The Bush administration has decided to propose listing the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, putting the U S government on record as saying that global warming could drive one of the world’s most recognizable animals out of existence.
Youngest asklet’s name translates to Polar Bear from Old Norse (it literally translates to Sea Bear, but Polar Bears are the only ones that description fits for).
Hey there RF … I don’t get by here enough lately to keep up w/everyone but try to read through when I get the chance. Hope you’re doing well down there!
And why does it not surprise me you’d like the Pee-Wee pic? (hehe) Of course we had to watch the Xmas Special last week (as we do every year) … now that’s one special special!
Glad you liked them, Andi! I’ll need to get some more uploaded and actually contribute them to the dog blog this week … even though we didn’t manage to get a pic of Pepa the Santa Dog (yet) … maybe she’ll cooperate on NYear’s eve and wear a party hat and something flashy.
Seems that seahorse was popular, but it’s s beautiful piece … I also need to get some pics of the new glass hummingbirds I found at World Market last Fri as I was finishing up my shopping … they’re quite stunning as well!
Turned on the 9pm Olbermann, expecting one of the repeats (but needing a Keith fix bad), and was surprised to find he came off vacation to do a special show on Ford’s passing plus some other issues. Quite pleasant to see, I must admit…
Got to hit the hay in a bit — I need to start getting myself moving earlier in the day, especially since it looks like the spouse will actually be returning to work shortly after the first of the year (fingers crossed for luck)…
Winter has been ‘odd’ here, Cali … if we get no snow before the end of the year (this week!) it will be a record lowest snowfall for the month since 189-something. We’ve had bouts of cold, then back to warmish and damp … not what we usually expect this time of year.
Lol, I did exactly the same thing with KO… my listing said it was another best of special comments, but I caught most of him live after all. I, too, had been having a major KO withdrawal, so what a pleasant surprise! Not that I begrudge him some extended time off one bit, but we’ve been missing him sorely, even with all the busyness of the holidays around here! Too bad they put him in even more of the Gerald Ford Hagiography Club … I fear I am going to be quite sick of it before they finally plant the old man next week … I’m with Booman entirely on that FP open thread post!
well I don’t drink gin so I guess the vodka gimlet woule be my choice ot if I am going to do that just wave teh vermouth bottle over the glass and give me some really fine straight vodka. LOL
but not crazy about martinis — when I was drinking my drink of choice was a gin & tonic; that was the spouse and my traditional drink on our long-distance train trips. (The Metformin I’m taking for the Big D says to avoid alcoholic beverages, so I haven’t had a drink in about 3 months now…probably helping the weight loss, but I do feel left out at times…)
Hi BR,
I didn’t recognize your handle right off the bat. But checking back in your comments, I now recall seeing your introduction last month.
Good to see you in the cafe.
Well Blue Redhead, here`s one from a few days ago. The moon is from the twenty fifth I think, but there are four other layers of different photos I put together. I posted it lat at night for Teach & Kidspeak, so you may not have seen it. I usually don`t repost ones twice but you can be the exception.
Hey dada, Yes the layer with the moon is from the new cam. It`s a Nikon D2H. The up-thread shot is not modified , but both were taken with a 300mm 2.8 Nikon lens. I`m just getting used to it but I`ve yet to go pick up my speedlight from a friend, so I`m restricted on my reef shots for right now. I hope you`re ready for a new few feet of snow coming your way. [That`s what I heard on the tube.]
Happy New Year
Hey there Sir Knuckle of Head! Gorgeous shots you have there and I’m pea green w/envy that you managed to capture that hummingbird! I’ve been unsuccessful at every try to get them when they hang out in the garden … even if I did manage some passable goldfinch pics this past fall.
Hope all is well with you and yours out your way! And have a great new year’s! Ours will be a quiet one at home, which is what we prefer … skip the loonies, drunks and cops entirely.
IVG, Bonne Heureuse Annee . I`ve got the range down, now I just have to get the right light. I move the feeders around to get the hummingbirds to reflect their colors more from my vantage point, but then I miss the shot. I`ll soon get the shot I want, though. Thank you very much for the kudos.
Thanks Cabin Girl, when I get the shot I`m looking for, I`ll post it for you. Here`s a preview. It`s not a nice one, but I want the shot from head-on like this.
Hopefully everybody is doing OK today. This isn’t exactly my hump day — I had yesterday off, although the grandson was over so it seemed like a lot more work than it was.
So, I’m going to complain about how long these grueling three-day work weeks are.
I can relate to that. My kitty is not allowed to jump on the jigsaw-puzzle-doing table and is in quite a snit about it! Not that she’s spoiled totally rotten or anything…
What a cutie! Definitely looks like someone who can hold her own even against a terrible mom who sends her to kitty jail during meal times! Tsk tsk. (When I was living in a studio apartment in Monterey, Shadow had to go to kitty jail for jumping on the bed and waking me up all night long. She still tells anyone who will listen how I abused her.
Pretty good and same to you AF! Aside from the puzzles, just hanging and catching up around the house… enjoying my last week on medical leave. Wish the hands were showing more improvement, but a little is better than nothing. Also, I can report highly stressful interactions with representatives of our tragic so-called medical system. Just for the record.
Hey there dear MM! I’ve missed you the last few months (as my RL has been a work-hell extravaganza), and great to see you posting wonderful kitty pics again. You know, even with my allergies to cats, I have fallen in love with one of C’s parents’ farm cats (“Momma”) … she’s a very petite, totally black cat w/great green eyes … and she acts more like a dog and always greets me warmly when I see her out there. If they would let us have her, I’d take her home in an instant! But she’s an ex-stray, outdoors cat, so probably best where she is now, but what a sweetie!
I hope your recovery from the surgery has been going well and that it has made a positive difference for you after going through all that trauma!
Man I’m having a time keeping my head up above the blues today. Was sick much of last week then jumped into holiday merrymaking as best I could but didn’t get the ramp-up time due to the illness-hadn’t really figured out what I was going to do about the holiday beforehand. Friends were happily into the season in a way that I envied. I did party lightly and got to spend time with the maybe man and other pals but feel totally wasted and dull. Will try for some quality sleep and take up the adventure again tomorrow with more spirit I hope.
The holidays can be very stressful. We’re trying to spread out our entertaining. On the days in between company, we are very much taking it easy! Sleep and more sleep should do the trick.
thanks for your kind words-I’m still up but only because I’m cooking some chicken casserole comfort food and it’s taking longer than I thought. When I get this tired I forget how I’m connected with others in this world.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Such beautiful animals. We need to save them and the many others who will be gone because of the insanity.

