That is a wonderful picture Andi took.  I can’t ever recall seeing one of those where ever I’ve been, and of course I never see them down here.

I’ve done approximately zero Christmas shopping.  I don’t know what to get everyone!  It used to be so easy when we didn’t have two nickels to rub together…the kids needed everything!  Now…not so much.  How about you?

          • AndiF
AndiF on December 4, 2007 at 8:18 am

They’re fantastic. I think they are just about the best “bought” cookies you can get and I love most cookies (and muffins and scones) because they aren’t, in fact, very sweet at all (also banana cake and carrot cake sans icing).

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on December 4, 2007 at 8:33 am

Someone brought some of those to our barbecue this summer…they were amazing.

I was thinking I’d send my clients these  chocolates this year…but maybe the cookies are a better idea.

Cataloging them? But I don’t know the dewey decimal number. 😉

Second Nature on December 4, 2007 at 8:10 am

I’m sure we have them around here somewhere, because we have hard freezes and the ground still isn’t frozen, both conditions Wiki says produce frost flowers.  Wish I wasn’t too lazy to go looking for them.  I’ll just enjoy yours instead.

AndiF on December 4, 2007 at 8:27 am

Well, I don’t have to be that energetic to get them since I get a lot of shots within 200 years of the house and the rest within 1/3 mile.

But I’d better go be energetic about work.

Nobody does Dewey any more (did you know that Dewey was so obsessed with streamlining that he took to writing his own name “Dwy”?  He felt that the vowels were irrelevant to its pronunciation).

Everything is LC (Library of Congress classification) these days.   Of course, the LC classification of photos is a very specialized endeavor – requiring uber-nerd powers.

          • AndiF
AndiF on December 4, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Hah! Around here almost all the public libraries are still dewey decimal. University libraries though are all LC.

So do you have pictures of Luna’s ecstatic return home? And how soon will we get to see pics from vacation?

          • keres
keres on December 4, 2007 at 9:25 pm

No pics of Luna’s return to Casa de Sook (she sort of lost the plot when we picked her up, and has only started to get her bearings again).  She’s in desperate need of a good spring cleaning.  I’m going to take the dog rake to her later today (she’s extra clumpy with lots of remainders of her winter coat still hanging on), and I’ll take her to the Dog Wash either tomorrow or Friday.

We picked up Albert from his “grandma’s” house later in the day.  He displayed his usual aplomb.  The funny thing was that Luna’s only “luggage” was a rope toy. Albert came home with a litter box, a carry box, a sand box, a blanket, two bowls and a tin of pellets – or pretty much enough stuff to fill the whole hatch and back seat of the car.

As for photos, I’ll post some in tomorrow’s dog blog.  I’m still in the culling phase – where about four-fifths are getting the ax.  I’m also assembling my “Blurry Bird Butts” portfolio – since lighting was so often a problem (dark forests and overcast skies) that the shutter speeds were slow, and the most of the birds turned away from me the minute they saw the camera, or just hid even further in the bushes, or flew off, etc.  On the plus side, we saw lots of rare birds (Saddleback [once down to 36 individuals and now back up to almost 700], NZ Yellowhead, Stewart Island Robin, Wandering Albatross, Little Blue Penguin).  We went whale watching as well (I got two good tail shots).

But it’s good to be home to our critters. Two Yellow-tail Black Cockatoos are in the pine right now, and I found some naked “eraser” babies in the Welcome Swallow nest earlier by holding a mirror above it.

I got a thorough snorting by Pacha yesterday morning.  She ran her muzzle down my chin and neck and even around my back – just to be sure.  They are still a bit startlingly naked, but looking a bit better than when we left.  This morning I’ve been cutting the foot-high grass between the garden beds with a hand sickle and feeding it to them. Unfortunately, the only rain we’ve had in the last  five weeks was on Monday (just before we got home) – so much of the grass had gone to seed and/or stopped growing.

Then there’s laundry and restocking the fridge, etc.

        Morning Ask.

We’re down to 34 but it’ll warm up to 60s this afternoon.  That’s one of the things I don’t like about winters down here.  The big jumps back and forth in the temps.

  6. CabinGirl
CabinGirl on December 5, 2007 at 7:45 am

Clear and cold here this morning; at least the wind has died down.

CBtY is home again today with a cold/sinus/tummyache thing. Today is also the end of the marking period, and he’s up for honor roll this time, so he needs to get his work in.  Arrgh.  It’s always something, isn’t it?

And I’m suffering from post-yoga stiffness.  I really hope it doesn’t take too long to get back in shape…

Oh, and I agree: the pack did a great job, but they’re just no match for the snugglebunny cuteness of Albert.  He’s in a league of his own on that one.

    • Family Man
Family Man on December 5, 2007 at 7:56 am

      Morning CG.

I hope CBtY gets to feeling better.

One easy way to fix the post-yoga stiffness.  Don’t do yoga and slack. 🙂

      • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on December 5, 2007 at 8:20 am

But I tried slacking, and all I got was out of shape…I keep wondering, where did my upper body strength go?

I’m sure that by the time 6 weeks have gone by, I’ll be much less bothered by it.  This week is better than last week, at least.

What are you up to today?

        • Family Man
Family Man on December 5, 2007 at 8:28 am

When you dedicate yourself to slacking you have lower expectations of body strength.  The goal is to turn into a blob on the couch.  I think I’ve hit my goal. 🙂

At the moment if off to take a nap.  Woke up at 1:00 am and it past a nap time.  See how goal oriented I am.

          See ya.

