    Here’s a brand new cafe!

    Old cafe here.

How is everyone this morning?  I’m so glad it’s Friday…

Are you still in Mass, Andi?

    • AndiF
AndiF on October 26, 2007 at 6:37 am

I see you saw I said I was back home in the last cafe (hmm, ‘I see you saw I said’ sounds like a tongue twister).

      Got a good weekend planned?

      • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on October 26, 2007 at 6:42 am

Not really.  CtE is on restriction until his grades come up, and we’ll be spending some time tonight putting the expectations down on paper in contract form (ugh).  I’d like to go for a bike ride along the Lehigh River if the weather’s decent, but nothing big in the works.  How about you?  Just relaxing at home before next week?

        • AndiF
AndiF on October 26, 2007 at 6:51 am

Poor CBtE and poor you. I’ll probably spend some chunk of the weekend working because I’m running a bit behind for next week’s delivery.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on October 26, 2007 at 7:54 am

Yeah, I have some work stuff to finish up before the end of the month too.

CBtE and I will live…and hopefully he will realize that he needs to study as well as do his homework on time if e wants to go to the mall on Friday night.  I don’t remember school being such a big deal when I was a kid.

No plans?  Sounds like a relaxing weekend ahead.

… Call your Senator … emails are too late now, let alone letters.

Say you are in favor of Senator Lautenberg’s Amtrak Bill … or if he’s a Replicant, you are in favor of the Senator Lott’s Amtrak Bill … and you don’t want him voting for any amendments trying to kill Amtrack.

(A little) more info at my diary over at Big Orange, but call your Senator first.

Good morning Andi and ask! Our last two big rains added 3″ of much needed moisture to our garden. This is the last chance to move the house plants inside, as it looks like we may get a frost Sunday night.

Yeah, the rain has been wonderful. And I’m looking forward to the frost — I think fall is finally here (even if the colors aren’t much this year).

        • Indianadem
Indianadem on October 27, 2007 at 7:50 am

We drove over to Morgan-Monroe Forest last night to pick up a load of cider for the volunteer fire dept. fish fry and saw some beautiful trees along the way. For some reason, the colors seem brighter along the ridgetops. I’m curious about that and will check the soil types on the county’s GIS map sometime to see if there’s a pattern there.

Also, there’s a pair of hard maples next to the newspaper office in town that have been favorites of mine since childhood. I’m constantly petrified some developer will come along and decide they’re in the way.

          • AndiF
AndiF on October 27, 2007 at 8:10 am

We have a few good spots of color — mostly where the woods are more open so I think that has more to do with the ridgetop being more colorful than the soil would.

          • Indianadem
Indianadem on October 27, 2007 at 8:15 am

I’m doing fine, just a little hectic with things around here.

We’ve been having some very nice weather here.  70’s/40’s and clear days.  I thought yesterday with the cold coming no more grass mowing.  Then I looked at all the oak trees and thought about getting all the leafs up.  I want two feet of snow down here.  I don’t want to be able to see the yard.

        • Second Nature
Second Nature on October 29, 2007 at 8:52 am

The problem with leaving the windows open when it gets down to 40 degrees and throwing the down comforter back on the bed, is that it’s really really difficult to get out of bed in the morning.  We’ve got the same 70/40 thing going on this week. The days are just perfect and after the tons of rain we (finally) got this week, the grass is growing like April.

Hi FM.  I’m feeling ambivalent about the time change – glad that CBtY won’t be going out to wait for the bus in the dark, but sad that daylight will be gone so early in the afternoon.

Shit, that was fun. A bit difficult to chose among some of those alternatives.
      Anyway – here’s my score:

      Your Liberal Breed: Peace Patroller

You are a Peace Patroller, also known as an anti-war liberal or neo-hippie. You believe in putting an end to American imperial conquest, stopping wars that have already been lost, and supporting our troops by bringing them home.

You are an Eco-Avenger, also known as an environmentalist or tree hugger. You believe in saving the planet from the clutches of air-fouling, oil-drilling, earth-raping conservative fossil fools.

You are a Social Justice Crusader, also known as a rights activist. You believe in equality, fairness, and preventing neo-Confederate conservative troglodytes from rolling back fifty years of civil rights gains.

