S’posd to be 103 today.  Montana is bursting into flames in the area where I think my son’s group is hiking.  I’m out of coffee.

I hope your son is all right.  Is there any way to call and find out?

      • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on August 9, 2007 at 9:06 am

        That’s scary.

Will it make you feel any better if I tell you how wonderful the OB instructors were, and that they have satellite phones with GPS out there with them?  And we know they work, because that’s how they located CBtE’s group in the mist when they were having trouble finding landmarks and they needed to re-supply?

        I need coffee.

        • Second Nature
Second Nature on August 9, 2007 at 9:23 am

I keep rereading about how skilled the instructors are, as well as looking at webcams all over Montana….which is what is keeping me from calling the base camp.  I might not know exactly where my son is, but I’m spying on  Montana over the intertubes.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on August 9, 2007 at 9:33 am

FWIW, sometimes there’s no one there at the base camp to answer (they do go out for supplies and stuff), which would just make you worry.  I know, because the thick mist/long time to resupply thing happened on my call-in day at the half-way point.

They’ll be keeping an eye on things at the base camp and working together to stay away from the fires and be safe.

AndiF on August 9, 2007 at 9:59 am

but these are very big states and even though it sounds like the fires are huge, the relative area is small. When we were in Idaho, it had the most acreage burning of any western state and it was really easy to avoid the areas where the fires were — despite there being several hundred thousand acres burning, there were no fire within 30 miles of us. A couple of years ago in Oregon, we were staying 5 miles away from a 4000 acre fire and they didn’t evacuate us or the town that was even closer.

It’s the price you pay if you want to be “rural”.  But the trade-off comes this weekend when we get to enjoy the Perseid meteor shower.  Clear skies forecast and its a New Moon.  Hoping for a good show.

Light pollution bugs me…especially when you’re trying to see cool things like the Perseids.  I’ve been thinking of going someplace outside of Raleigh if it’s going to be clear.

MikeInOhio on August 9, 2007 at 10:03 am

I’ve been fascinated with this kind of stuff since I was a kid.  Since we moved out here ten years ago I’ve gotten a little spoiled with being able to walk out on a clear night and just stargaze.  But it’s cloudy more often than not in this part of the state so you need to have a little luck on your side.  This year it appears we are going to be smiled upon by the gods of Ohio’s finicky weather.

Family Man on August 9, 2007 at 10:29 am

Talk about heat and tomatoes.  I don’t mind.

It’s raining (which we need) and won’t get above 50 degrees for the next few days, so of course were running low on firewood.

As for fresh tomatoes, I won’t see one of those until next February.

Home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes
What’d life be without home grown tomatoes
There’s only two things that money can’t buy
That’s true love and home grown tomatoes

You can go out and eat ’em, that’s for sure
But there’s nothin’ a home grown tomato won’t cure
You can put ’em in a salad, put ’em in a stew
You can make your own, very own tomato juice
You can eat ’em with eggs, you can eat ’em with gravy
You can eat ’em with beans, pinto or navy
Put em on the side, put em on the middle
Home grown tomatoes on a hot cake griddle

Well, we had our share of heat this week, and I have no a/c at home.  Yesterday, as I left the apt (4pm), it was still 76 inside – down from 91.
At curly’s now, where no a/c is required this beautiful morning.

I’m sure FMom and I wouldn’t survive if we didn’t have A/C.  Last year in late April our A/C went out.  It was already hitting high 80’s/low 90’s.  We would have to go over to my sister’s house or just drive around to get some A/C.

It always amazes me how people got by in the early days without A/C.

Yep, one year of long hours and hard work, three of slacking and suckling at the public trough.

I took a break yesterday and went outside to check out the yellow-jacket nest I’d heard was in the lawn next to the parking area. Being a numbers geek, I was compelled to count the number of critters coming and going for 60 seconds to try to estimate the size of the underground nest. There were 76 in a minute! Gives new meaning to the old “Don’t Tread On Me” slogan.

first thing in the morning is almost as good as a cup of coffee. What a sweetie.

May you have many happy licks on the face (or any other part of your anatomy of your choosing).

I’m so used to no one being around early that I hadn’t even come back to check.

Jim’s starts school today. How long before the CBs go back?

Good morning Andi, CG, Anna and wrecker!

Another sweltering 105 down here today.  The only upside is the grass in the yard isn’t growing.

Ha…and now I finally came back.
CBtY starts the 4th, CBtE starts the 10th.  A source of consternaton for CBtY, as you can imagine.

Good morning all.  I’m off to fight with Verizon, which ended my phone service yesterday despite no prior notice.  No bills or contact since my switchover in June.  Wish me luck.
