An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don’t.

kills women, and Nicaragua is providing the proof: Reuters
An outright ban on abortion in Nicaragua has caused the deaths of at least 80 women since it was imposed 11 months ago, Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.
The U.S.-based rights group said women with risky pregnancies whose lives might be saved by aborting the fetus were dying because of the ban on terminations in any circumstance.
“They died because of the intimidation effect of penalizing abortion,” said Human Rights Watch investigator Angela Heimburger, presenting the data in Managua…
…Aside from the blow to women who become pregnant after rape or incest, the law is viewed as risking the lives of the some 400 women who suffer dangerous ectopic pregnancies in Nicaragua each year.
The number of young children on prescription drugs for heartburn and other digestive problems jumped about 56 percent in recent years and researchers say obesity and overuse might be contributing to the surprising increase.
The surge was found in a Medco Health Solutions Inc. analysis released Thursday of U.S. prescription data for 2002-2006. It suggests that more than 2 million U.S. children 18 and under used drugs for digestive or gastrointestinal complaints last year.
“It’s a signal that something’s going on that we need to keep an eye on,” said Dr. Robert Epstein, Medco’s chief medical officer. “Whether it’s parents getting their children diagnosed more frequently, or obesity,” or other factors, “it bears further study,” he said.
A team of leading US Democrats is planning to send a delegation to a key UN climate conference to rival President Bush’s official team.
They are so frustrated by Mr Bush’s refusal to support US emissions cuts that they will travel to Bali to set out their alternative vision.
The UN summit in December is seen as a vital step towards a new global climate deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol.
The delegation may be led by House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The Democrat visit is welcome news to EU politicians, who have pledged to cut Europe’s emissions by an ambitious 30% by 2020 from 1990 levels if other big nations make similar effort.
Big developing nations like China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico are refusing to make any international commitments while the US refuses to move.
Climate negotiators from Europe and Africa have told BBC News that a Democrat presence in Bali would be very welcome. They said it could apply pressure on President Bush’s representatives in the negotiating hall.
The House was expected to pass legislation on Thursday that would extend the criminal jurisdiction of U.S. courts to any federal contractor working alongside military operations.

seems BushCo™”s having a fit of pique over browns’ decision to pull even more troops out of basra: ‘In response to the withdrawal announcement, the White House has decided to slander Britain. The Daily Telegraph reports today that a senior White House official has revoked Britain’s status of being “the closest Bush ally”:“
“There’s concern about Brown,” a senior White House foreign policy official told The Daily Telegraph. “But this is compensated by the fact that Paris and Berlin are much less of a headache. The need to hinge everything on London as the guarantor of European security has gone.”
The White House official added that Britain would always be “the cornerstone” of US policy towards Europe but there was “a lot of unhappiness” about how British forces had performed in Basra and an acceptance that Mr Brown would pull the remaining 4,500 troops out of Iraq next year.
“Operationally, British forces have performed poorly in Basra,” said the official. “Maybe it’s best that they leave. Now we will have a clear field in southern Iraq.”
[…]
The White House has also praised the work of British troops. “[T]hey had made progress in southern Iraq,” said Vice President Cheney in February.

OT, but I’m hoping you’ll do a “friday news dump” in lieu of the regular news bucket tomorrow (I don’t think I’ll have time to post one tomorrow morning). Do you mind?
After reading the full investigative piece in the NYT today on how this administration decided on breaking America’s historic ban on torture and then pursued a long, corrupting policy of ensuring that the interpretation of the law was politicized to keep torture alive, it is hard to disagree with Marty Lederman:
Never in history had the United States authorized such tactics.
There is no doubt – no doubt at all – that these tactics are torture and subject to prosecution as war crimes. We know this because the law is very clear when you don’t have war criminals like AEI’s John Yoo rewriting it to give one man unchecked power. We know this because the very same techniques – hypothermia, long-time standing, beating – and even the very same term “enhanced interrogation techniques” – “verschaerfte Vernehmung” in the original German – were once prosecuted by American forces as war crimes. The perpetrators were the Gestapo. The penalty was death. You can verify the history here.
anyone want to take bets on how long this big talk lasts?
The Democratic chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee said today that he was ready to go to the mat with President Bush over further funding for the war in Iraq.
Rep. David Obey (D-WI), who spoke today with Reps. John Murtha (D-PA) and Jim McGovern (D-MA), says he has “absolutely no intention of reporting out of Committee anytime in this session of Congress any such request that simply serves to continue the status quo.” He laid our three conditions for the White House to meet:
Establish as a goal the end of U.S. involvement in combat operations by January of 2009.
Ensure that troops would have adequate time at home between deployments as outlined in the Murtha and Webb amendments.
Demonstrate a determination to engage in an intensive, broad scale diplomatic offensive involving other countries in the region.
“The latest remarkable twist comes a day after The Herald revealed a top-secret document vital to the truth about Lockerbie was obtained by the Crown but never disclosed to the defence.”
An offer of remuneration by the US agency could be explained by the political imperative then for the US and Britain to secure a conviction for Lockerbie. At the time, Libya was very much a hostile nation, unlike the more relaxed links between Tripoli and the West which now prevail.
Yesterday in Edinburgh, the defence lodged its case with the appeal court and a preliminary hearing has been set for a week tomorrow.
A source close to the case said: “We understand the commission found new documents which refer to discussions between the US intelligence agency and the Gaucis and that the sum involved was as much as $2m.”