You are a Working Class Warrior, also known as a blue-collar Democrat. You believe that the little guy is getting screwed by conservative greed-mongers and corporate criminals, and you’re not going to take it anymore.

You are a Reality-Based Intellectualist, also known as the liberal elite. You are a proud member of what’s known as the reality-based community, where science, reason, and non-Jesus-based thought reign supreme.

You are a New Left Hipster, also known as a MoveOn.org liberal, a Netroots activist, or a Daily Show fanatic. You believe that if we really want to defend American values, conservatives must be exposed, mocked, and assailed for every fanatical, puritanical, warmongering, Constitution-shredding ideal for which they stand.

See the Guide to Liberal Breeds to find out how you compare.

      Kind of fits, I guess.

I’m not sure what I’m doing, since everyone is going trick or treating in a friend’s neighborhood (better lighting and less walking).

Probably put the bowl out front with a little sign again.

Family Man on October 31, 2007 at 6:42 am

Using the trust system?  I’m afraid if I put a bowl with a sign out front, the candy, bowl and sign would be gone by morning.

With everyone gone and a bowl out front, you might be able to relax this evening.

Might be fun to do that with a “nanny camera” and see what people do.  ðŸ™‚

Most kids in this neighborhood trick or treat with parents (the houses are far apart and there’s no streetlights), so I imagine that helps people be honest.  The older kids go to friends neighborhoods, where they can go by themselves (and go to more houses in less time, which I don’t really like; it’s a greed thing).

          • Family Man
Family Man on October 31, 2007 at 7:20 am

We’re one of the neighborhoods in town that everybody hits.  The houses are fairly close and I’d estimate we have from 100-150 kids and family come through.  The last time we did the candy thing, what got me is the number of adults that showed up at the door.

      Good morning, FM and CG!
Slept straight through until 6.30 – now I feel totally knocked out (?).
Great day for the kids, sunny and mild.

        Morning ask.

I’ve never understood why when you get more sleep you feel so tired afterwards.  Of course someone with my skillfulness for sleeping doesn’t have that problem to often. 🙂

Good thing it’s sunny and mild.  Nothing worse than trick or treating in the rain.

Well not quite central but close enough. I just thought of it as another inspiration to make me want to fly away home. (How’s that for a segue?)

I was wondering if you got a little shaken.  That’s a lovely picture.  Obviously not from CA. 🙂

It was like being on a platform standing next to a train. Everybody must e pretty blase by now because no one even stepped out of their rooms. Oddly enough, this wasn’t the biggest earthquake I’ve experienced — oddly enough that was in Evansville, Indiana.

I said over at Olivia’s place that I think you’re becoming an earthquake magnet.  I wonder if the one in Evansville was from the New Madrid fault in Missouri?

Yep, Evansville is on the New Madrid fault. I don’t know about being a magnet — that’s four in a a 30 year time period.

Well maybe not a magnet. 🙂

I’ve always found it odd that most people don’t know the strongest earthquake to hit the U.S. was in the center of the country instead of on the west coast.  I’m just waiting for the next big one to hit.

Yeah, when it happens it’s going to be a huge disaster because none of the cities along the fault are at all prepared and the buildings are not earthquake-ready.

My favorite trivia from the 1811 earthquake is that it made the church bells in Boston ring.

I was just thinking about the bells too.  I saw something on the History channel about if/when it happens again.  Memphis and St. Louis will be in shambles.  What got me after reading about it were that very strong aftershocks were felt for months afterwards.

So do you get to go home today?

George is ready to go out and FMom is up.  Got to get the day started.

Hope everyone has a good day.  Be safe out there Andi.

We got through Halloween last night, but I haven’t been outside to see if we were left any tricks.  I’ll throw George out the door, and if I don’t hear any screams from him, then I’ll know it’s safe. 🙂

Otherwise it will probably be a lot of cleaning up on the yard today.

I still think we need a national slack day.  No prep, no getting dressed up, no moving from the couch.  The physical part would be flipping channels on the remote.  Since there’s no winners, you could nap, flip the remote and yell for someone to bring you food all day.  Of couse I’d have to figure out points for grading the apex of slackatude.

Did everyone have a good Halloween last night?
