real policies that address real problems.
Do people remember LBJ more for Vietnam or the Civil Rights act? It’s kind of a mixed bag, but it would be theoretically possible for Bush to get to such an endpoint. I would say the chances are worse than 3,720 to 1, though.
No matter when he leaves office, it will do our environment a whole lot more, than expecting him to try & solve a problem he arrogantly helped create. It would also let him leave without solving his problem of being the stupidest animal I`ve ever heard of, [not that there`s a solution to stupidity]. He is OUR legacy. Advocating a position that would let him leave in glory is a little out there, no? Until he could go & clean up all the depleted uranium in Iraq wearing only the underwear he borrowed from Saddam, he has no business being involved in anything but his inconvenient truth, which turned out to be lies.
…is hard work especially when you suck.”
See my post ‘Chimp with a Gun!’ and stop kiddin’ yerself that Bush is anything more than a vicious, they are you know, chimp.
