A nice, sunny morning here. Springtime is back!
Have a nice day!
The temps are warm but nothing much is green yet.
And a good day to you.
Good morning, Melanchthon and Andi,
They say will get to above 70 today – weird spring.
BTW; what an astonishing photo!
Yes, I think orchids and olivia were made for each other.
were more than a centimeter across.
Autumn Bird Orchid
We mis-identified these.
We thought they were Hare’s Ears, but further delving changed our classification to Parson’s Bands Orchids. We have lots, either way.
may not be as showy but they are still very lovely.
They’re amazing. I think I read your post on this one, that it’s trying to attract a bug w/ that hairy bit there.
Good day all.
We found our first Autumn Bird Orchid a few weeks ago. Since then I’ve done a bit of web surfing and found out that they evolved to attract the male Thynnine wasp by both looking like the flightless female and producing a chemical to mimic the wasps phermone signature.
Pretty tricky, huh?
I like the tricks you ladies play on me though.
Nature is a wonderful thing.
Actually, the “trick” here is being played by the flower, which if assigned some sort of sex would come closest to being a hermaphrodite.
Females of any species rarely need to fool the males. Plant species, however, are more than willing to take advantage of the “eagerness” of their male-sexed distant cousins. Apparently looking like a girl insect is cheaper, and probably more reliable, than making nectar.
Keres
“Females of any species rarely need to fool the males.”
That`s what I meant, the males of most species are always willing & wanting, but it`s always nice to pretend the “trick`s are what did it.
My comment was more of a little humor, than serious. That`s why I mentioned how grand nature was. I surely hope I didn`t offend you.
Good morning Melanchthon, Andi & Ask.
With our respective time changes, it’s only 7:30pm here, instead of 9:30 like it was when the morning cafe was posted a few weeks ago.
I guess that means we’ll have more time together. 😉
Ackkkkkk. It’s a giant thumb!
Actually, it’s a very small scorpion – which is the only size we get here. This is probably the biggest, and certainly the fattest, one I’ve seen thus far.
I really wanted to see some scorpians on vacation but the gazillion lizards we saw must have eaten them all.
Is that a new religious sect?
The scorpians, I mean.
I didn’t actually handle the scorpion, if that’s what you mean. I generally don’t handle wildlife, poisionous or otherwise. Except for the copperhead snake I recently had to relocate out from under where Luna sleeps at night. Elbow-lenght welding gloves come in handy for lots of things.
I was wondering about the finger so close to the critter, but my comment was simply trying to make fun of Andi’s spelling.
Are they very poisonous, BTW?
Their barb wouldn’t actually puncture human skin, so no one’s too interested in how poisionous they are.
We’re fortunate in Tasmania in that we don’t have the horrifically poisionous arachnids that they have on the mainland. Not to mention 14 of the 15 world’s most poisionous snakes.
Yes, it’s the early-morning-who-cares-how-you-spell cult. 😉
Where you were, there’s two types of scorpians – the big yellow ones that are not too poisionous, and the little grey ones that are very poisionous and like to get in your shoes overnight.
And then there’s the giant centipedes that the dogs used to harry while I madly tried to call them off.
We didn’t see very many insects, other than bees. Lots of birds, though — which might explain the lack of insects.
Most of the insects, and lots of other critters, there are nocturnal.
Good morning Melanchthon, Andi, ask and keres. I think I got everybody.
How is everybody today?
Hey there, FM.
Early to bed last night, but waking up waaay too early today.
Play hooky, maybe.
Hi ask.
Hooky sounds good to me. I’m just getting my first cup of coffee, but I feel like going back to sleep.
How’s everything at the FamilyHome?
Morning Andi.
Things are quiet at the moment, but I’ve got to get FMom up in another 30 minutes.
How are things in the woods?
Quiet here too. The dogs are enjoying the warm weather by spending most of their time outside.
You’re going back to work today aren’t you? I’m sure you’re ready to dig into all that work. 🙂
Yup, vacation’s over. And since I can’t retire yet, I guess I’ll have to be ready to go back.
I’ve gotten FMom up and I’ve got to help her get ready for a beauty shop appointment and then later I have to take her to get some adjustments on her dentures.
Hope everybody has a good day in the pond.
Geeze, i am so jealous. What a whirlwind of a life you lead. 😉
Morning everyone!
Is that photo rated NC-17?
All orchid pics are.
Good morning.
That one is especially so!
I’m sorry you have to go back to work and you can’t play with me all day. I guess that means I should try to get something done as well. 🙁
Or you could do nothing all day and feel immensely superior to my wishing-it-was-retired self.
How was Ryan’s St. Paddy’s trip?
It was hurried, snowy and fun.
Well, I better get started on my busy day of sleeping, pretending to clean the house, and general animal wrangling.
