I’m hearing rumors that Trent Lott is quitting because he has a Larry Craig-like problem. Actually, I’m hearing rumors from disparate sources and I am not sure what to believe.

Meanwhile, Lott has another problem. If he retires before the end of the year he can get a sweet lobbying job about the same time we’re swearing in President Clinton. But, if he retires this year, Mississippi law will require a special election in the spring. Republicans don’t want that…they want to hold the election on the same day as the presidential election in November. If Lott waits until next year to resign, then Barbour can appoint someone to serve all next year…gaining seniority and the benefits of incumbency.

If Lott retires before Dick Clark drops the Times Square ball…he’ll be helping himself but screwing the GOP. And if he is resigning because his former Gannon/Guckert lover for hire is chirping in Larry Flynt’s ear? I’m guessing the lobbying job might be more important that whatever his former colleagues think of him.

Does anyone remember the Singing Senators?

I think people are beginning to sense that Hillary is just another New England snob school debutante interested in furthering her career, or what’s left of it. Alternatively, if she is going Republican, perhaps people are asking: why not elect a real Republican in lieu of a bad imitation. Whatever the case, her pushing a corporate domestic policy and Neocon foreign policy would scare away a lot of Democrats interested in liberal Democratic principles.

Who knew Jack London was so prescient (it was new to me anyway)?

I happened to come across this brief review of “The Iron Heel” this morning:

In the Foreword of the 1980 edition, Rutgers professor H. Bruce Franklin, itemizes some of London’s specific descriptions of the world that was to come.

Franklin: London foresees: the creation of attractive suburbs for the relatively privileged strata of the working class while the central cities are turned into what he calls “ghettoes”for the masses of unemployed and menial laborers, shoved into the darkest depths of human misery; the deliberate economic subversion of public education in order to spread illiteracy and ignorance; adequate food, health care, and housing priced above the reach of more and more people; the ubiquitous secret police infiltrating all organizations opposing the government; the establishment of a permanent mercenary army; the government conspiring in real and phony bomb plots, in the suppression of books and the destruction of printing presses, in witch hunts aimed at dissident labor leaders, professors, and authors, in destroying the reputations of some of its opponents, imprisoning many others and murdering the few it finds too formidable; spontaneous mass rebellions of the downtrodden people of the central cities; urban guerrillas battling the government’s army of mercenaries and police in the canyons of the cities.

According to London’s vision, what we call fascism is the form that the capitalist state assumes when the ruling oligarchy feels that its economic and political power is seriously threatened by working class revolution.

Even worse many of these Satanically oriented political hacks graduate and take up posts in more globally oriented organizations like the world bank, CFR or WTO. Why waste time dedicating energy and resources towards a declining empire, shift your talents towards the future.

how stupid has the immigration debate gone..Missouri’s Republican Gov. Matt Blunt proposes a new law to prevent undocumented person from obtaining a drivers license. But admits the current law prevents undocumented persons from obtaining a drivers license.

There must be some kind of procedure for “officially” resigning from the Senate–or not. What if Lott went to California and resigned at 11:59 PST? It would be 1:59 CST in Mississippi. December 31 in CA, January 1 in MS. Is there something in the law that requires resignation in Eastern Standard Time?
