If you are a regular reader you already know that the Republican National Congressional Committee (RNCC) is worse than broke…it’s in debt. And, despite being a candidate for the bankruptcy bill’s harsh prescriptions, the RNCC has dumped nearly $400,000 into the OH-05 special election. Ohio’s fifth district is supposed to be rock-ribbed Republican territory. Bush carried it in 2004 with 61% of the vote, and the recently deceased Paul Gillmor won re-election in 2006 by a comfortable 57%-43% margin.
But things are not all roses for the Republicans in the fifth district. Gov. Ted Strickland and Sen. Sherrod Brown both carried the district in 2006, even as Gillmor was coasting.
It’s hard to say whether or not the Democrat in the race, Robin Weirauch, has a chance to win. It would certainly upset common wisdom and expectations if she pulled out a victory. But, as far as I’m concerned, we’ve already won by forcing the Republicans to spend nearly $400,000 on a seat that should be safe.
The election is December 11th and if you want to get involved virtual phone banking help is needed.
And tomorrow is the last day that contribution can be put into Get Out The Vote efforts or advertising. So if you want to give to Weirauch’s campaign, do it now.
Let’s not settle for a symbolic victory of simply making the GOP spend money they can ill afford. The DCCC is helping Weirauch with an ad buy. She has the support of the AFL-CIO and the SEIU. The House Democratic leadership is making a significant contribution to her campaign. Ted Strickland, Sherrod Brown, and Tim Ryan are campaigning for her in the state. Wes Clark is raising money for her.
This would be a MAJOR upset and help lay the groundwork in Ohio for 2008.
Head over to Weiruach’s web site and dump something in her bucket, if you can. We Ohioans would appreciate it.

Ironic… didn’t the Reaganites used to brag they made the USSR spend itself into oblivion? History turns back on itself.
Make the Republicans bleed money.
Are we reduced to claiming victory while we are eating crumbs? If we lose the election, how the hell can that be a win? Stop it. And while I am at it, the goopers can bleed all the money in the world and they will come up with what ever funding they will need in order to compete. Don’t buy that line of bullshit!
In order to win, you need to win! Moral victories have no meaning this time around Boo. They don’t mean a thing!
