Here’s what will definitely happen when Gen. David Petraeus testifies before Congress next week: he’ll assert that the surge has reduced violence in Iraq — as long as you don’t count Sunnis killed by Sunnis, Shiites killed by Shiites, Iraqis killed by car bombs and people shot in the front of the head.
Here’s what I’m afraid will happen: Democrats will look at Gen. Petraeus’s uniform and medals and fall into their usual cringe. They won’t ask hard questions out of fear that someone might accuse them of attacking the military. After the testimony, they’ll desperately try to get Republicans to agree to a resolution that politely asks President Bush to maybe, possibly, withdraw some troops, if he feels like it.
Thanks for that link CG. I’ve been following this story in all it’s sickening details and continue to be sad at how much racism is still so prevalent. I wish it was getting much more airtime to make people realize this isn’t some aberration of one small town but as the writer states in that link that racism is a parasite on this country. We as a country can’t deal with outright racism or the more pernicious institutionalized racism if the general public refuses to acknowledge that it continues to exist or believe it is mainly isolated incidents like the Jena-6.
Depression can do more physical damage to a person’s health than several long-term diseases, according to a study.
Saba Moussavi of the World Health Organisation led the largest population-based study on the physical effects of several illnesses by analysing data from more than 245,000 people in 60 countries. His results, published today in the Lancet, showed that depression had more impact on sufferers than angina, arthritis, asthma, and diabetes.
“On the basis of our results, addressing the further exacerbation of disability due to depression needs to be a priority of health systems worldwide,” wrote Dr Moussavi. “Primary care providers must be taught not to ignore the presence of depression when patients present with a chronic physical condition.”
I mentioned this on the Open Thread last night, but don’t know how many people read that (I confess I usually don’t…) — Riverbend and her family made it safely out of Iraq and are safe in Syria. It’s the first post she’s made since late April. The long silence was worrying me, so I thought other folks might like to know. (this was posted by someone on DKos last night….)
OBL ‘pops up’ to give chimpy a raison d’etre to continue the struggle…yet another video:
US studying Bin Laden ‘9/11 anniversary’ tape
The US government has obtained a copy of a videotape purporting to be a message from Osama bin Laden and is studying it to see whether it is old or new, according to a report today.
The tape, news of which was first reported by an Islamist website last night, was being analysed today, unnamed US intelligence officials told the Reuters news agency.
The initial announcement, which said the al-Qaida leader would release a video addressing the American people on the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, appeared on a website where al-Qaida’s media arm, as-Sahab, frequently posts messages.
The news was illustrated with a still photo from the video, showing Bin Laden addressing the camera, his beard apparently dyed black.
A banner for the forthcoming address read: “Soon, God willing, a videotape from the lion sheikh Osama bin Laden, God preserve him.”
Why am l not surprised. Makes one wonder about the circumstances surrounding the great escape from Tora Bora, eh. He sure seems to regularly show up at the most opportune times for BushCo™.
Also, for those keeping score, here’s the list of missives, at least the 17 that have been that have been acknowledged, from OBL.
I thought that was awfully convenient, and with the dye job to boot? How stupid do they think we are? For all we know, it’s old video they pulled out of the vault.
yeah….the dark beard is a bit strange. l don’t think vanity is one of his weaknesses. The marvels of modern digital technology make many things appear to be what they are, in reality, not…lots of ?’s….no answers.
With the poss exception to yours, re: stupid…he’s [chimpy] still in office. As H.L.Mencken said: Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.
or should I say Betray-us? available for free over at Susie’s place
Spot-on, he is.
Most people ‘want Iraq pull-out’
I wish our Congress would get the memo…
and think you all should too.
Excellent piece.

Depression more harmful than angina, says study

The U.S. medical establishment appears to have turned a blind eye to the abuse of military medicine at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, doctors from around the world said in a letter published Friday in a prestigious British medical journal

It even made the local Boston Illuminati channel 7, that’s mainstream corporate propaganda all the time.
That is so funny. 🙂
