Went to a great political discussion dinner yesterday. The hottest question: Could we live more simply? I was amazed at the guests who said: “I don’t want to.” Is it an attitude these days?
I got up this morning wondering why the idea of global warming has become so popular but the idea of doing something about it failed to take root? Just wondering as I drink my Starbucks!
I think people can respond to specific actions they can take that can have specific results — thus the popularity of recycling. At any rate, if people are usually limited in how much attention they will focus on any issue and for this one, I probably rather see them agitate for major energy policy changes.
Maybe the idea failed to take root becausse the car manufacturers lowered the prices on their gas-guzzling monster-sized SUVs, and the sheeple fell for it.
Actually, I think most people think it’s a good idea to do something up to the point where they have to actually change their habits. Using Andi’s recycling example, I remember when that first started, and my brother’s girlfriend’s mother (a southern belle transplanted to the northeast) went off about “No way am I recycling, What do they think, I’m going to pick through my trash to do that”. Apparently, it didn’t occur to her that you would sort the cans and bottles BEFORE putting them in to the trash…
As I head off to the kitchen to make my morning cappuccino. 🙂
My hometown of Palo Alto had the recycling center for quite some time (next to the landfill), but it wasn’t until they offered curbside pickup of common recyclables (such as newspapers, metal cans, plastic bottles, etc.) that the practice really took off — the recyclables are picked up the same day that the regular garbage is. And our apartment complex has several recycling bins; one for the cans/plastics and one for the newspapers — we still make regular trips to the local recycling center to take out things like cardboard boxes, styrofoam, batteries and stuff like that.
Need to get out of here shortly — today is my mom-in-law’s 75th birthday, so we’re going to try and find her a really nice gift; spouse already picked up a good card.
I am sitting at the kitchen table with my newly rejuvenated laptop, watching the cats watch the birds outside, and watching the dog watching the cats watching the birds outside.
They are calling for “brutally cold” weather here with daytime highs in the 40s and “biting” winds of up to 10-12 mph! ooooooooooo time to close down the schools.
Well, gee, I hope you have one of those monster-sized SUVs with 4 wheel drive so you can make it through the incredibly inclement weather to the stores. 🙂
Me too! But following our family rule of leaving something broken long enough and it might just fix itself…Colin took it apart and left it out for a couple of weeks while he was at school, then blew everything off with an air cannister and put it back together.
I’ll be interested to hear howyou think he’s changed after he gets back. Not that it’s public information or anything…and not that I’m nosy or anything. Family Man thinks I’m just a tactless yankee anyway.
It is a sickening stain you cast upon not only the honor of Robert E. Lee, but also the state of North Carolina by allowing the Washington Post article “At 200, Lee’s legacy still up for debate” to be published in your paper (on Jan. 20). It was the epitome of political correctness and negativism.
No state supplied more men, more materiel and more loyalty to the Confederacy during the War Between the States than North Carolina. Robert E. Lee is still revered in the South. He will always be. We cannot erase his nobility, no more than the altar of the demigod Lincoln in Washington could be destroyed.
Lee was against slavery and fought the war for independence. The war, like all wars, was over money, and the size of a greedy, centralized government. What we have today is a direct result of victorious Northern aggression. The North won; the people and the Constitution lost.
Please spare us loyal North Carolinians your liberal bias as pertains to our heroes. Robert E. Lee is second only to Christ, and once knowing the truth about either of them, you can never go back.
yep – life would certainly be much easier that way. My only real comfort lies in knowing the paper published this to get responses and I look forward to them. I couldn’t even begin to formulate one.
Can you respect someone who did their job and did it well when the job was wrong to begin with? Might get into the whole “I was just following orders” debate…how much personal responsibility do people have to assume for the decisions of those above them?
I guess I could respect even someone like Lee for their place in history…but we don’t have to put him up on a pedestal…
Just got a call from the vet and Hopeful does have cancer. That was the bad news. The good news is that it is a form of skin cancer that usually does not spread so that they should be able to remove it and it shouldn’t have too much effect on his life span. He goes in for surgery on Wednesday and we’ll know for sure then.
has been so anxious about her namesake that she’s been unable to continue tearing off little pieces of the wallboard and has been moping around waiting to hear the results. She said “if I can survive getting my lady bits removed in one fell swoop, then Hopey can get through this.”
he appreciates HJ’s worrying about him but that HJ can stop because Jim and I are doing enough for the whole universe. He also points out that he “lost” his boy parts about 12 years ago plus he’s had two other operations and a slew of stitches in a foot so he’s way ahead in the pissing-on-the-vet game.
I was reading through the blogs on my prep period and an interesting thing popped up. BT and myDD, no problem. dKos: blocked by the school district for profanity. D***! I knew we were more friendly, but I guess we are more careful in our language as well.
Good morning…you get up early!

the more people will do them.

