   How about a little surge in truthiness that would go along way?

   The surge for truth: America expects, but will General Petraeus deliver?

   “If the White House had any influence with this warrior, it would like him to report that the eight-month-old troop “surge” is working, despite the unfortunate picture presented by bloody suicide bombings, US losses, sectarian murders, rampant corruption and political chaos. The general would be sure to demand more time for the strategy to work – but, conveniently for the US election timetable, would say that some troops could start coming home early in 2008.

   Curiously enough, that is exactly what the much-lauded Gen Petraeus, flanked by the US ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, is expected to tell Congress tomorrow. For if recent history is any guide, he will paint a portrait that might as well have been provided by the White House spin machine.”

   and alternatively, we could spend a little more $$ – buy our way out of Iraq – Money talks: ‘the U S has been bribing insurgents to fight Al-Qaeda.’

   Petraeus will tell Congress that there has been great progress at a local level in Iraq following a surge in the number of troops this year, but little sign of political reconciliation.

   In a letter to US troops, the general wrote that “local Iraqi leaders are coming forward, opposing extremists and establishing provisional units of neighbourhood security volunteers”.

   The Sunday Times has witnessed at first hand the enormous sums of cash changing hands. One sheikh in a town south of Baghdad was given $38,000 (£19,000) and promised a further $189,000 over three months to drive Al-Qaeda fighters from a nearby camp.

   Petraeus is to ask Congress tomorrow for more time to build political reconciliation.

   Whatever it takes, follow the Brits OUT. It’s a failure

   Even with a vowel on the end of his name.
   “Serious” people take what other “serious people” say ‘seriously.’
   That means taking even the most outlandish, mendacious, evasive speech at ‘face value,’ and according it the ‘seriousness’ it deserves as the speech of a “Serious” person.

   Panetta’s whistling past the graveyard.

   Like so many others of the Serious Political Class, he simply refuses to see what’s right in front of his nose, namely that it’s Cheney and not Bush who’s really calling the shots and that Cheney is a right-wing loonietune.

   I suppose it’s tough for The Serious Ones to acknowledge such harsh realities.  After all, it would mean admitting that they’ve had their serious heads securely tucked up their serious asses for the last six and a half years…

   Ummm, on the last paragraph and Leon Panetta:

   Yes, Panetta believes Bush is delusional, and spouting crap.  the part about bush having to feel it was his idea is the giveaway.

   Does this help?
