Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) has long been rumored to be bi- or homosexual and to engage in sex acts in public restrooms. Of course, he denied it. But it has now been confirmed. He was arrested on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport for engaging in lewd acts in a restroom. The arresting officer explains:
According to the incident report, Sgt. Dave Karsnia was working as a plainclothes officer on June 11 investigating civilian complaints regarding sexual activity in the men’s public restroom in which Craig was arrested.
Airport police previously had made numerous arrests in the men’s restroom of the Northstar Crossing in the Lindbergh Terminal in connection with sexual activity.
Karsnia entered the bathroom at noon that day and about 13 minutes after taking a seat in a stall, he stated he could see “an older white male with grey hair standing outside my stall.”
The man, who lingered in front of the stall for two minutes, was later identified as Craig.
“I could see Craig look through the crack in the door from his position. Craig would look down at his hands, ‘fidget’ with his fingers, and then look through the crack into my stall again. Craig would repeat this cycle for about two minutes,” the report states.
Craig then entered the stall next to Karsnia’s and placed his roller bag against the front of the stall door.
“My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall,” Karsnia stated in his report. “From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me.”
Craig was wearing dress pants with black dress shoes.
“At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area,” the report states.
Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that “I could … see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider.”
Karsnia then held his police identification down by the floor so that Craig could see it.
“With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, ‘No!’ I again pointed towards the exit. Craig exited the stall with his roller bags without flushing the toilet. … Craig said he would not go. I told Craig that he was under arrest, he had to go, and that I didn’t want to make a scene. Craig then left the restroom.”
In a recorded interview after his arrest, Craig “either disagreed with me or ‘didn’t recall’ the events as they happened,” the report states.
Craig stated “that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine,” the report states. Craig also told the arresting officer that he reached down with his right hand to pick up a piece of paper that was on the floor.
“It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper,” the arresting officer said in the report.
That’s a whole lot of code that I knew nothing about. But Larry has certainly earned a new nickname: Wide Stance Craig.
Sen. Craig is listed as the third most conservative senator by Progressive Punch. He has voted for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
He says he takes a wide stance when he takes a crap. If his wife believes him, I’ll be shocked.
who is going to post a list of all of the fools. What a list! If there was a free press in this country- can anyone imagine what they could do?
And- it just continues to puzzle me- All Goopers?

Howie Klein has a good post up on this as well. From his post-
Oy vey. What is it with these men? Still, I sure wish the cop had played it a bit longer. A bit of money or a flash of the old peter would certainly have been more damning than a foot smooch beneath the stall.
Oh my. Are ALL Republican political figures self-loathing closet-cases or what? It seems like – what? – at least six of them in the last month or so getting caught in compromising situations.
I’m just waiting for Fox News to report on it identifying Larry Craig as (D-Idaho) in the caption.
I think you can safely change the designation of his seat from “safe” to “open” and start looking for a good Democrat in Idaho. But are there any Democrats in Idaho?
What is it about sex in public restrooms, anyways? That’s among the least romantic locations that I could possibly conceive of. I guess romance has nothing to do with it…
One of the best gay movies is called Taxi zum Klo, which means “taxi to the toilet”.
Yes, you are right, romance has little to do with casual gay male sex.
Is it only closeted gays that do this sort of thing in restrooms? If one were out in the open, I would think you could just go home or get a hotel room or something. But what do I know….
I don’t think you have to be closeted, but there are probably people here who can answer that question more authoritatively.
I believe the main thing is the thrill of being able to meet someone whom you don’t know at all and then have sex with them thirty seconds later. Getting a hotel room takes up too much time, and can get expensive if you have a lot of partners.
man, are these guys coming out in droves…almost every other week there is something about these guys’ hidden proclivities coming to the fore.
These are America’s proponents of family values?
Okay, America, get this straight (so to speak). The louder these cats inveigh against alternative life commitments, the more proof you have that these guys are in the closet and are scared shitless that they’re going to be found out, and have to truly be who they are.
However, I beg to differ about no romance among gay males. There is. However, anonymous, furtive sex for certain closeted males as well as for gays is still appealing in this age of AIDS. They don’t want to get emotionally close. There’s something about shame and repulsion, empowerment and attraction, and filth and dirt about sex in a public bathroom.
You have to wonder just what, just what they are bringing home to their wives. Lawd.
I certainly didn’t mean to imply that there is no romance among gay males. For example, from what I recall of the movie from just reading reviews at IMDB, the “hero” was involved in a long-term relationship, which I imagine had romance involved, but he still went to the public lavatories, where he was most definitely not looking for romance. I guess the general point is that men can enjoy sex without there being any romance, whether they’re gay or straight. It’s just a lot easier for gays to avoid romance, for the obvious reason that the encounter is between two men. 😉
BTW, a point I haven’t seen made here is that the “crime” here is not really harassment, but homosexuality.
Not that there’s anything wrong with being gay….but are all self-loathing homosexuals republican? It’s not even surprising anymore to find out that the same people who are fighting to prevent gays from attaining actual “personhood” status are themselves gay.
Perhaps someone should ask ole “Wide Stance Larry” exactly what has cause his stance to become so wide.
Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) has long been rumored to be bi- or homosexual
Recent research has shown that bisexual men are very rare, if they exist at all. Men are hard-wired to be turned on by either male or female bodies, but not both. (Women are different.)
Wow, a lot of comment about our “unmarried” mr Sen. Craig.
This “code” of foot tapping in the stalls is something that gay men have been arrested and entrapped for more than the 40 years I’ve known about it. Usually it is the police officer the initiates it. Don’t know about this case, sounds pretty flimsy to me.
At least the cops don’t just barge into gay bars and arrest everyone as they used to do when I was young and went to gay bars. The crime? Why being suspected of being gay. . .in a gay bar? you must be gay. Yes it was illegal to be homosexual when I was young and stupid.
