Surprise surprise:
WASHINGTON – President Bush vetoed legislation to pull U.S. troops out of
Iraq Tuesday night in a historic showdown with Congress over whether the unpopular and costly war should end or escalate. It was a day of high political drama, falling on the fourth anniversary of Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech declaring that major combat operations had ended in Iraq.
In only the second veto of his presidency,
Only veto the most popular shit.
So. He’s vetoed an exception to the budget made to indulge his inability to make projections of what he’s going to do after four years plus of ‘getting it on’. I understand he had to be given an opportunity to clean up the mess by evacuating Iraqis who would be killed once the U.S. left : grudgingly. Not because a budget exception should have been necessary – costs were totally foreseeable – but because Dems were playing ‘not to lose’ against an opponent who gives his all when it comes to forcing his way : not smart.
So what now ?
Hate to tell you this.
It’s his mess : still. He doesn’t want ‘interference’. I’d hate to force assistance down his throat.
He’s in charge – just the way he likes it.
Impeach, impeach, impeach.
I know, I know, but sometimes I have to say what should be done, even to a friendly audience, just so I can sleep at night.
I’ve emailed all of my representatives about my thoughts concerning the veto. I hope everyone lets them know how they feel about his actions. I’m very tired of wasting lives – I thought Vietnam taught us something…
well, now that he has finally correctly applied a right of the Presidency and not usurped powers that he does not have, it is now up to the Congress to exert its powers. And it does have choices that are proscribed to it in the Constitution. Lets focus for a minute on the “funding” power. The house has the power to withhold funding and thus to create a balance. Will they act or will they fold. It appears that because they (the representatives in the house) won’t assume their right out of fear. The majority of the public has spoken and continues to speak but obviously not loudly enough. For example, given the time constriction (less that two years left!) why not now submit a new bill that has funding only for the next two months and then requires the president to reapply for continuing funding? Why doesn’t the members of the house and the senate hold an ongoing series of press conferences in which they continue to present their positions on this veto?
And I know that there are tons of additional questions that the public would love to see being asked in Public!
what say you?
Not that I expect it to do a bit of good, I called my reps about overriding the veto.
Rep Bonner’s office sounded shocked that anyone would call about it.
Sen Shelby’s office had to check his position (or pretend to) before saying that he stands with the president.
Sen Session’s office just gave me a quick no he won’t.
