Judge Walton says ‘Do not pass Go, go directly to jail‘. Scooter Libby will not be free on bail pending appeal. It will still take six to eight weeks before Libby has to turn himself in and report to prison. The horror, the horror…a rich white dude might have to spend time behind bars. This could upset David Broder’s whole universe.
I expect a huge outpouring of outrage over this tremendous injustice. After all, if a made man like Scooter Libby can be put in prison with common arsonists and pederasts then a lot of other white dudes could go to prison, too. Who will protect their bungholes?
I’m sorry to make this about race and class, but I am really, really, really tired of hearing people make arguments that this man doesn’t deserve to do jail time. There is only one argument that makes any sense for why Libby shouldn’t do his jail time. And that is that he was only obstructing justice to protect his bosses, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. But that is not an argument for pardoning Libby; that is an argument for Bush and Cheney to do jail time as well.
It may well be that Bush is a heartless bastard that will let his fall guy do hard time while he pretends to be innocent. But that is a problem with Bush, not an excuse for Libby.
If Bush pardons him it should be an impeachable offense. Of course, the pardon is legal, but it amounts to a reward for obstruction of justice. It would be proof that Bush suborned perjury. And that is an impeachable offense.

Yes, and THEN the democrats will do something. Why, they might even send….
wait for it…
wait for it…
wait for it….
A STERNLY WORDED LETTER!
(yeah, it wasn’t worth the wait. Nor will it be worth the wait when the inevitable happens.)
OTOH, i can’t wait to hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth. Who knows, maybe Libby will pull a Budd Dwyer, but I doubt he has the honor.
We’re going to have to change Drinking Liberally to Drinking Cynically.
Marcy has more.
I’ve actually considered giving the host position to someone else, because I’ve totally lost all faith in the system. Not enough to go running away to live off the land like some of your other readers (I like my running water thank you very much), but I really don’t think I can participate in national politics anymore. Local and state? yeah.
But I have no confidence in our politicians, democrats and republicans. no confidence.
Buck up, you can’t take this negativity into the tournament, Dude.
I gotta see that movie again…
How about reality-based drinking?
I’m a much bigger fan of drinking-based reality.
until 2009, anyway. š
We should all be gearing up right now to help Bush reap what he sowed. Either he pardons and proves that he has no interest in law and order and that he’s looking like a co-conspirator, or he doesn’t pardon, so his defending of Libby was just a lot of hot air as usual.
Either way, Bush is the head and embodiment of the Republican Party and every single GOP elected official and candidate in the United States is his enabler and lieutenant unless they openly call for impeachment. The Dems won’t do it. The rest of us have to.
That will be a good place for him. And this will force Bush’s hand regarding the pardon question – he doesn’t get to wait until 2009 and do it on the way out the door…
Yeah, it should be an impeachable offense. But without some help from Republican Senators, it isn’t going to happen. You might get a couple, and we would probably lose Lieberman….
Does anyone really think Libby is going to spend even a nanosecond in jail?
I would say it depends entirely on Karl’s calculation of the political advantage to be found.
Sure, Scooter’s been a loyal, even willing, minion, and that’s to be rewarded whenever possible. At the same time, though, the posse’s catching up again, and there seem to be more of them now.
It’s starting to look like we’ll have to throw someone to them again — and Scooter’s already compromised, so he may be the most expendable of the remaining cadre.
The question to be considered is how to prevent the other henchmen from revolting and joining up with the sheriff, because if they see Scooter going over the side, they may well figure out that the game is up. They don’t seem to trust us as much as they used to.
Besides we can always circle back around and bust him out of the pen on our way out of Dodge when it’s over…. It’s barely a year and a half; it’ll be good seasoning for the boy. He’s always been a little wimpish and we know what THAT means.