        • Second Nature
Second Nature on December 5, 2007 at 8:37 am

I slacked off by not doing strength training for six months and now I’m amazed at the same thing.  My upper body strength stinks in comparison to what it used to be.  I’ll blame in on this damn rotator cuff that won’t heal, though, as it severely limits my range of motion.  My lower body strength is still humorously abundant even with the 6 month layoff.  I leg pressed 240 yesterday with no problem.

          • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on December 5, 2007 at 8:52 am

I’m impressed.  It’s funny, I notice that a lot of my flexibility is gone too, but I can still hold the soles of my feet in a forward bend pretty easily, and the legs stuff isn’t so bad.  I guess we all use our legs more than our arms and shoulders?

I know we’re all supposed to do it to maintain muscle mass, but I tried strength training, and it just isn’t for me. I can’t seem to talk myself into getting up and going to the gym to do it, so I’ve given up and gone back to yoga.

          • Second Nature
Second Nature on December 5, 2007 at 9:14 am

I use strength training as a reward for making it through the cardio, which I hate.  I get so bored on the treadmill or the bike or the elliptical.  I’ve gone to a couple of yoga classes and I really liked it.  I need to figure out a schedule at the gym where I can do strength training and cardio on some days and yoga on tues and thurs.  But it’s a big ordeal to get me there 3 days a week as it is.

            Hope CBtY feels better. 🙂

My sister has a mini pinscher (sp?) and they have to shovel her a little path into the backyard when it snows more than 6 inches…which is very often.  I’m so mean I think I’d just drop her in deep snow and have the camera ready.  Good morning, FM and everyone.

I think it would be a blast to have snow taller than George.  I would have to teach him how to dig a path out for himself though.  I can’t see me shoveling anything. 🙂

Oh-oh, maybe she’s starting to mimic the original — one of the signs of his doddering old age is that he shits and pees in his sleep (which means that he has to spend a whole lot more time outside than he would like).

          • Second Nature
Second Nature on December 6, 2007 at 7:49 am

Nope…she still doesn’t really care where she pees.  If we’re outside she’ll go, if we’re not, she’ll still go.  It’s not as bad as it used to be…but when she just gets up from a long nap and stretches, I think her muscle memory is telling her that’s the same position for peeing so you might as well go ahead if it feels good.

That’s one reason I’ve always thought that people who have dogs would be smart to have wood floors with the large throw rugs around.  I don’t know why, but Henry or George when he was small would not go on wood or tile floors.

Actually I don’t know how George learned to be that good about not going inside.  I know when his brother Henry was alive, he would sometimes come up to the couch to see if I was asleep then head to some corner when he had to go.  Luckily I caught him most of the times, but he was really sneaky.

Today was the first official nose-hair freezing morning of the season. It was 7degrees and I didn’t have anywhere near enough clothes on to go feed my horses. I did have a good scare, though. I thought I saw cat prints in the snow from last night which would mean another stray for my extensive collection. ( I’m up to 12 cats)
I’m happy to report that it was a false alarm… it was just a big squirrel.
Good morning Andi, CG, Olivia, SN, Keres, and anyone else hanging out.

… I keep hearing ppl say that they’re hoping it’s going to melt before the ‘real’ winter starts … we often get a snowfall early that melts away and the real weather starts just after Christmas/New Year. Don’t think that’s going to happen this year – we’re stuck w/ it.

Well, I suppose getting up so early isn’t a bad thing if you’re awake (and not dragging yourself out of bed). Maybe … 🙂

Hi Andi, Mornin’ Olivia, What’s Shakin’ FM? The most amazing thing is that by the time I get signed on, half of your day is over. What early birds! Well, the early birds can have the worms… they’re all frozen anyway.
My nosehairs didn’t freeze this morning, but my trip to the barn wasn’t all that enjoyable.
It’s funny, but my Bella (my horse) is not a morning person. As soon as my head is turned, she makes the most horrible faces behind my back. It is downright hysterical. If I turn fast and catch her at it, she puts her head down an looks very contrite. She makes me laugh out loud almost every morning.
Later… everyone curtsie to the FSM, and have a great day.

Well Hi there, CG! Nah… all those early birds are just suffering from premature postilation. That’s when you post before you’re fully awake… or maybe before the rest of us are fully awake. Whatever, all I know is it’s an affliction.
The FSM may or may not be amused, but it’s Friday. How are you doing this morning?

        • CabinGirl
CabinGirl on December 7, 2007 at 10:42 am

I’m good.  I had a headache earlier, so I slept in and it’s much better now.  Now I need to do some laundry, tidy up the house and get some work-type writing done.  CBtE is having one of his friends from the new school over for the first time, so I’m wondering what to make for dinner…and I’m also trying to figure out what I need for people for Christmas.  TMI?  🙂

How are you?  Do you still have all your snow?  We do.

          • Nag
Nag on December 7, 2007 at 11:12 am

Glad your headache subsided. It’s bad when you start your day with a real pounder. Don’t you have some goodie you can make for dinner way in the back of the freezer? That’s always a good place to start. Or maybe soup and sandwiches? No, that’s what I want, never mind. 😉
Yeah, we still have snow, but not too much. Maybe a few inches. It’s been incredibly cold. I suppose it’s the flip side of global warming… the wild fluctuations in weather. Yuk.
I’m doing OK, but have been dealing with chronic pain since the summer. It really sucks. It’s hard to keep a good attitude, even though I’m a natural optimist. As for Christmas presents, sometimes it’s easier for me to browse a bit on the net and get ideas. Anything’s easier than going to the mall. Good luck with that.
Anyway, you have a great day, CG.
