Our woods are usually fairly fire-safe from now through the first fall frost due to the high humidity soon to arrive. A fire dept. to the north had a problem last week with a train that apparently had a hot wheel and set small fires along the track for several miles before the train crew was contacted. I was part of a fire crew on a similar incident several years ago and found that its really not a good idea to drive up the right-of-way in a brush fire truck. The gravel on both sides of the track sometimes behaves very much like quicksand.

          • Family Man
Family Man on May 6, 2007 at 9:26 am

I can never remember any large fires around here, but just like people who say it hasn’t flooded here in 100 years, there’s always that possibility it will happen.

I’ve been enjoying your pictures of the parade.  I like that one that has the old truck in it.  I’d love to have that to ride around town in.  That would show everyone around here, I’ve come up in the world. 🙂

Thanks! The truck builder (Dusty) is, IMHO, a master of whimsy in automotive art. He calls this one Peddler Wagon. He has an old 1930’s flatbed he calls the Hillbilly Truck, complete with moonshine crock. Once in a while, he rides his completely restored WWII army Harley around town. I don’t have a photo of it yet. The guy is quite a mechanic and collector. He’s been trying to sell me a huge 4 door 1931 Buick with headlights the size of hubcaps and a straight-eight engine. Its like something out of the John Dillinger outlaw legends.

It would be a neat toy, but there are multiple reasons why I need to pass on this one, not the least of which is the potential wrath of Mrs. Dem;-)

I’d love to have the Hillbilly Truck, and the potential wrath is the best reason for not purchasing the Buick. 🙂

I took French in the 9th grade and was a miserable failure at it.  Although, my teacher told me for what I did learn, my accent was less than fair.  Oddly I felt good about that. 🙂

Do you ever wonder what the weather is like or if it’s day or night anywhere in the world.

    Look here http://www.die.net/earth/

As I type, it looks like Keres is have a cloudy morning and Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Iowa are having more storms.

    • keres
keres on May 6, 2007 at 8:15 pm

It was cloudy this morning, but the clouds have since burned off and I’m enjoying the sunshine (woohoo).

Luna and I will head to Hobart later today for some walking and shoping, which is what constitutes the usual exitement around these parts.

      • JimF
JimF on May 6, 2007 at 8:28 pm

Glad the weather is nicer now than when the satellite snapped the photo. Does Luna get to participate in the shopping, or is she just going along to give advice?

        • keres
keres on May 6, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Luna is allowed in the Animal Tucker Box, where I’ll be getting food for her and Albert.  Other establishments tend to deny entry to the hirsute quadrapeds amongst us (so, you best keep upright).

Her counterpoint to my shopping efforts is to be tied to a parking meter or street sign and draw admiring hoards.  It’s not unusual for me to come out of a store and find her belly up amongst her adorers.

Also, there are several lovely walks around Hobart and we do at least one per trip.
