Say hello to the newest member of the Frog Pond
My answer to the question:
I played the trumpet for many years as a child, rather badly I’m afraid. And my paternal grandfather, after who I’m named, was a professional trumpet player. (Yes, his name was boran v1.0.
Hola v2.0 π Love the trumpet. I always wanted to learn and am still envious of members of mariachi groups here.
Hay, Manny! I’m sorry that I didn’t take up the guitar instead.
Like o said, tis never too late. I’ve been self-teaching for a few months and can now strum a couple of old ranchera songs. That’s all I’m really interested in learning anyways. Otherwise there would be no time for slacking
Did someone say slacking. π
Hiya Manny and b2 V2.0 π
I play and played lots of instruments … the two I played regularly in bands (many, many bands) and still play today are:
The first instrument I learned to play was the clarinet, which I didn’t like at all b/c I was always breaking the reeds. π
I’ve also played percussion, and some tuba and trombone just for fun.
And I taught myself how to play the piano — not well, but passable. I have a little keyboard as well.
Very multi-talented. π
and music appreciation when I was a kid. Was a great creative outlet. π
I really tried at learning the piano when I was a teen, but being the lazy person I am, I always went back to stuff I knew how to play. Stuck in a rut, so to speak.
hellooooolivia! A dusty trumpet? The horror! π
well, at least the guitar isn’t … π
I’m a v.10, and I bang away at the piano and can hit some cords on a guitar. I’ve also owned a banjo for almost 30 years, and never learned to play it.
How’s it going Manny & Boran?
How’re things?
It’s going fair. I’m trying to stay awake at the moment. Didn’t get a wink of sleep last night.
How’re things up in the cold north? π
Is that one of the sayings from that list you pointed out … π
Maybe you could just give in to it, and have a nap. You have to be worn out!
Yep I hear fair to middlin’ all the time. π
Can’t give into a nap today. If I do, I sleep until 11 or 12 and then be up all night again. Gotta stick it out.
I’m learning … π
Your learn the north, I’ll learn the south.
Yeah, that’s not good. It’s gotta be a fine line between total slacking and staying awake.
I’ve already learned the north, eh?
Hola Family Man, perhaps Omir can give you some banjo lessons via the tubes π
Things are going okay here, just trying to brace myself for the heat. We got some rain on Monday and it cooled things down but this weekend we’ll be flirting with 110. Blech! How goes it with you?
It’s going fair. Its been hot here too, but not 110. Luckily we’ve had low humidity.
I’m afraid Omir wouldn’t have the patience required to teach me. That learning is work, which is a bad word for a slacker. π
I started on sax; baritone is my favorite but I’ve played all from soprano to bass. Haven’t played sax much in the last few years though. I also play tuba, and that’s become my main instrument.
Happy Wednesday esquimaux! I tried abit of tenor but it was too deep for my liking, getting stuck with bass-line notes during a fun song is the pits π And its been my experience that the tuba players always have the most fun hehe
(great sig line, btw)
I played baritone for a bit, had much better range than I did on the trumpet.
I played the flute for a couple of years, but I’d like to learn to play a Djembe or other drum. Sadly, I have no rhythm. :>)
I’m in the market for guitar lessons for KamaKid. I bought her one a couple of years ago, but she is too easily frustrated trying to teach herself to play it. I figure if I can get her started with a basics class, she might get better. She is way more musically talented than I ever was.
hi Kamakhya! you should take lessons with her, that would be a cool bonding-type thing. Plus you would have a chance to work on the rhythm thing π
Hole Manny! I seriously considered it, and maybe I will, but the lessons are kind of expensive and I’m lazy. ;>) One of her school’s teachers teaches a drumming class at a nearby music school on the side. Since KamaKid also loves drumming, we might just check out one of his classes if I can find the funds.
I’ve always liked the sax. It’s such a sexy instrument. ;>)
oy vey! That was supposed to be Hola!
Yeah, but “Hole” was much funnier π
Autoharp – the refuge of the terminally un-musical. Unfortunately, I have enough arthritis in my wrists now that I can’t comfortably reach around to press the chord bars. I’m trying to teach myself to play it flat & cross-handed, but without too much success.
Hi Denim! I hope you’re able to master the new way soon, that’s a cool instrument, imo.
And I thought the kazoo was the refuge of the terminally un-musical? π
Cowbell.
More cowbell!
I’m feelin it, Manny. π
Feel like we haven’t chatted in ages. How are you and the familia doing? Hope Esperanza hasn’t been wreaking too much havoc lately.
She is definitely not a hot weather dog. Me either. π
The family is doing well. I have all of the kids here now, including the one from Cleveland. Yay!
My parents started me with piano lessons when I started school. Learning to read music isn’t so overwhelming when you are also learning to read words.
