Today is my son’s graduation day from high school. Just a short while ago it seems I was holding him in my arms as a newborn, showing him to his mother, all red and white and bundled up in hospital blankets, the proud possessor of a beautiful full head of brown hair with copper and bronze tints my wife could not believe, since she was so certain his hair would be black, like hers. That’s when we discovered that blonde hair is not necessarily a recessive trait, but one willing to mix it up with the darker hues.
Eighteen years later we come to this day, and already my wife and I are holding back tears. Our baby is grown into a man’s body, and a maturity beyond his years. I wonder what sort of world he shall inherit as he comes into his adulthood, but I do not wonder about him. He’s a far better person than I am, and if there is a God, he and his generation will make a great and beneficial impact during their lifetimes for the betterment of this planet we all share. What hope we have that humanity will progress toward more spiritual, more humane and less materialistic values, values that place the acceptance of all people before the tenets of any faith or the prejudices of the past, lies with him and his generation.
Which is good, because never in our history has a generation faced greater challenges. From global climate change that threatens human life, globalization that benefits corporations at the expense of individual freedoms, human rights abuses, an unconstitutional and expansive executive power that has corrupted our government beyond recognition, political parties in thrall to the money power, a news media that long ago lost its way and became a propaganda arm for the rich and powerful as it switched over from ferreting out the truth to passing on lies, gossip and disinformation as part of a vast infotainment empire, and religious fundamentalism (Christian, Islamic, Hindi, Judaic, etc.) meant to return us to the dark ages of repression and ignorance, no generation in modern history has ever been dealt a worse hand as they begin their long journey through all that life has to offer them, both good and evil.
I hope you will join me today in wishing my son, and all his fellow travelers, young men and women just entering the most important stage of their lives, your well wishes, prayers and the hope that where we have failed they will find a way through to a better future than the dark vision that seemingly looms on our, and especially their, horizon.
Peace.
I know exactly what you mean Steven. It’s a mystifying thing to gaze at a young man and still see the baby that came into your world only…yesterday. And having met your fine son I can understand your pride :o)
Milestones fly by so fast it’s hard to catch up sometimes. I just try the best I can to take something of every moment I have with my own son and daughters and store it away in my heart like an alblum.
Congratulations to your son, and to Mom and Dad too.
Peace
ps
I think we’re in good hands.
Congratulations!
(If I knew how I would display fireworks – the only proper use in RL I know for gunpowder and explosives)
Congratulations and best wishes to your son, Steven D.
Perfect! Thank you.
Congratulations to all of you today!
May the wind always be on his back……
congrats, Steven and Mrs. Steven! I do know how you and others feel. I am very confident that because of the foundation in his growing that you and your wife have given him, he will do just fine and will be the protector of our lives as they assume the guard. He has already shown the stars are in alignment for his future. I know he will go long and far in his pursuit of good things. I am very confident in him and all the rest to bring to us the best of the best in our future and theirs as well….just think soon you will be holding a newborn grand baby….then and only then will you have come full circle in knowing that life is great. My very best to him and his parents. hugs….
the journey’s just beginning, and he and his classmates will face a daunting task…which l believe they will handle with dignity, confidence, and sure hands.
peace, blessings and wishes for a joyful celebration to you all

And best wishes as your son and others in his position embark on the next journey in life’s travels.
Watching a child grow and stand on the threshold of adulthood on graduation day is one of those very bittersweet days we can’t escape from…no matter if we want to hold back time just a little longer and keep them the child who gave us unconditional love as only a child can…but sadly we have to let that child go and proudly deal with the young adult this child has become.
Steven, I wish you and your family a wonderful day-a day of joy and the making of beautiful memories.
Congratulations to both you & your wife, Stephen, on accomplishing the greatest task we’ll ever have as human beings – raising the next generation to be good people, caring of others and knowing right from wrong. Congratulations to your son on having finished high school and the luck of having parents like you!
Wow, CONGRATULATIONS, Steven D., Mrs. and your son! How wonderful! What a lovely, touching write up this is!
Carpe diem, young man!
Blessings on your son and his classmates and all the children spreading their wings, and on the parents and communities who raised them and have so many hopes and dreams for them. I always cry a little at graduations and as my teen has just sped through freshman year I’ll soon be in your shoes, Steven, wondering how 18 years can fly so fast. Best wishes to you.
Congratulations Steven, Mrs, and son. Our oldest is going to be a senior next year, so we’ve been thinking about graduations and colleges a lot lately.
Congratulations!
As Scribe would say: Onward! 🙂
ONward!
Yes, ONward. With sincere congratulation to you and yours, Steven, and parents who have managed to raise their young to maturity in these times, and to the young, who are inheriting all the good and all the not good we and those before us have left for them to work with.
Not long ago I watched my Grand Daughter graduate from Law school, burdened by a debt load my mind can’t even imagine. How will she ever crawl out from under that, without having to literally sell her freedom to the corporate workplace and whatever that will require of her freedom and integrity and idealism?
When I think of the challenges facing todays young, and the current horrendous condition of this country I once felt so proud of, I have to admit to being selfishly grateful my life span is not unlimited. And at the same time, I have endless faith in the powerful human spirit of our young to see what we couldn’t, to find new ways, and to fix what is broken or build something new and better.
There is only one single direction worth traveling always, and that IS ONward!