Hope everyone has a great day…
Good morning!
I’m back home in my cabin the snow today. CBtY grumbled his way off to school already, and it’s pretty quiet.
3 days till I leave for El Paso. Woo-hoo!
Yay! The laptop is back from the dead! How did he fix it?
Oh, 40s. Gee, how will yu ever survive? Better not go outside, you might get frostbite.
Don’t worry CG. Me and my debit card will go shopping today because the stores will be deserted. We’ll survive okay.
Well, gee, I hope you have one of those monster-sized SUVs with 4 wheel drive so you can make it through the incredibly inclement weather to the stores. 🙂
Good morning everyone.
Down here it’s 16 outside right now, although we’ll be up in the 40’s by this afternoon. Winter ya got to love it.
CG — do you get to do any hiking too?
SN — is that the laptop the cat killed?
FM — cold but not snow? Too sad.
Yes – Colin fixed it! So what if the shift key on the left side is a pain in the ass.
At least it’s working. I thought it was completely destroyed.
Me too! But following our family rule of leaving something broken long enough and it might just fix itself…Colin took it apart and left it out for a couple of weeks while he was at school, then blew everything off with an air cannister and put it back together.
Smart mother equals smart kids.
You have a ‘healer’ in the family — how cool.
Did you tell smoochie to keep her distance?
Yes. But now the 20-pounder reclines on my keyboard the very second I get up to answer the phone. That can’t be good.
Maybe you should try sometype of aroma around the computer that cats don’t like. Whatever it would be I don’t know, but there has to something.
Hmm, what type of aroma would you suggest?
eau de sniff. Based on his two encounters, he seems to be pretty off-putting.
I was hoping you would know. Maybe then I could keep Cat away from certain places in the house.
No hiking for me. 2 days of parenting seminar and family conference stuff, followed by a little graduation thing on Sunday morning.
I’ll be interested to hear howyou think he’s changed after he gets back. Not that it’s public information or anything…and not that I’m nosy or anything. Family Man thinks I’m just a tactless yankee anyway.
When did I ever say that? Yankee yes, but tactless never. 🙂
Some day this will come back to haunt me, I’m almost certain.
I wouldn’t worry about it. 🙂
If you don’t mind telling us, I’d be really interested to hear both your and his take on the experience.
What SN and Andi said.
Well, that’s starting to look like a unanimous request, isn’t it? 🙂
I’m jealous of his absoluteness. I can’t even come up with that kind of certainty for the knowing my first name.
yep – life would certainly be much easier that way. My only real comfort lies in knowing the paper published this to get responses and I look forward to them. I couldn’t even begin to formulate one.
I could sure formulate a response, but I’m afraid the Southern gentleman wouldn’t find it propah.
Can you respect someone who did their job and did it well when the job was wrong to begin with? Might get into the whole “I was just following orders” debate…how much personal responsibility do people have to assume for the decisions of those above them?

Just my $0.02…
Gotta go, FMom is awake and I’ve got to get the trash to the curb before the truck gets here.
See Ya’ll later.

Thanks to everybody who has asked.
That’s good that it’s removable!
(delurking) That’s probably as good of news as you could get. Thank goodness 🙂
I’m glad to hear it. I hope the removal goes smoothly.
I’m so happy to hear there is something they can do for Hopeful.
Of course once he gets home he might have to have you carry him on the morning walks until he gets back up on his feet.
Of course, I’m going to worry until we know for sure that it hasn’t spread but I am relieved that it wasn’t a melanoma.

First off, Good afternoon all.
I was reading through the blogs on my prep period and an interesting thing popped up. BT and myDD, no problem. dKos: blocked by the school district for profanity. D***! I knew we were more friendly, but I guess we are more careful in our language as well.
try to log into My Left Wing. I think there is a MSOC filter.
You shouldn’t be able to get Bootrib cuz I’m not always known for using five letter or larger words during my most trying moments.
Anybody home?
Lounge is open – bring your dancing shoes.