I’m glad I had the lessons, but I am living proof that you can practice piano for over ten years, and still be lousy at it.
hi hens teeth, good point about learning to read music and words at the same time. I’ve never had piano lessons, but I play a mean rendition of Chopsticks! π
Can someone explain to me how Rating a comment works? I’ve read the FAQ, and tried rating, but I’m doing something wrong, I think.
Hi WolverineBlue and welcome! After you click on the rating, are you hitting the “Rate All” button?
I think I just successfully did that. Thanks for the reply. I don’t quite get how this software works, but I’ll keep plugging away. Hard to teach on ol’ dog new tricks, I guess. LOL. Just glad to be here, where a die-hard leftist like me can feel welcome.
We’re happy to have you! Make sure you check out the New User Guides (one from soj, and the other from me) to hopefully answer any other questions you have using the Scoop software.
The Cafe/Lounge thread at the top right of the screen is a perpetual open thread with non-political chat so feel free to drop in anytime. Paz
Excellent! Thanks for the links. I will read them and absorb as best I can. I’ve been lurking for since 2005, but haven’t had “the nerve” to register or comment. But already I feel welcome. Thank you.
Just checked out your ratings page, which can be viewed by scrolling over your user-name at the top menu bar (between the ‘European Tribune’ and ‘Recent Comments’ links) – and your ratings worked, so Congrats!
So do you play any instruments? That’s the question for this week’s Welcome Wagon.
Played clarinet and trombone in high school band, but not since then. Just a listener now, mostly Jazz and House. Always wanted to learn guitar, but never seem to have the time. I envy those who can express themselves in such beautiful ways.
I notice under my Comments that I have a “Hidden Comment”. Does that mean I got troll-rated, or somehow said something inappropriate?
Hmm, don’t see anything hidden from you so not sure what that is.
Pretty much the only thing you’ll be troll-rated for around here is a direct personal attack on another user. It’s good net-etiquette, in my opinion, to use the “Warning-2” rating first to let someone know that they are skirting the line.
Welcome, WB!
No worries, I think that is a software glitch if you have received only one rating (two are required for it to show). It’s been some time since I last saw a 1 or 0-rating.
You got some mojo now, so it is probably no longer showing as hidden.
Why, thank you! I’m hoping to be here regularly, though time is always the resource I lack most. I really like much of what I read here, and look forward to learning a lot from y’all.
That said, I have to go now. I will check back in the Welcome Wagon next Wednesday. I really appreciate the warm welcome.
now I’m jealous. I’ve been here a couple of years and haven’t had any of my comments hidden. It’s a sure sign that I’m too boring for my own good.
LOL! Thanks for the hearty laugh.
It was a just a glitch, though, apparently. But you’re not alone, there … I, too, am just WAY too boring for my own good. May the Frog inspire us both to greater heights!
Got to go now. Maybe see you next Wednesday here in the Welcome Wagon? Take care.
Also, just checked out (and bookmarked) your blog. Am looking forward to checking in there often.
thx! [blush]
It’s a whopping 48F/9C inside the house this morning. And, if the amount of frost outside is anything to go by, it dropped below freezing sometime during the night.
Luna is, sensibly, still all curled up on the couch.
I’ve lit the fire and am having my first cup of tea in a vain attempt to achieve some level of warmth.
Oh, and no, I don’t play any instruments.
I’ve tried playing violin, piano, and guitar, in that order, but I’m just not musical. I understand music theory, and can carry a tune, but my hands are clearly meant for other things.
Although, if I could get a hold of one, I’d really like to play the Theremin.
Keres,
I think “Lothar & the Hand People” had a moment of fame using that instrument in the sisties.
Funkadelic
Keres, I do believe this relates to your choice of instruments, but please do not play it near anybody who may have a steel plate in their head.
This is from Lothar & the Hand People
“Soon thereafter, Conly convinced Emelin to play his theremin live for the first time, and the eerie, quavering tone of the device became the Hand People’s aural signature — although not always to the benefit of everyone in the audience. “We were at the Exodus one night, and whenever I’d play a theremin solo, this one guy would start thrashing around,” Emelin says. “He seemed to be going into ecstatic paroxysms. But as it turned out, he had a metal plate in his head, and the theremin was causing some kind of horrible short in his nervous system. When we found out, we felt terrible.”
I have a titanium plate in my neck. It could get interesting.
For those of you who have no idea what a Theremin sounds like, hark back to the funky rift in the Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations – that’s played on a Theremin.
Don’t say that to a woman with hot flashes, keres. It sounds looooooovely to me. π
You’re welcome to visit anytime you’d like. There’s supposed to be snow on the mountain later this week.
I’m there…making snow angels. Ahhh…
where’s mary? because the Royals beat the Cardinals yesterday!
I think she’s somewhere practicing her curling skills to get ready for the winter olympics π
