Patrick Leahy has issued subpoenas for Karl Rove and his sidekick, J. Scott Jennings. He also had some choice words for this administration.
“The evidence shows that senior White House political operatives were focused on the political impact of federal prosecutions and whether federal prosecutors were doing enough to bring partisan voter fraud and corruption cases,” Leahy said. “It is obvious that the reasons given for the firings of these prosecutors were contrived as part of a cover-up and that the stonewalling by the White House is part and parcel of that same effort.”
…“The Bush-Cheney White House continues to place great strains on our constitutional system of checks and balances,” Leahy added. “Not since the darkest days of the Nixon administration have we seen efforts to corrupt federal law enforcement for partisan political gain and such efforts to avoid accountability.”
…“I hope that the White House takes this opportunity to reconsider its blanket claim of executive privilege, especially in light of the testimony that the President was not involved in the dismissals of these U.S. Attorneys,” Leahy said in his letter. “I am left to ask what the White House is so intent on hiding that it cannot even identify the documents, the dates, the authors and recipients that they claim are privileged.”
The AFP reports he also said this:
“There is a cloud over this White House and a gathering storm.”
It’s Watergate, Part Deux.
.
From my diary.
Watergate analogy: August 1974 = August 2006 … Congress waited a bit too long!
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
But who selects the special prosecutor? And could we ever believe that they would be interested in upholding the law after what we’ve been seeing this summer?
(Interesting that in your link, Feingold calls Gonzales’ testimony for what it is: perjury.
gimme an “I”, and a “T Z” too…
there may yet be a fitzmas…august works for me.

And when Karl Rove decides not to honor the subpoena….??
They have one week to comply. Then it is contempt of congress for them.
Two words, Senator Leahy. Inherent contempt. Learn them. Love them. Embrace them. Use them.
Inherent contempt in the senate can be filibustered. Paging Conyers…
You know what? I’d let them talk themselves blue trying to protect Rove-boy.
All this shit before Vacation for them….
Lot’s of “splainin’ to do” when they get to their home districts, one and all.
Harry’s plan to keep at least one Senator on duty during vacation to stop Bush from sneaking in appointments is a good idea. He may want to schedule some of these committees to stay in session also…
I don’t think the STAFF goes on vacation, necessarily. They do all the real work. As long as they keep all of the Judicial Committee lawyers and investigators there to prepare the reports and legal paperwork, they’re ready to proceed once they’re all back in town after Labor Day.
Bob Mueller just hung Gonzo out to dry this afternoon. I’m seeing Gonzo getting the Friday Night News Dump here…but I want him to stay, so he can keep doing damage to the Goopers.
Even better, I want to see Bush give Congress the Double Deuce again and say “You won’t get Rove and you won’t get Gonzo and Barney and I will fight you for every square inch of turf!”
Just to, you know, completely decimate the GOP for the next twenty years. Really.
Keep the pressure on, Dems. Screw it, let’s see more subpoenas and contempt charges and perjury calls. Because enough of them will have Mitch McConnell and John Boehner in there saying “You’re gone, and here’s how we’re going to replace you.”
I would enjoy this a lot more if our soldiers weren’t dying in Iraq while all this was going on.
Abu may develop a burning desire to spend more time with his family…either that, or he’ll develop a debilitating medical condition exacerbated by all the stress he’s been under and the #2 at doj, who ever the hell that is now, will take over in his absence.
the later scenario solves a lot of problems for the chimperor, eh.
tune in tomorrow for another exciting episode of oops! when Abu corrects his misstatement.

I doubt that Abu G (Fredo) is going anywhere. He needs to stay exactly where he is to continue to obstruct justice for Bush & Cheney’s lawbreaking in the NSA domestic spying scandal. He is their only buffer and he’ll fight it out to the end, just like Scooter did, knowing that his back is covered by the criminals he’s shielding through obstruction and perjury.
But for any other “Godfather” fans, we all know what happened to that Fredo in the end…
he won’t leave…he’s the final firewall, if he goes down, he jig is up….all the way to the WH.
speaking of the godfather…fredo’s revenge:

I always wondered about the actual meaning…but obviously there is a vast conspiracy involving many who agreed to protect and defend the Constitution and who are knowingly conspiring to abuse what was once a clear understanding of the Constitution. Not honoring the power of a Congressional subpoena to at least appear for questioning is unheard of. That the President can order one not to appear is beyond the scope of any powers granted to him. That the President can order the Justice Dept. not to honor the rights of Congress in regard to the subpoenas takes matters to the extreme. How could Pelosi and Reid not contemplate impeachment?