and hangs around where there are frogs — now who could tha be?
Gee, I dunno… but it sounds like a job for MaryB.
Hi there Andi, hope your vacation daze are going well for you!
PS. Doggie Bone Blogging from the other night over at my place, if you want to see the pups in action.
I had CabinGirl in mind. I have it on authority that she kisses frogs.
Did you have a good Xmas?
I’m checking out your place now, though it will be a bit before everything loads.
Turn my back for a minute, and look at the abuse I get… 😉
Is that a fly in the frog’s martini?
Hi CabinGirl!!!!
Hi refinish! How are you this evening?
Pretty good. Getting ready to go run an errand and wil be back in a few. Hope you are doing well also.
over olives. And this wasn’t abuse, it was charmingly done teasing.
I’ll have to remember that the next time I make martinis.
How’s the vacation going? Are you still off all of next week too?
Yep, I’m off until the 8th.
Do the boys go back to school next week?
where is the link to your place?
never mind, I found it.LOL Love the PeeWee Herman picture.
Hey there RF … I don’t get by here enough lately to keep up w/everyone but try to read through when I get the chance. Hope you’re doing well down there!
And why does it not surprise me you’d like the Pee-Wee pic? (hehe) Of course we had to watch the Xmas Special last week (as we do every year) … now that’s one special special!
and I was quite taken with your seahorse ornament.

I wonder, wonder..
I have a feeling very few of the women in the pond would turn down a martini on the right occasion. LOL
I don’t think you can come up with an ocassion that I want one. Closest I’d come is a vodka gimlet.
well I don’t drink gin so I guess the vodka gimlet woule be my choice ot if I am going to do that just wave teh vermouth bottle over the glass and give me some really fine straight vodka. LOL

Very likely true!
I was thinking more of the frog (-kissing) Andi alluded to.
Until proved otherwise, I’m going with that being a picture of CG and her special frog.
And a good choice it is, Andi (not much physical resemblance, though).
the woman or the frog? 😛
I’m having a good chuckle to myself.
Maybe I’ve already said too much…
you are a wise man, ask.
Good evening everyone. Thought i would say hello before i sit down to watch TV and fall asleep. Hope everyones day went well.
Hi BR,
I didn’t recognize your handle right off the bat. But checking back in your comments, I now recall seeing your introduction last month.
Good to see you in the cafe.
Hi there, Blue Redhead,

we haven`t met, but it`s my pleasure, really. Especially since you are also a head. Here`s tonight`s moon for you.
thank you – and i always love pictures of the moon.
Well Blue Redhead, here`s one from a few days ago. The moon is from the twenty fifth I think, but there are four other layers of different photos I put together. I posted it lat at night for Teach & Kidspeak, so you may not have seen it. I usually don`t repost ones twice but you can be the exception.

is that w/ the new cam you’re trying out?
Hey dada, Yes the layer with the moon is from the new cam. It`s a Nikon D2H. The up-thread shot is not modified , but both were taken with a 300mm 2.8 Nikon lens. but welcome… 🙂
Hi folks!!!!! Hope everyone had a decent day.
Here is a link to some calenders I did. Of course they are political. LOL
http://www.cafepress.com/refinish69/2304444
that first calendar! 🙂
Thanks!!!!
Am I happy yet?
Hopefully everybody is doing OK today. This isn’t exactly my hump day — I had yesterday off, although the grandson was over so it seemed like a lot more work than it was.
So, I’m going to complain about how long these grueling three-day work weeks are.
Complain away. LOL We will make sure the grandkids come back next week also. LOL
How’s the water? It’s been one of those weeks. Barkeep, three mojitos and a floating lounge in the corner if you would.
The water’s fine but for mojitos you’ll have to hope that CabinGirl comes back by. In the meantime you can have one of FM’s 27 beers.
That’ll make for a fine start. Just so long as I don’t go other way, mojitos to beer. Thanks.
Hello from jigsaw puzzle heaven.
What a great shot, mm!
Hey, TT! Can’t claim credit for this one, though! My son found it somewhere or other.
I can see one of my cats doing something like this. They’re always walking on whatever I’m trying to read.
I can relate to that. My kitty is not allowed to jump on the jigsaw-puzzle-doing table and is in quite a snit about it! Not that she’s spoiled totally rotten or anything…
Of course she’s not spoiled. It’s not as if one of my cats never chews me out when I put her in the basement during all meals.
What??? Not allowed on the table during meals??? Mean Mommie!
Here’s my spoiled darling with a Christmas ornament…
And that kid downthread keeps pulling my tail!
That’s funny, I like that!
How did Andrew like the train?
Actually, he wasn’t so thrilled with the train, but the bazillion trucks he received sent him into orbit.
that Andrew is always adorable.
Hope you’ve been having an enjoyable holiday season.

Night Andi!
My pillow beckons, so I bid you all a good night.
